You're already here.... but, to be fair, there are others and google is your friend... But welcome to UO and Stratics! Since you're in California, might I suggest starting chars on Pacific, Sonoma, or Baja for best ping times, or Atlantic for the most company...

As a new player to the game, tutorials can be very helpfull whether they may provide advice in how to better raise a skill or what gear might be more helpfull for what template.

I could not understand whether you are using the trial version or the full one. Should it be the trial one, keep in mind that this is quite limited as to what can be done in the game as in comparison to the full one.

Stratics has a Forum section pointed at the professions one can entertain in UO, All profession Forums have a number of sticky threads which usually are FAQs or other threads with informations related to the professions discussed in that given Forum as well as links to other pages with tutorias, essays and such.

Ultima Online is a very very vast game, personally, I think much deeper than most of the other games out there which means that before becoming familiar with the many and varied aspects of the game it will take some time. I would focus initially on developing the character like on training up skills, choose the best combination of skills that better fits your liking and collect gold which will help you out to buy better gear and weapons for your character.

Whatever Shard you pick to play, try to be well informed of the Event Moderators activities on your shard and to participate in them as much as you can. The reason for this, is that most often these activities are for all level players, not necessarily only advanced characters and at the end of the Event some items are given out by the Moderators. These items are considered "rares" and players collect them. This means that you might be able to sell them to other players for a good amount of in game gold which will help you expedite your outfitting with better gear and weapons.
The Event Moderators Forums are listed here http://stratics.com/community/categories/event-moderators-discussion-forum.460/

Also, the Chat General Channel on the shard you picked to play can be also a good means to ask for help and informations from other players.

Welcome to Ultima Online and I hope you will enjoy playing the game as most of us do.

Also, use chat system in game to ask questions or just announce yourself as a new player looking for a few pointers. There are many very kind people who will go out of their way to help you. Consider Atlantic as a temporary starting shard due to high population there, you will be able to get most help.

I'll second the recommendations for the UO Stratics main site and UOGuide. And FYI, UOForums is UO's other big forum community. I'll also second the shard recommendations above. Be aware that many of those who want a crowded, lively experience have consolidated on Atlantic over the years. Elsewhere, you will often find yourself relying on your own good wits for entertainment. Both styles of play has fans.

UO Ultimate Codex is one of the biggest, most awesome informational sites produced in recent years.

UO Travelogues is probably one of the best (if unsung) websites and guides to UO ever composed. Like many old hands, the site's owner was a bit soured on UO by the time he wrote his final articles--a fact that has made me reluctant to keep pointing newbies toward his site. But, you can logically overlook the salt in his wounds based on the fact that it took him more years to get sick of UO than most MMOs last--and here you are on your very first day. ;)

If you like all of those retro-style RPGs that you see on Steam and other pro-indie websites and platforms (I'm referring to everything from simple roguelikes to big whopping adventures like Avernum), then you should download the Classic Client. If this is your style, then you have likely stumbled upon an adventure like no other, which will draw you in for years to come. (And if you like old games, UO also has a lot of history behind it.)

If you like modern-style RPGs like Linkrealms, Torchlight, Path of Exile and Diablo, then you should download the Enhanced Client. Graphically speaking, this newer client is far less impressive than other isometric games on the market. Its user interface, on the other hand (especially when coupled with the much-beloved Pinco's Mod), is far more impressive than probably any RPG out there.

A cynic would say you're 10 years late to the party (UO is 15 years old, but subscribers peaked in 2003 at 250,000). Because of its age and sandbox game play, UO is capable of making an awful first impression. But people who stick around beyond that first impression have always, 100 percent of the time, had their minds blown by the depth of content (15 years worth) and ways to interact with that content. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that UO is a sandbox MMORPG. Unlike games like World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings Online and Champions Online, UO does not direct you toward your next step. The devs have given us one of the biggest, most toy-filled sandboxes ever created. You're responsible for building your sand castle and everything in it. You're responsible for the richness of your play experience. Players who've become bored have tacked several years onto their subscriptions by continuing to redefine their "purpose" and goals within the game; by forging their own paths, and forging a path alongside their guildmates.

Edit: After you become established on a shard, ask here or elsewhere about any community sites your shard might have.

Also Be very careful about websites you go to some are legal and some are Illegal to go to. Ones being posted here are the ones that are legal ok to go to. Illegal ones are not allowed to be posted they will be removed, and there is books being layed out in UO with websites in the game steer clear of those books those are illegal sites. Same with general chat see someone posting websites also illegal.
If your not sure of a website private message a mod, or mesanna here they will let you know if there ok.
and welcome to UO.

I would not worry too much about studying the game at this point. The best thing to do is to announce what shard you are going to create your player on. Then before creating the character, decide what might interest you. In general, do you want to craft things, fight things, do you want to use magic a lot, or do you like to get right in there swinging your weapon? Do you want to fight monsters or does player to player combat appeal? Though not critical anymore, it helps to know these things in general because you start the game with a character that you can endow with the starting skills you will be needing. Then ask for advice or read up on character creation. Don't worry if you don't get it right as nothing is critical.

There will be many people who will be willing to help you a lot. Be your own person. Seek out people who share your interests. Remember it is your game and you can define which way you want to play. Stay true to your interests, as you will be very surprised as to what those might be as situations pop up. If you enjoy the development of a character to the endgame, you can take years getting there and have fun all the way. If you want to get to the end game right away, you can do that too by associating with generous people. You can find a lot of action this way too.

Have fun....

Hello and welcome to UO!

Also don't worry about what skills you choose to start off with. You can change these around at anytime. Your allowed 6 chars (expandable to 7) per shard. This is great as it means you can have a collection of different chars all with various skill sets. Choose a shard, make a character and your pretty much set :)

I would suggest starting out on Atlantic because of the large playerbase. Decent house spots are still easy to find.

If you do decide to come to Atlantic send me a PM or reply here and I will give you a very nice house and set you up with everyting you need

id recommend starting a nice dexxer template. suit and weapons are not as hard to equip as opposed to making a mage, which gets pretty pricey. get someone to tame u a blue beetle which is a decent mount and can double as storage

Welcome to UO. I take it you are downloading the trial account so you will be limited in some of the things you can do. If you are on the West coast you will have a lot less lag if you pick a West Coast Server, Pacific has the most players on it (West Coast), all other West Coast Shards have thier peak times when players are around. If you want lots of players then Atlantic would be the Shard you want but you may have a lot of lag, not good for a new player. Let us know which shard you might like to start on and I am sure there are people here that will help you to get started.

First off Welcome honey,
Sense you are only doing a 2 week trial and are very new to us might I suguest picking a few shards and do a walk through of the major places... get a feel for the shards many have given you a few choices.. try them all. There is no hurry if your account is not a trial one to get a house or anything else... Yes Atalantic is a full steam shard but also can be too fast paced for a new beginner... Dont be afraid to try any shard... Chesapeak, Catskills, Pacific, are some of the more active but all shards have a working population..
Dont be afraid to try... talk to players, ask questions, dont be surprised if yoru over welmed by generous players ready to help you learn..
But most of all HAVE FUN...

Welcome to UO.

I am a 6 year UO vet. I have played many of the other online games, but I always come back to UO.
The character development is very unique and most developed than any other game. This also means it can get complicated.
I play on Pacific Shard and have a good group of friends that I play with regularly.
If you decide to make a character on Pacific shard, let me know and I'll be more than happy to show you around.

It is really nice to see new faces to the game.

Welcome.
