New Tamer - need some advice...

Howdy - I am new to taming and have received some great advice so far from the community - thank you.

I opted for the advanced character token so I have 85ish across the taming skills. I pulled over some other skills from stones and am ready to get myself a hunting companion. It has been recommended that a Bake Kitsune would be a good choice. Now here is the issue I am having... the Bake will attack this was not news so I did some reading and found that it is a good idea to send a pet in to tank and lower the bake's HP to almost nothing. It was suggested that a gaman might be able to do the trick and since they are all around the Kitsune Woods this was an easy choice. I was able to keep the gaman healed for the most part, but I am having trouble with keeping track with it all. Of course this is taming so I should get use to it, but I want to know if I am going about it the right way? Are there better way to tame my first Bake Kitsune? My thought is that once I have one I will be able to train up a bit and then worry about getting a better one and bigger and better pets. Is there a better pet to use for tanking this first one? Am I setting my sights too high to start off? Should I be buying my first in an effort to train up?

If you are a mage you can just make a tame last target macro and spam invis over and over on taming process,they are pretty dumb on that regard and you can easily have all taming atempts you want without even agroing the bake(they seldom reveal,just invis again...) .Or if they polymoprh into a human you can tame them without any effort and youl have a tamed humanoid following you for a bit,kinda funny.Bakes got a prety broad stat range but not being very picky they are used because of their potential huge fire resist and great hp bonus over mares,so id say if you find one with 90 fire resist and 340+ hp more your set.

Doh - I should have kept that 70 magery and not put it on a stone fragment! I can pull it back off. I have 100 hiding on a fragment I could pull over... would this work as well?

you can also tame 2-3 Gaman and have all of them attack the Kit. Ignore the Gaman's health and just start taming away.

Woo Hoo - I got my first kit thanks to a peacer named Gividup! I tried the multiple Gaman attacking, but the argo was too high for taming. I was able to tame a second kit for Gividup.

Thanks for the advice - I will have to try a few more tomorrow.

Try to put on some taming jewelry ... that will increase your chance on successfully taming one.

Hiding will no work, if you have ninja then i suppose you could use smoke bombs for the first attempt but then theres a 12second timer, I would definatly recomend putting back magery for your actual taming. Then when you have the pets you recquire you can remove magery for whatever other skill(you dent neccessarily need eval or med)

I entered my freshly tamed Kit and am told it is a 2.8 rating. I am assuming htis will go up with training, but but how much? With th einfo I have found so far this is rather low if I am wanting a top dog (or fox in this case).

I will most likely keep this kit for a while, but what should I be looking for. Goodoljoe mentioned that 90% fire and 340+ HP was a keeper. I am really close to that so what do you all think?

I would throw it in the nearest trash receptical!

But thats because my kit has 350hp 425ish mana Low dex 125

and all resists are 1 or 2 from max i think(cant check im at work)

For a starter kit, look for mid-high hp

near max mana

And high Phys and fire.

For most mobs that will make him pretty survivable and able to dish out huge damage.

Keep farming. You'll find a better one. I found a 4.2 kit before I went to bed one night after about 20 mins of farming... the next morning before work after farming about 20-30 mins I found a 4.1 bake.

Just gotta keep at it. A 2.8 isn't going to train up to be something amazing... especially if it's got crappy resists. It'll die too fast to be of any use.

I agree with the continue to look advice. As your first taming project the continued taming will get you trained up. Kits are a friendlier version of what you'll be taming in the near future so it's best to peak your learning curve on them and get a good one while your at it.

I just wanted to say thanks again for the advice. I spent a few hours yesterday and again today taming kits. I have all but mastered the lead taming technique and I have been using my non-keepers as tanks to learn that technique as well.. I have tamed a few dozen now and have to say I am having a blast learning the ropes and training up. The highest I have tamed is a 3.4. I have been placing the highest in the stable to start the bonding process and I have been swapping them out as I go.

It's great isn't it? There's a lot of techniques you can use, just try things out and go with what feels comfortable. For example, when I was taming drakes for the zoo turn in I would run up to the drake with invis pre-cast and wait till it targetted me then invis right away, then hit my taming macro to tame it. After you have started taming, pre cast invis again and be ready to target yourself if needed. Monsters are on 10 second agro timer, so if you get to where you know when their timer will hit, you can use that space of non-agro time to tame (this is very useful for pets that agro, but are easy tames). When you are speed taming, you want to be as fast as possible, so beating down the mob is a waste of time.

I use my mare for farming kits... kills them faster since it's already trained up. The faster I can farm the faster I can find a better one =)

Well until I reach 100 lore I need to tame the poor creature before I can determine if it is a keeper or not. Of course I assume I could find a +X Animal Lore something and save myself this trouble. I don't know why I never played with taming in the past, but it is like a whole new game for me.

Oh... well, definately get your lore high enough that you can lore untamed creatures. Makes farming a LOT easier and faster. I can cycle through lots of bakes as opposed to tame, kill, tame, kill etc etc..

If the bake's HPs aren't higher than 330 I don't even bother really looking at resists. I prefer to have high HP/resist bakes.
