Summer winds brought an evening heat and perhaps butte curses to June’s Best Shot in the Realm, which took place Saturday night at the Skara Brae Fairegrounds.
Toni Fierce, GM of Misfits of Society, and Master of Ceremonies for the BSR contests, welcomed the fourteen archers who attended the event and set out the rules.
In what would mark the start of an evening of mixed results and shifty targets, the archery buttes immediately disqualified Richard Lionhart, professional marksman and past BSR winner in the first shoot-off. James would also be disqualified in the first round, while SoMeOnE and Ahebban wiped sweat from their brows, barely clearing the required seventy points. Meanwhile, Debi and Lazarus each kept their cool, splicing robinhoods each to advance to the next round.
In Round Two, a jittery Felina resolved to face down the curse of the buttes and scored two bullseyes to clear the hurdle of 100 points needed to make Round Three. Rufus, Aerowyn Faeryn, and SoMeOnE each shot perfect rounds (SoMeOnE’s victory especially impressive despite a faulty butte which claimed his unscored robinhood), while the buttes consumed four more archers, including Debi who had been the clear victor of the first round.
Round Three began with Toni frowning at the buttes, and asking participants not to leave if they didn’t clear the 150 point requirement. The way the night was going, it seemed possible that there might not be clear victors to advance to the fourth round. Sure enough, it seemed to be headed in that direction until Aerowyn Faeryn and Chango cleared perfect round, only two of the eight remaining archers to make it to the final round.
Defiant, the targets seemed to dodge the shafts as neither Chango nor Aerowyn could come up with the 200 points necessary to move to a fifth round, but instead tied with 110 points apiece, resulting in a final shoot-off.
In the final pairing, each archer given five shots, a resolved Aerowyn finally overcame the curse of the buttes and achieved four perfect shots, with a robinhood as her fifth, for 300 points and the win of June’s Best Shot in the Realm.
Congratulations to Aerowyn Faeryn, whose purse included an engraved bow, a 1 million gold check and a seat in the season-ending Champion of Champions shoot-off.
July’s BSR date will be announced as soon as it is available. Thanks to all who participated and see you next month!
