New to OSI, familiar with UO

Hey guys, good to finally be here. I've played UO Free Shards, but never OSI. After the mess that was Darkfall, I decided enough is enough I'm going to Siege Perilous. I have a few questions if anyone can help me out. I've read the forums for the last couple days getting all the information I could, but still have a few questions, specific to Siege Perilous.

1. About the no rune book thing. Does this make solo'ing most areas a real pain? I know there are moon gates, but I don't think I've ever had to use one :). Would getting magery up to 52ish be wise if I want to explore? Also, with no rune books, can I only Mark one location at a time?

2. This is about the classes. I've been reading great things about the Sampire, but how likely is it that I will get to be one within the first 6 months? This goes beyond just a Sampire. I guess what I am asking is, without the insurance, will I need to be a multi-millionaire before I can risk getting all the good equipment to get skills like Necro up to 99? Is this the same with most builds as they are equipment specific?

3. This goes along with number two. I've been trying to find good builds for any class that doesn't require a huge equipment cost, does anyone have any recommendations?

Any help would be appreciated. Sorry if I rambled, long day.

Runebooks are allowed on Siege, they are even blessed. You can only gate though. No recall or sacred journy. I will leave the template talk to others.

1. There are runebooks however there is no recall. If your magery is high enough you can cast gate travel and get around that way.

2. Sampire is more of a prodo shard thing because it requires a lot of gear to be really successful. Not all builds are so item dependent.

3. Can you tell me a little more about what you enjoy doing? I would not choose a build based on equipment cost alone. Do you want to be a support character or solo? Caster or melee or archer?

Hey guys, thanks for all the help so far I really appreciate it.

Looking to melee, and will usually be solo, though I have two other buddies I will eventually be joining with.

I'll leave the template stuff to those more knowledgeable than me. I can say, however, that without insurance, you will need the ability to make gold in order to replace items lost... OR a crafter with imbuing. Most of us run more than one account. Depending on your playstyle, typically, a player will have a pvp character, a moneymaker/farmer type character [usually a tamer] and or/a crafter. I wouldn't adivise starting these all at once.

My best suggestion would be to build your main character first and join a guild that fits your playstyle. Guildmates often rely on each other and crafters of the shard for meeting their equipment needs. :)

Maybe a bushido dexxer. Something like

110 Anatomy
120 Bushido
120 Parry
120 Swordsmanship
120 Tactics
100 Healing

Start shearing sheep. Come back in two weeks with a metric half ton of wool and I'll let you know what to do next.

Just kidding, sort of.

Seek ye Shalimar. After you find her, you will have some training supplies and quite a bit more knowledge of EA's UO and SP in particular.

The sampire is a great template, but it's very item dependent. That said, it's probably viable with imbuing.

Don't worry about the necro equipment, because (at least formerly) you can get to 99 necro with items, cast vampire, then drop all the items in a chest in your house, and you'll stay a vampire until you die or cast it again. It'll be expensive to get the equipment, but you won't lose it.

Pure mage templates are always viable - though it seems most are using a parry-mage template these days.

Archer, dexer, necro, tamer, bard templates are also all viable and not terribly item dependent. The item dependency usually comes from trying to cram too many skills on a template - a hybrid. Any relatively pure template has no such problems.

I recommend training up a crafter with imbuing right away. Either that, or befriend one or two. You'll need the imbued items a lot.

Using scrolls or magic enhancing items, you can cast gates at a lower level. Not sure if that help. It could free up some critical skill points

This no longer works, you will need to maintain 99necro or you will lose form.

Maybe try a wammy to begin with, it will cost less resources to get the required necromancy and SS and is just as effective.

Wammy, is pretty much the same as sampire;

120swords
120parry
120SS
120bush
60necro
60chiv
100anatomy

Actually scratch that...you would need regs to use the template :)

Ahh, ok. I was afraid of that. I haven't used my ATL sampire in a very long time.

Can't you use LRC with that template? It's easy to imbue a all 70's, 100 LRC suit with 6 SR and 6 MR, which would work.
