New Tool: Best Battle Pet Tool

Greetings, Tamers!

UOCraft.com (home of the Pet Power Calculator) presents a new taming tool to help you pick the best pet for your next monster brawl: the Best Battle Pet Tool!

This tool compares the monster's lowest 2 resists to each pet's highest two damage output types. When a match is found, it then looks at the monster's highest damage output type and compares it to the pet's lowest 2 resists. If a pet is strong in damage output but weak against the monster's damage, it is eliminated.

The result is a list of pets that have a good matchup in damage output versus the monster's vulnerabilities, and no major weakness in terms of resist against the monster's damage type.

Of course, there are many other variables when choosing a pet for battle, such as: will you be hunting solo or with a group? Does your pet need to act as a meat shield as opposed to a damage dealer, or do you have another meat shield coming along? Can you feasibly stand close enough to a lower-hit-point pet to keep it healed throughout the battle?

As such, just because a pet makes the Best Battle Pet list doesn't mean it's the best pet in every situation. I leave the more subtle variables up to you, the Animal Whisperer.

What the Best Battle Pet list does do, however, is put you in the right ballpark for experimentation with different pet options when your goal is to deal out damage. It's a lot more creative than grabbing Frank the Tank every time you go out, and particularly when hunting in groups with other tamers, can be a lot more effective.

This can also free up opportunities to take out combinations of pets so that, for example, you can have a magic caster along with a melee damage pet, or a poisoning pet to go with the melee damage, etc.

Try it out! You might just find some new favorite pets!

Note: If you find a pet or monster that you'd like to see listed in the tool, contact me (Kitiara) here, or via my contact info listed on the Contact link on the left side of UOCraft.com. You can view the list of which pets are available at the bottom of the results page after submitting your monster choice.

Note - I'm still adding monsters. Got most of the renowned mini-champs from SA in there, and the major peerless.

Update: got the champs in there (Ilsh/Fel/SA).

Please feel free to post other monsters you'd like to see included.

I've also been asked if the reverse tool will be available (pick a pet, and it lists the best monsters to fight). The answer: maybe someday. But not today :)

Monsters mentioned above are in, and I added the vice-versa feature (pick a pet, the tool outputs monsters that are good to fight with that pet).

Please send requests for additional pets/monsters if there are any missing that you'd like to see. Thanks!

I'm debating on making the criteria more strict - like looking only at the monster's and pet's best damage/weakest resist.

I feel like I'm getting too many results, but I never quite realized just how little thought seems to have been put into the various pet/monster resists when they were designed. *meh*

It seems, after spending so many hours looking at these numbers, that in more recent years, the attention has been paid to monster special moves as a way to put tamers to a decision, instead of resist/damage output matchups (which would seem most obvious to me? But what do I know!)

One of the easiest places to start might be what would be the best hyriu killer. Stat for stat the cu side(maybe paired with an ice worm?) or the white wyrm(pair of ice worms?). If you can get that "stat-ed out" in a spreadsheet of some kind I think you might see a plan form on the subject of pet vs mobs power considerations.

This is a daunting task and I for one feel style and macros and templates have alot to do with it as well. You might end up writing a "total potential" tool and the current sampires might be depressed when its done!

Something seems off with the monsters your tool is selecting. It is listing pets for a damage type they are incapable of dealing. For instance, I looked at Pixie [Renowned] (listed as vulnerable to fire and energy), the following creatures were given that only deal Physical Damage (but are listed as both Physical AND Energy):
Dragon
Frenzied Ostard
Greater Dragon
High Plains Boura
Hiryu
Lesser Hiryu
Based on your description as to what it looks for, it sounds like the magic casting abilities are not factored in. So it does not make sense as to why these would show up on the list. This may solve the issue of "too many results".

Fixed a bug whereby pets with only one damage type were erroneously assigned a second.

Now, pets with 2 damage types should properly show both, and pets with only 1 damage type should only show one.

Example - Pixie Renowned
vulnerable to energy damage, fire damage

-- Only pets that do energy or fire damage should show:

Pet Damage Type
Bake Kitsune physical, energy
Cu Sidhe energy, cold
Dread War Horse physical, energy
Ki-Rin physical, energy
Nightmare physical, fire
Reptalon energy, poison
Rune Beetle energy, physical
Unicorn physical, energy
