<font size=+1>FoF: Asked and Answered
</font> Jeremy Dalberg
22 Feb 2008 17:14:44

Another round of questions out of the feedback pile, plus a slew of Playguide updates and a QA-tested sneak peek at the next publish!</p>

"While Discorded, do your skills gain as if you were your actual skill level or the level that your skill drops to?" </p>

Your Discorded skill level is used to calculate your skill gain chance - so for difficulty-based skills, you can gain skill by using abilities or spells that would normally be too easy. This isn't capped at all. There's an explanation of difficulty-based skills <a target="_blank" href=http://guide.uo.com/skills.html> Here </A> - keep in mind that moderately difficult (50% success rate or so) abilities have the best chance to earn you skill gains.</p>

"How do you recharge the Jacob's Pickaxe when it says Uses Remaining : 0?"</p>

Wait! It recharges uses over time - one charge every 5 minutes. You don't have to be logged in to recharge it, although it may take a few minutes to "catch up." (It also will only recharge to its max of 20 charges.)</p>

"Are there tameables that have skills that don't appear on the Animal Lore gump? If so, which ones are they and what skills do they have that we can't see? Any chance you guys can add these skills to the Animal Lore gump?"</p>

Leurocian says,</p>

"Yes - Parry and Lumberjacking immediately come to mind. It would be nice at some point to revamp the Animal Lore gump to include more information. No promises!"</p>

(The fact that there can be "invisible" skills is why it's impossible to calculate the barding difficulty by hand, and why Animal Lore does it for you. We don't have a convenient way to look up every possible critter, but revamping the gump has gone on my Nag List :) ) </p>

"How, exactly, does the talisman bonus % to success and exceptional work?"</p>

It's additive - so if you have a 50% chance of success (or exceptional) and put on a +25% talisman, you'd have a 75% chance of success (or exceptional.)</p>

The altered percentage should be displayed in the crafting menu - however, if you are looking at an item's page and you add or remove a talisman, you will have to refresh the page (by going back to the main menu or closing/reopening the window) in order to see the change.</p>

"Where are the other Town Halls going to be this year?"</p>

I'll have specific dates and locations as we get confirmation, but here's the broad overview:</p> <ul>Jacksonville, FL - next weekend
<ul>Rockville, MD - May 10
<ul>San Diego, CA - summer
<ul>Seattle, WA - later summer
<ul>Austin, TX - fall
<ul>Chicago, IL - winter
Playguide Update Roundup:</p>

Got the equipment info in slightly better shape, and I'm working my way through old publish notes - slowly, but surely!</p>

<a target="_blank" href=http://guide.uo.com/itemproperties_0.html> Item Properties </A>: Rewrote the Mana and Life Leech bits several times - they may even be accurate now.</p>

<a target="_blank" href=http://guide.uo.com/itemproperties_3.html> Runic Properties </A>: Edited explanatory text to match new intensity changes.</p>

<a target="_blank" href=http://guide.uo.com/weapons_6.html> Sheilds </A>: Brought back this page, added strength requirement, and rewrote the text to be accurate post-AoS.</p>

<a target="_blank" href=http://guide.uo.com/weapons_0.html> Armor </A>: Added SE and Elven base armor set details. (Note - haven't added the new helms yet.)</p>

: Redesigned page to accomodate future updates - if you haven't seen the artifact screenshot <a target="_blank" href=http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=322> Submission Request , go check it out!</p>

<a target="_blank" href=http://guide.uo.com/siege_2.html> Seige Perilous </A>: Added Siege Blessing info</p>

<a target="_blank" href=http://guide.uo.com/combat_7.html> Damage Types </A>: Added a brief note on direct damage.</p>

<a target="_blank" href=http://guide.uo.com/skill_1003.html> Skill and Stat Caps </A>: Added individual stat caps.</p>

<a target="_blank" href=http://guide.uo.com/skill_49.html> Necromancy </A>: Clarified Vampiric Embrace life drain, added correct duration and damage for Poison Strike.</p>

<a target="_blank" href=http://guide.uo.com/skill_53.html> Ninjitsu </A>: Added melee-only restriction to Ki Attack.</p>

<a target="_blank" href=http://guide.uo.com/skill_54.html> Spellweaving </A>: Corrected Word of Death's damage type.</p>

<a target="_blank" href=http://guide.uo.com/skill_52.html> Bushido </A>: Added Honorable Execution not applying to PvP and weapon skill bonus for Evasion duration.</p>

What's To Come:</p>

I've got a list of confirmed bug fixes for the next publish back from QA - we're still a couple weeks out from getting it to test, but here's what's done so far:</p> <ul>Weapons should no longer lose properties when runic- or exceptionally-crafted. This should apply to everything, including ML recipe weapons
<ul>ML recipe bows will be able to be exceptionally crafted and get the Arms Lore bonus as well
<ul>Greater Dragons will give scales and barbed leather
<ul>Armor that doesn't have a meditation penalty - like leather armor - won't lose properties when runic-crafted
<ul>Runic-crafted elven armor won't roll Night Sight as a property
<ul>Parasitic, Darkglow, and Invisibility potions can be placed into kegs
Jacksonville Town Hall</p>

The Jacksonville Town Hall is next weekend! If you haven't <a target="_blank" href=http://www.mythicentertainment.com/uo/> RSVPed </A> yet, now would be an excellent time to do so.</p>

For our mid-Atlantic players, the May Town Hall meeting is also posted - you can get details on the <a target="_blank" href=http://town.uo.com/luncheon.html> TownHall Page </A> and RSVP for that one as well. If you're in the neighborhood, don't miss out!</p>

Next week's Five on Friday will probably be on Thursday, as I'm flying to Jacksonville Friday night. Have a good week, folks!</p>

MMm so elf armor won't get nightsight. Will that just not show up as a property? or will it still take up a runic spot but just not appear (like with the tailor runic kits with mage armor).

No world shattering information here, but I REALLY hope that the dev team keeps players in the know like they've been doing the past two weeks with changes (like what's here in the FoF which was culled from stratics). Having an idea of what the team is actually DOING is a refreshing change of pace, imo.

If the FoF actually answered questions that people ask. How about actually crediting the people that asked the question, or at least how many of us asked the question.

Maybe then I wouldn't always have the distinct feeling that 99% of FoF questions and answers were just made up on the fly by Jeremy as a "last thing to do before I turn out the Lights for the weekend." *sighs*

Yes they were in Chicago for townhall back in late summer...i didnt get to go but from waht i heard it wasnt a very good one. Would be nice to come back to Indy again since its been a few years...hehe for those of us who cant travel far. But no biggie. As long as the Five on Friday isn't the only source of UO news (which it hasn't been for the past 2 weeks) there is not as much reason to complain about it. So what if it wasn't as good compared to last week's or your question was not in there. As long as the developers keep posting, keep delivering and keep up what they are currently doing that is OK in my book.

Willa,

Its not really that difficult, just get your nearest city to build a Dave &amp; Busters.

Since thats the only place that seems to be able to cater to EAMythic.

God forbid that they spend some of the money collected over the last 10 years and rent a conference room in a nice hotel, so there would be no rush to leave.

Personally I could go without EAMythic "buying me" lunch, I would rather have a more meaty and indepth town hall.

[/ QUOTE ]

Invis always was keggable but the kegs were bugged, always labeled as "muddled liquid", and more recently (I haven't played actively in a while), I had heard an additional bug with the invis pots was that the potion bottles decanted from a keg had the label nightsight. (*edit* tried it this evening and verified that is the case).

Parasitic and darkglow have never stacked as bottles nor went into kegs when I tried them in the past, and I tried them plenty when I was running an alchemy potion vendor. They finally made the 2 new poisons stackable in one of the more recent patches, but when you attempt to place the potions in a keg, you get the message "the keg is not designed to hold that type of object".

I went to the very first California Townhall meeting just after Samurai Empire came out and it was held at a confference room at the EA Offices in Long Beach area. No Food or reffreshments were offered but there was a ton of people there and a lot of prizes and such. I think the Dave &amp; Buster idea is a good one. It is a little more comfortable and warm and deffinately better food.

Maybe they meant other guys who you can Animal Lore, and not tameables...since, we know a few monsters do have LJ. Maybe Rune Beetles have LJ hehe...who knows

Anyway, Corpse Skin is still wrong

<blockquote><hr>

Corpse Skin
Words of Power: In Aglo Corp Ylem
Reagents: BW, GD
Casting Time: 2 seconds
Mana Cost: 11
Effect: Inflicts necrosis upon the skin of the Necromancer or another target, making them more resistant to poison, cold and physical damage, but extremely vulnerable to fire. Duration in Seconds = (Caster's Spirit Speak - Target's Resist) ÷ 2.5 + 40

Yeah, when I told Jeremy that answer, I wasn't thinking just tameables. I was thinking that we sometimes have creatures that possess lumberjacking and swordsmanship. Animal Lore in this case wouldn't display the lumberjacking skill. So my bad on that one

Please, don't do Chicago - Chicago's NOT as convenient as you coastal types seem to think. I've worked anime conventions (as staff) in Chicago for 10 years, and just driving from one side to the other can take longer than a drive from the VA offices to Baltimore - ESPECIALLY the time of day that the meetings occur. Combine that with the long drives from any other major city not in Wisconsin, and you're about guaranteed a Town hall that's nothing but Chicago locals and a few Cheeseheads. Even GARY, INDIANA residents typically have to spend more time crossing Chicago at the height of the day (remember, this is on a Saturday, and BOTH the Sox and Cubs depend on that Interstate for their attendees - unless yo want to add an hour to your drive and pay $10+ to go around the NW toll road loop), than driving from Gary to Indianapolis.

As you list stands now, Much of the EASTERN US is a 6+ hour drive each way from a meeting. Columbus last year was better than Chicago, but was still out of the way for many, even there. And, it seemed to have been timed to correspond with Origins (the primarily Board &amp; card gaming convention).

Much more centrally located would be INDIANAPOLIS - especially if held during Gen Con. You may not realize it, but it is much easier for St. Louis residents to get to Indy than to the NW side of Chicago (IIRC where your last Chicago meetup was). Indy would also open up many more TN, KY, MO, and KS persons to attend (as well as being easily reachable by all the OH, MI, WV and western PA people who made it to Columbus last year).

If you really want to get in touch with the gamers, including former players you'd want to bring back in, Gen Con is a much better choice, anyway. Just look at all the D&amp;D discussion that bounced in when Jeremy accidentally called Magic Arrow, Magic Missile - Or how three people on one of the smallest shards (Lake Austin) ended up discussing Rifts. UO Players have played (and often still DO play) the dice and paper games, more than other computer games - and probably in a higher percentage than any other MMO group, other than the WAR people waiting in the wings. For that matter, Gen Con would be a good place to plug (and have a town hall) for DAoC and WAR, as well.

There's only one thing good going for Chicago, and that's O'Hare being a major hub. The problem is that such convenience is overwhelmed by Chicago really SUCKING for anyone to get to by ground, unless you're local and grab a Metra or CTA train. You'd be much better off flying into Indy, getting a room somewhere (even if a few miles offsite, like Dave &amp; Busters was a good 15-20 miles from Origins last year), and actually hawking your products to 30,000 potential customers, when not actually at the Town Hall.

Hell, one of the reason you blew up Haven, was because of the bizarre rubberbanding and other graphic/movement behaviors I showed Vex and others at the EA Booth AT GEN CON 4 or 5 years ago (and that wasn't even AT the Town hall, though I attended the Town hall as well)!

Sometimes it's easier to SHOW a problem, than describe it in a Bug Report.

And yeah, a hand-in for snake skins would be cool, or something useful we could craft or do with them!

I've noticed some points:

"Necromancy: Clarified Vampiric Embrace life drain, added correct duration and damage for Poison Strike.":poison Strike is explained as follows:
<blockquote><hr>

Poison Strike
Words of Power: In Vas Nox
Reagents: NC
Casting Time: 7 seconds
Mana Cost: 17
Effect: Summons a cloud of poison to strike down your enemy. Minimum base damage is 32. Also, affects a radius of 2 tiles around the target. Those within that radius will receive "splash" damage. Splash Damage = Unmodified Target Damage ÷ (Distance_In_Tiles + 1)

[/ QUOTE ]
Casting Time: 7 tics = 1.75 seconds
Base damage is 32.
The damage of poison strike is based on SpiritSpeak as well as the damage of attacking magery spells is based on EI.

SS=0: damage of poison strike=9-12
SS=50: damage of poison strike=24-30
SS=78: damage of poison strike=32-40(here is the base damage)
SS=100: damage of poison strike=38-48
SS=120: damage of poison strike=44-55

And does "splash damage" mean "direct damage"? It is wrong if so. This is poison damage that can be reduced by poison resistence.

--

"Bushido: Added Honorable Execution not applying to PvP and weapon skill bonus for Evasion duration.":
<blockquote><hr>

The duration is 3-6 seconds, with a 2 second bonus for Bushido above 100 AND both Tactics and Anatomy that are 100 or better. Evasion can only be used once every 20 seconds.

[/ QUOTE ]
not a 2 second bonus but a second bonus: max 7 seconds.

Is this the proper place to propose questions for next friday?

I am particularly interested in knowing whether or not the enhancement of weapons with the various ore types could reduce the total damage do to rounding. Let me give an example of what I mean.

Valorite enhanced weapon distributes damage
Physical 40%, Fire 10%, Cold 20%, Poison 10%, Energy 20%.

If the weapon has a base damage of 13 then it will do the following damage:
Physical 5.2, Fire 1.3, Cold 2.6, Poison 1.3, and Energy 2.6.

If fractional damage is rounded down a valorite enhanced weapon could reduce total damage by 2 points. If the damage is rounded up a potential benefit of 5 points occurs.

I'm still wondering the same about why they don't come to Charlotte NC. It's more centrally located in the South East, it's the 20th largest City in the US (Bigger than Atlanta where they do occasionally go) Has decent facilities all over town (If anyone at EA/Mythic would like a List PM me.) has a major Airline hub in the city, good public transit, easy access to 2 major interstates and within 2-3 hours drive to 3 others.

Might I humbly suggest Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada? I mean, it's larger than Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada. Sure the public transit sucks, but you can get anywhere in the city in under twenty minutes by car. We have the brewery that won Canadian brewery of the year. The brewery runs two restaurants with great food, and the beer really did deserve the award. *tries to think of other good reasons...* It's called "The Hub of the Maritimes", The Rolling Stones played here, and it was a terrific concert... It has two official languages... *sigh* Ok, ok, I can always dream...

Oh, thank you very much for your kind reply! Now I can understand completely what is explained!

"Unmodified Target Damage" means that the damage would not be divided by the number of opponents like chain lightning or meteor swarm. Then it is correct.

Kynd? You're joking about Indy, right???

You can get to Indy from Michigan much quicker than getting to the west side of Chicago from there, via US 31 from South Bend to Indy. Hell, I just drove that road a few weeks ago in a BLIZZARD, and it was quicker each way than going to far side of Chicago from South Bend.

12+ years ago, I might have agreed with you, because US 31 from South Bend to Indy was a 2-lane hell back then, but since then it has been expanded 4+ lanes all the way from the loop around Indy to at least the Notre Dame campus, which is less than 5 miles from the MI line, and well less than a mile from the I-80/90 toll road. In fact, it's only 130 miles from South Bend to the convention center where Gen Con is, compared to almost the exact same distance (but with tolls and Chicago nightmare traffic) to the area of Chicago where the Town Hall has been in the past. (I just checked both routes on Google maps, BTW - going AROUND Chicago, instead of the shortest (but most congested and under constant construction) route adds 40 miles and more tolls)

As for Detroit, it would probably be a good place for getting the Central Canadian players to a Town Hall, but it wouldn't be convenient to anyone south of the Ohio River, or west of the Mississippi. Now, if they had a Town Hall in Detroit next year the same time as the Palladium Books open house, I might could make it there by combining trips.

Because I don't have an answer - it's something we keep talking about, but I don't have an ETA. I know Draconi has plans for them, but until I can tell you something useful I'm not going to take up space in the FoF with a non-answer.

For our mid-Atlantic players, the May Town Hall meeting is also posted - you can get details on the TownHall Page and RSVP for that one as well.

How about a UO Townhall Cruise.
I recommend the Disney Wonder, it's an amazing ship and great fun.
