The Best Shot in the Realm (BSR), Baja's free archery contest, and a staple on the shard for many years had its season-ending contest on Saturday, December 12th, 2009. Toni Fierce, GM of Misfits of Society, the sponsor of the 2009 BSR, gathered 20 plus archers at the Skara Brae fairgrounds for the last seat and the last chance to be titled a monthly winner and an automatic entry into the Champions of Champions shoot-off.
The Champion of Champions shoot-off and the title of BAJA’S greatest archer of 2009 will be held on January 16, 2010 with a winner’s prize of 10-million gold was the goal of over 250 archers this year vying for exclusive monthly seats and automatic entry into this event.
Tensions were higher then usual for the 24 archers assembled this Saturday night with the title "December's Best Archer", one million in gold at stake, and an engraved bow marking the event.
But for many this event was their last chance for the automatic bid to contend for the Grand Champion of 2009. Many of those assembled were near-winners during this past year with maybe just one errant shot, one misaligned arrow feather, or one gust on mistimed wind keeping them from joining an elusive extraordinary group of archers.
Sign-ups were held and Toni Fierce congratulated all those present and thanked all her assistants necessary to run this monthly event, members of the Misfits of Society Guild, one of Baja's oldest and most active guilds. For this night’s event, food and spirits were provided, by someone not known to but those who provided the spirits, hot rum from a few bottles of The Admirals Hearty Rum calmed many nerves on this chilly eve.
The 1st round began and Jonah was perfect with 3 bulls-eyes and sat down, but Aftermath came up short quickly and was the night’s 1st one out and received the consolation prize of 50k in gold. Three other archers failed in this round with Fyiera Fyre, a M!S member, just missing the mark with a 62. Lil Debi posted the night’s 1st Robin hood (RH) and the round ended. But perhaps the round didn't end? Usually the entry list is closed when the 1st round ends but in the spirit of the holidays and with Christmas Spirit in her heart Toni held the event at bay while one latecomer announced he was on his way. As the minutes clicked away, how long would this crowd wait before rumblings would force the event to continue, but luckily Fyiera Fyre entertained the crowd with a festive dance and then Wrath and Tsukiko showed. Wrath quickly posted a 200 and the 2nd round began.
On a side note, Nicholas the Old was spotted briefly at the stable area but soon left. Hmmn. Maybe he was just running to the provisioner for the "loaf of bread", but I don't believe there is a provisioner at the Fairgrounds. Fern was not seen. Good Luck, NICK.
The 2nd round began and Lance, Chango, and Isabella posted robin-hoods (RHs) although we saw the surprise exit of Lil Debi, a 1st round RH shooter, Bucko, a crowd favorite since his finish of 2nd just a few months ago and a few others, but 16 shooters were still in the hunt.
The 3rd round where 150 points and only perfection would move you to the next round found Lance shooting his 2nd in a row 200 (would he be the one?) and Maleki shooting a RH (warming up?). Seven more shooters fell aside with Vengeance shooting 2 shots before his bow broke and he sat down in frustration.
This brought us to the 4th round, usually the champion round if you could just shoot that elusive RH with 2 other bulls-eyes and score 200 but this year’s event would not end as Lance, Devin, Tazz, and Aeowyn were perfect but just couldn't split that arrow!!
A five-shot shoot-off, one at a time, was announced by Toni with the highest score earning the crown and tensions soared. Lance had what was probably his worst round of the night with a score of 200 while Devin, a member of M!S shot a 260!! A robin hood and an inner ring shot the LEADER, Tazz, a 170. Aeowyn was GONE!! Where was Aeowyn? To have come this close, this far? Toni called and called but, alas, he was nowhere to be found.
Maleki, a M!S faction member was next up and shot a 300 with four bulls-eyes and a RH. Tsukiko was next up and finished the night with a score of 250.
Congratulations to Maleki, the 2nd M!S member to earn a seat in the champions shoot-off. He was awarded the last seat of the monthly winners, a unique engraved bow and the one million gold prize.
We will start the year over with the January shoot-off for 2010 on Saturday, January 30th at 8:30 p.m. Pacific (9:30 Mountain, 10:30 Central, 11:30 Eastern). M!S invites all archers and citizens of the land to come and compete, or to cheer-on the competitors!
