This week, I heard of a new type of ore that was being found here and there in the land.
Having spent most of my life mining, I had to investigate!
So, I loaded up my trusty beetle's pack with shovels, picks, and prospecting tools, and set out to dig.
I dug. And dug. And dug.
I travelled around, from Minoc to Trinsic to Umbra to Ocllo, to the Orc caves and Exodus dungeon, and many places besides. I went into the Ancient Wyrm's cave near the Compassion shrine, and into Saliva's tree. Round and about the dungeons, and even into the lair of the great glutton, near Papua.

After many hours, my joints were aching, my supply of ingots had grown substantially, and my beetle's pack had run out of digging tools.
And, though I had many precious jewels, ingots, and blisters, I did not have one solitary piece of this fabled substance.

Then, word reached me of a spot in the lost lands. I rarely mined there, as it was far too quiet.

But, today, it was not quiet at all. Many strange roars reached my ears, and my beetle clicked nervously 'Dark! Darck-k-kk!'
I then trod on what felt like a slime. But no slime ever struck at me with a force unequalled by any dragon!
As I rode back the way I'd come, franticly trying to heal myself, a great rock-like fist struck me from the side, nearly ending my life! Then, swirling energies struck me from all sides, and I was, once more, on my way to find a healer.

Thankfully, I knew the way from there to the portal that leads to the island temple. There's nothing quite like an island getaway after being pounded mercilessly by strange creatures!

Undeterred, I travelled back, listening to my bug's clicking, which guided me in keeping to the shadows.
I was able to avoid the creatures, though once or twice, one passed near, and the energy emanating from it singed my hair!

At the back of the small clearing, I found several large crystals, not unlike those found in Malas. But Malas never spawned anything like these monsters!

I then took out my shovel, and began to dig. The rock was strange, and yeilded no ore, and no stone. I dug into it for what felt like hours, before a small, smooth rock appeared beneath my shovel. I had found it! Blackrock!

Now, many of you will want the facts about these monsters, and this rock.

Those who do not, pray, read no further.

The monsters are simple enough. Their auras damage all living creatures within a small area of them, about five steps away.
The vortexes seem to use magic, and the slimes shoot fireballs, or perhaps energy bolts.
The elementals strike physically, but their blows carry a good deal of energy as well.
A passing expert in animals tells me they would all take about 2000 blows by a mongbat to die, if they were unable to heal themselves. Sadly, they ARE able to heal themselves.

To find the blackrock, you will need to have reached the level of grandmaster in mining, and should ideally have a pair of ringmail mining gloves on.
You will also need to have visited gargoyle city, and read their book regarding stone mining.

Then, simply mine anywhere within the area that the monsters dwell - even on the grass.
You will not get any ore or stone from this, and you will only be rewarded with blackrock now and then.
It does seem to come at a higher rate of occurance than, say, rare gems, but not as frequently as high quality stone does.

After about half an hour of digging, I was suddenly told "you are infused with the energy of the area!" and a blackrock elemental spawned right on top of me. Off to the healers again...!

There are two places to mine, to the best of my knowledge.
One is far south-east of the passage to Minoc, near Khaldun, and the other is far north of Papua, in the desert, in the general direction of the Oasis champion spawn.

As to how you get a blackrock elemental to die, I do not know. I was not able to so much as scratch them, although I went back and forth several times. I tried magery, various pets, a good mace, a good sword, and a touch of spellweaving. All to no avail. I think these creatures, much like the Grim Reaper, will generally require a team effort, though I'm sure someone will be along shortly to boast of how they slew 15 of them with one hand tied behind his back, and juggling fine china plates at the same time.

Still, I hope that information helps you.

I locked a few down in a friend's house last night. The rocks and the house are still there.

I am having VERY GOOD luck or they are not as rare to mine.

I got 16 during the time it took to investigate for that news article - about 45 minutes of blackrock mining. I wish I'd used up all the other picks and shovels in the right spot!

So, two questions:

1. What's the (current) going price on lumps of blackrock?

2. Do we have any good backpack art designers who can make some pictures with the stuff?

I did some Mining myself today, and here are the results I got.

First time I had just the 20 Jack-of-all trade Mining skill and used 1 Sturdy
shovel with some 720 uses. For my time I got 13 Large Pieces of Blackrock
totaling some 161 Stones. Smallest was 4 Stone, and the largest was 24
Stone.

On the second trip I had GM Mining, another Sturdy Shovel, again with some
720 Uses. This time I received 23 Large Pieces of Blackrock totaling some 364
Stone. Smallest was 3 stone, largest, of which there were 5, were 25 Stone.

Conclude from this what you will.

Sometime this weekend, I think i'll take a 3 Stone Piece, go to Luna and try a
little experiment, Just to see what happens.

Another shovel used. 26 more Blackrock totaling 361 Stones.
Apparently, having GM Mining does increase the chances of digging up some of
the Rock, but the average size is random.

You are correct, sir.

I have tried a similar experiment, and have the following to report:

One hour spent mining in each scenario.
Only using sturdy pickaxes.
All mining done on the same spot.

With 100 mining:
21 pieces
1 elemental

With 100 mining and +5 gloves:
24 pieces (almost one every 2 minutes)
2 elementals

With Jack-of-all-trades mining:
13 pieces
0 elementals

Only wearing the +5 gloves, J-o-a-t mining:
8 pieces
1 elemental

Oh, and I gained one annoyed scribe who is complaining that I'm filling her keep up with blackrock. I'd better be careful - she has 120 magery!

Vas Kal An Mani In Corp Hur Tym to you, too.

Have a bunch of small pieces of blackrock, now what?

What are they used for? What are they worth? Does anyone care?

Just tried my little experiment with a 10 Stone Blackrock.
Nothing unusual to report.

PS. If anyone comes across my Left Arm, I'd appreciate its return.

Has any one tried casting armegedon at less than 120 magery on the larger rocks?

Come on Otto! Just pick up a hefty piece and say"Vas Kal An Mani In Corp Hur Tym" It will be fine!

Just tried with a Wand equiped, and a couple Jewls on giving me 116 Magery.
Got that "You feel uneasy... but nothing happens" message.

Jack of all trades miner? not gm?

[/ QUOTE ]
Read again, sir. My first two experiments were done at GM mining skill.

As to the magery, I fear mine is legendary, or jack-of-all-trades, depending on how close to a fiendish stone I have wandered that day. Still, there's this good looking fellow in KSS who only has 110 magery, perhaps I'll ask him to give it a whirl.

To those who don't know yet, and I know there's one of you under a rock somewhere, the blackrock is used to cast the Armageddon spell. While the precise motions, items, and words to it seem to be somewhat lost, we do know that saying "Vas Kal An Mani In Corp Hur Tym" while standing near a piece of blackrock is part of it. Now, can someone help me scrape Bea off the ceiling?

That's a mighty pretty explosion!

Has anyone tried using it to blow up the obsidian elementals yet?

Right.Advice time.

Folks, if a blind man ever comes up to you and says "Just stand over here, and read these words out loud, would you?", RUN!

I started off on the roof of my keep. I didn't stay there long.

Yes, it really did blow me right off the roof.

No, the blast didn't kill me, but I think that's only because I had some really good armor on, which Otto is now busily repairing for me!

You'll note that he's nowhere to be seen in the picture - hiding below, behind several feet of solid stone!

The good news is, my eyebrows should grow back eventually.

I've noticed when we tested 9 pieces of the small black rock, you only get knocked down in malas, and blown to bits in Fel. Am i right with this knowledge? Maybe we are further from the source of it in Malas, and thus it is less powerful?

I did my test at the Luna Bank, and yes, I'm still looking for my Left Arm.

My testing was done in Fel, I'm afraid. So there goes that theory!

Kat and I blew ourselves to smithereens in Malas. I had 115 magery.

I just spend an hour using up another shovel, 704 uses, and only picked up 15
pieces averaging 10 stone each. Either I had a run of bad luck, or the powers
that be tweeked the numbers a bit. I also wonder if there is a finite amount of
this stuff we can dig up.
