i'm kinda new to the game...what are these events for? just for fun or is there rewards? i would hate to miss a fun event because i didn't understand what was going on

Typically there are some rewards for the events yes.

Sometimes there are items obtainable at events, but not always and you are not certain to get anything.

I personally go for the fun and storyline, there are always great people to have a good with, and if I happen to get something unique....that's just icing on the cake.
