EM Events, Chesapeake's Notification System and Royal Guard Office
By:Terence Duff
1.
What are EM events?
EM events (Event Moderated events) are official EA/OSI events that are tied in with ongoing UO fiction and sometimes, shard fiction. EM events often occur randomly and without warning. It's not uncommon to be sitting at the bank and see the town crier start shouting that an event is happening.
How can I tell when an Event is going to take place? (notification system)
Although Events are quite random, Chesapeake has an Event Notification System located at the Royal Guard Office in Britain (see below). Green Gems mean no Event today or within the next while, Red Gems indicate an Event is about to take place and No Gems on the spot means that an Event is in progress somewhere on the shard.
Who is Chesapeake's Commander of the Royal Britannian Guard?
Chesapeake's Commander of the Royal Britannian Guard is Keira Vaelen (also known as EM Nina) who was recently appointed (late Summer, 2005) to take over for Myrina Heron who departed during the Spring of 2005.
Click the image to open in full size.
Where is Chesapeake's Royal Guard Office?
Chesapeake's Royal Guard Office is located in East Britain, just south of the East Britain Bank. It can also be found by sextant at 3o 15'S 21o 47'E.
How do I get one of those cool red sashes?
Royal Guard Sashes are a symbol of membership to the Royal Guard and are often given out by the Commander of the Guard at the end of each event. If you happen to be lucky enough to attend an event, stick around afterward to see if the Commander will hand out sashes. Spamming "sash pls" or "OMG give me sash" often will hurt your chances at getting a sash and might even discourage the Commander from giving out sashes at that event.

1.
What are all these forums for? Which one should I use for my post?
Stratics has a large number of forums that can be used for a variety of purposes to meet each and every of your specific needs.
- For Shard Related matters use your Shard's Message Forum (in this case the Chesapeake Forum)
- For Professional and Skill Help use the Profession Forums (i.e. need Tinkering Info -> Tinkering Forum!)
- For General Discussions use the U.Hall

What is the RoC, and what will happen if I break the rules?
The RoC Stands for the Stratics Rules of Conduct which can be found here. The Rules of Conduct are meant to be followed and users who break them will be subject to warnings, or more seriously; temporary bans from the Stratics Network.
Is it ok to post [OT] posts with funny jokes, quizzes, etc?
OT posts are not only OK, but they're also welcomed as long as long as they don't end up going too Off-Topic (heated political discussions, etc). Acceptable OT posts can contain various things, from jokes to quizzes to information about upcoming holidays (i.e. Christmas decor).
The Chesapeake Forum also has a special "Babble Thread" which is explained in detail below.
Am I allowed to make posts with headers like [News], [ALERT!], etc?
Posts with titles such as [News], [Alert], [Important] and other uses of square brackets are reserved for use by Stratics Staff members only in order to alert Stratics Users of important information and events, as well as to help users easily identify official News posts. Using square bracket prefixes in your posts will result in having the post deleted and a warning sent to you via PM.
How does the Babble Thread work?
The Babble Thread is a special kind of OT post that's sticky. The Babble thread is an ongoing Off-Topic discussion where the subject changes over time and is often random. Have an interesting tidbit about real-life that you want to mention? Stick it in the babble thread and discuss!
The current babble thread owes its creation to G.v.P who pioneered the idea. New babble threads may be created in the future. If you have an idea for a topic-specific one, don't hesitate to contact one of the Chesapeake Forum Mods about it!
May I post Price Checks, and items for sale outside the Pricecheck/Sale threads?
The Price Check and Trade threads were created for the sole purpose of providing a clean location for these types of posts while being able to maximize exposure. However this does not mean that you absolutely MUST place your post there, it is primarily the ideal location for these posts. Therefore the short answer is: yes you may place these types of posts outside the special threads, but please be courteous and try not to fill the forum with only these types of posts.
How do I submit articles, events and other news to the Chesapeake News Page?
Submitting news to Stratics is easy and open to anyone. The first rule is that "Almost anything is acceptable news"! And the second rule is "Anyone can send in news"!
Having a special event that requires a large attendance? Send news in!
Witness a unique event on the shard? Send it in!
Part of a player-town and have something to report? Send it in!
Attended an EM event, wrote an article and want to publish it? Send it in!
Pictures are highly encouraged!
To send news of an Upcoming Event, send an email to uochesapeak e@ stratics.com and be sure to list the following details:
- Event organizer's name and contact info
- Event web page (if applicable)
- Event date and time
- Location of event and directions
- Description of event and things that will take place
- Any other information you feel is necessary
To send in a Written News Story, send an email to uochesapeak e@ stratics.com and be sure to list these details:
- Article author
- Title of Article
- Article itself
- Any other details pertaining to the article, including pictures
Tidbits or 'tipoffs' about shard happenings when you don't want to write an article yourself are also welcomed, and the reporters at Stratics will be very thankful of you for making their jobs easier!
Articles are usually published the same-day or sometimes the next day. Be sure to allow for sufficient time for your article to be published. It is recommended that all Event Postings be sent in as-close-to-a-week-prior-as-possible in order for your event to gain maximum exposure. Sending in news at the last minute will often result in your article not getting published until too late.
There are a few exceptions to the rule of "Anything is Acceptable News", those are:
- Guild advertisements such as "We're Recruiting" (these may be posted on the relative Stratics Forums)
- Unconfirmed news items, or issues that may be slanderous or unfounded
- Anything that violates UO's Terms of Service or Stratics' Rules of Conduct such as mentions of player-ran shards or bugs/exploits
So send in your news today!

How do I use the Events Calendar and ensure that the proper date and time shows up?
The Chesapeake Events Calendar is the perfect companion to your Event News Story and another easy-to-use function. Here's how:
One: Ensure that your Time Offset is set correctly so that your Event Calendar Post will appear as the correct time when other users view it. Often times events suffer from low participation because the Time Offset is set to default, resulting in an absurd time displaying like 12-Midnight.
To set your Time Offset go to the Stratics Forums Control Panel and at the bottom of that page, choose to edit "Display preferences, number of shown threads, languages, colors..." (or click here to access that page).
The third item down displays this:
Determine your time zone and enter the correct number into the box out of these choices:
- +3 for Eastern Time (New York, Atlanta, etc)
- +2 for Central Time (Chicago, Dallas, etc)
- +1 for Mountain Time (Utah, Colorado, etc)
- 0 for Pacific/Western time (Seattle, California, Oregon, etc)
This will now let your post Event Calendar posts with accuracy and also see the correct times on all forum posts.
Two: Head to the Chesapeake Event Calendar (click here) where you are presented with a month view. Now click "Add" on the date that you want to place an event on.
Three: Fill in the details including Event Title, Date (date is already set if you have clicked on a day), Time of Event, and Event Description. Be sure to include the location of the event for all to find and if applicable, a link to your web page. Then press Continue!
Four: Wait! Posts on the Event Calendar require Approval and this can sometimes take as much as one day to complete. Once approved your event will be available for everyone to see and will also appear on the Chesapeake Forum above all posts.

Community, Taverns, Player-Towns and Establishments
1.
What makes up the Chesapeake Community?
The Chesapeake Community is made up of player-towns, establishments, roleplayers, guilds, individuals and all others who are interested in giving a social life to Chesapeake.
Are there any regular nights where the Community meets as a whole?
Yes. Each and every Wednesday Night at 9:00 pm EST the shard, together, puts on Chesapeake Community Night! Chesapeake Community Night is a chance for everyone from every facet and part of the shard to get together to have fun and/or accomplish large tasks, like quests or Champ Spawns. The Community Night formula is simple:
Attend Chesapeake Community Night and Propose an Event!
If your event sounds good, you'll soon have a number of people that will be following you, so lead on!
Come to participate? Then simply look for someone who's running an event and get involved!
Community Nights take place at the Skara Brae Community Center which is easy to find:
Where are the roleplayers on Chesapeake?
Roleplaying in its current incarnation is scarce on most shards, however it does exist in several areas on Chesapeake:
- The City Of PaxLair and Alliance - a player ran town in Felucca with over 7 years of history and lore; now including a Tokuno town called PaxOku
- Gyldenfeld, the Red Wolf Cafe and Fellowship of Virtue - although they consider themselves non-RP, many elements of the Cafe and village have roleplayed flavor
- Village of Concordia - the town of Vav and DwB, roleplaying is a must (slightly dormant as of 18/11/2005)
- Town of Silvervale - a town founded on roleplay (slightly dormant as of 18/10/2005)

PvP Community, Fel Champ Spawns, Factions and Active PvP Areas

What are some of the largest PvP-oriented guilds on the shard?
Chesapeake's largest PvP Guilds are often, but not always listed in the top membership rankings of Guilds on UO.com. A quick glance at this list, as of 18/11/2005 shows these PvP guilds, ordered by number of members:

Is it safe these days to do a Fel Champ Spawn by myself or with a few friends?
As anyone will tell you: be wary when venturing into Felucca, especially near Idols of the Champions. Many of the larger PvP guilds on the shard attempt to lay claim to Champ Spawns, utilizing a variety of methods ranging from repetitive hourly patrols to the popular 'ghost cam' method. Safety at Champion Spawns depends entirely on how fast you can complete the Spawn and how well you can defend from invaders. Stay sharp!
Are factions dead, or are they still hopping on Chesapeake?
Factions on Chesapeake are still running solid, although membership numbers are limited and most sigils and towns are constantly controlled by Chesapeake's major PvP guilds' Faction affiliate guilds.
More information on Chesapeake Factions is listed at this link.
Where are Chesapeake's hottest PvP areas?
Looking to kill, or be killed? Your best bet for instant fighting, like on any shard, is the Felucca Yew Moongate. Your second best option would be the Felucca Britain Moongate. Also be sure to visit the many Champ Spawns that litter Felucca, as most of the large PvP guilds frequent those areas hourly.
Are there regular PvP Contests, Tournaments or Fight Nights?
As of October 2005, the City Of PaxLair once again runs Friday Night Fights (continued after a summer break from hosting them). More information on Friday Night Fights can be found on PaxLair's Friday Night Fight Site.
CHAMPS! also runs tournaments from time to time. Their latest event was a 3-part competition called the Tournament of Champions which took place in October. The three categories were a Myaloium (mage battle), an Oploium (dexxer battle) and a Pankration (ultimate mixed battle). One additional event was a team battle Triathlon.
E
Shard History and Unique Places
1.
What is the basic history of the Chesapeake Shard and its player-ran aspects?
A very brief precis of Chesapeake Community and RP History:
In 1997 Chesapeake was born. Within no-time mines were mined out, and gold was earned; which gave way to the first guilds on the shard. Among these guilds were community-based guilds like The Band and The Sillyhood, as well as player-killer guilds like Keepers of Chaos. In the days of only Felucca people had a tendency to stick together, and so several player towns were formed. Most famous of all was PaxLair, followed by Corwyn, Aryslan, Haven, Humility, Shadowcove, the Duir of Yew, Oberon Pass, Dragons Watch, the Olag Hai Orc Fort and the vampire town of Gehenna.
Within a year these towns had grown to such a level that player-governments were established along with inter-town co-operation setups, basically forming a "Chesapeake Community". Player towns in Felucca were not entirely safe though, and the PK guilds often appeared to collect taxes. A flourishing Community was host to literally dozens of daily scheduled events (weddings, trials, openings of taverns, poetry recitals, etc) as well as an uncountable number impromptu gatherings at such popular hangout locations as the PaxLair Saloon, Gehenna Spire, Duir Tavern, Black Rose Brewery and the Falconers Inn.
Then came Trammel.
Many of the Feluccan towns and Establishments were abandoned for the PK-free lifestyle in Trammel, where new towns were started and new adventures were had. Some of the popular areas of Trammel included Mythndale, Silvervale, Nidaros, Casandreal, Akalabeth, Camelot and New Shadowcove. The Trammel era lasted a few years, but was brought to a halt with the opening of Malas.
The early Malas years were the end of organized player-ran activity, as Britannia's population dwindled. In the midst of this decline, new areas such as the Red Wolf Cafe of Gyldenfeld were born, along with similar small establishments. The old Feluccan towns suffered greatest during these days, and many had fallen into permanent ruin. PaxLair, once the most popular area on the shard was reduced to a startlingly small population and areas like Corwyn were actively packaged up, having their doors firmly bolted down with wood - for ever.
Chesapeake History changed once again with the creation of the Islands of Tokuno where PaxOku - an area of PaxLair - was founded. The Red Wolf Cafe and other independent establishments picked up in popularity and community seemed to stabilize with the creation of weekly "Chesapeake Community Nights" and the two-week victory over the Invasion of Britain by swarms of ratmen, trolls, ettins and ogres. Throughout these last few years, several of the shard's key leaders, including Winfield of PaxLair, Tancred RedStar and Xotche of Meade helped to bring about large, organized, community-wide player events called "Seasonal Festivals" which included Octoberfests, and Winter, Spring and Summer Festivals.
Which brings us to now. Where will Chesapeake be in a few years? Only time will tell!
Is there a list of former Establishments, Player Towns or Taverns?
The City of PaxLair has a highly comprehensive list of former community locations on Chesapeake. See here for that.
A Stratics list will be complied in the future.
Is there a list of Special, Blessed or otherwise Unique locations on Chesapeake?
There will be a Stratics list of these locations soon.
Where can I read Fawne Goldynhart's award winning tale of Chesapeake History?
Fawne Goldynhart's award-winning recollection of Chesapeake's History can be found here on the main page of Chesapeake-Stratics.
How can I become a part of Chesapeake History?
While this is a very broad question to answer, there are a few simple things that an individual can do to become a future part of Chesapeake History.
First: simply get involved. Attend Community Nights, player-ran events, visit player-towns and taverns and involve yourself with some of the more popular guilds on the shard.
Additionally, if you're so bold: start something new! New things are born on Chesapeake every day. Something like the Red Wolf Cafe, only a few years old now has just as much history and substance as a city such as PaxLair, which is entering its 8th year.
As well: act as a liaison between different groups in the community. Having a vast knowledge of the shard can empower you to meet with new people and help plan and run large-scale events like Seasonal Festivals, or Olympics.
And finally: stay informed. News is important as it builds your knowledge of all things going on and allows you to expand your horizons so that you have a more solid base on which to create something unique for the shard. And News is enjoyable too. Who knows, one day you could be on the other side of the pen!

Shopping Centers, Vendor Malls and Getting Around
1.
Where are the best areas on the shard to shop for items?
The easiest to find, and most common shopping center is the city of Luna which often is also home to high and inflated prices. Other shopping areas are the Yew and Britain moongates, city of Zento, area of Gyldenfeld (Brit/Skara/Yew X Roads) and the areas outside Luna/Umbra.
I don't want to pay Luna prices, are there cheaper vendor malls elsewhere?
Just when you think you found the lowest price, there's always somebody who's selling it for lower!
Some of the best, and lowest priced vendors can be found in obscure locations like the middle of the jungle or along one of the many roads of Britannia. One of the best locations for cheap items is the small collection of vendor houses near Dungeon Destard in Trammel.
Where's the best place to sell my stuff?
In Game: try the Luna Bank first as it's the most popular bank. Also try the Britain Bank and Moonglow Bank.
Online: try our very own Buy/Sell/Trade thread on the Chesapeake Forum or one of the many online trade forum sites for UO.
Are there any good Rune Libraries?
