November’s Best Shot in the Realm, for years a staple of the Society of Archers Guild, was held on a pleasant Saturday evening with 24 archers vying for the elusive crown. This year’s event, hosted by Misfits of Society, ran smoothly with the exception of a few interesting side-show distractions — A roving peasant, a couples' spat, MT, and a Turkey shoot at the finish.
A lost and obviously confused peasant named Miguel walked thru the archers' line of sight a few times before wandering off into the woods.
While this reporter was recording scores I overheard parts of a conversation that went something like this:
FERN: “what are you doing here?”
NICHOLAS THE OLD: “watching this archery contest, dear”
FERN: “NO come with me! “
NICHOLAS THE OLD: “but”
FERN: “no buts, come now!”
NICHOLAS THE OLD: “yes dear”
The rest of the conversation was off screen. Nicholas the Old, we wish you luck. (P.S.: try flowers).
Gracing this night's BSR was none other then MT a.k.a. Moving Target, the present GM of The Society of Archers guild and a talented archer in his own right. While making his 1st visit to the revived BSR this reporter didn’t get an opportunity to ask him all those “What ya Think” questions, Hmnn maybe next time.
As for the turkey shoot, more on that later.
.
Toni Fierce welcomed all the archers and after giving the night's instructions the 1st round began with M!S shooter Dirnim loosing the 1st arrow. As usual this round was merely practice for many with only Pol the Shepard and Fyiera Fyre falling by the wayside and a new 1st round low was shot with a “5.” Maybe next time use the bow as a club? lol. Pol the Shepherd received the First Out Consolation Prize. On a side note, Fyiera would’ve won the night’s best-dressed award had there been such a thing. Jonah shot the night's 1st robin hood (RH).
The 2nd round was a mix of “Ohhhs” and “Ahhhs” with some like Moving Target, Cherokee, and Greyheart posting RHs, and a couple of talented archers falling to the whims of the buttes.
The 3rd round where only the perfection of 3 perfect shots will move you to what is thought the champion round saw Dirnim and Lazarus warming for the finals with RHs (200 points). A number of “can win anytime” shooters fell aside including talented Llama, 2-time winner Sean Brega, MT, Jonah. Chango, Lynx, Greyheart, and Moo Goo Gai Pan.
Nine shooters moved to round 4 where the champion is usually crowned. This 200 point winner round means not only do you have to be perfect, but you have to split, YES SPLIT, one of your already shot arrows. Lady Kathryn, the night's 2nd shooter and already a monthly winner showed the night could be hers with a 200 and hopes of joining Sean Brega as a yearly 2-time winner. But not yet, as Cherokee, a M!S member also posted a 200 and a 5 shot shoot-off was added to the night. Lady Kathryn showed her mettle by shooting 3 bulls-eyes, a RH and an inner ring shot to post a formidable 260. Not to be dismayed, Cherokee was beyond perfect with 4 bulls-eyes and a robin hood for her 300 score and the crown of November's Greatest Archer, a million gold check, an engraved bow, and a seat in the seasons ending Champion of Champions shoot-off , tentatively scheduled for late January 2010.
As for the turkey shoot, while Cherokee was being awarded her prizes, a wild turkey mistakenly ventured into the area and was routinely dispatched by many archers. Not a very smart turkey to enter an area with 20 plus armed archers, but Thanksgiving wasn’t far off at the time.
CONGRATULATIONS to Cherokee, M!S's 1st archer to capture this year's monthly crown!
The next BSR is scheduled for Saturday, December 12th at 8:30 pm Pacific (9:30pm Mountain, 10:30pm Central, 11:30 pm Eastern). M!S encourages all archers of the land to attend and participate for their chance to win!
