Hi Black Tower!

Welcome to the Stratics community.

I think the following sums this up the best:

Cast spells that deal offensive damage to your target. The general idea is to get your target to 0 hitpoints. Some spells do more damage than others.

Hope this helps friend - good luck on your adventures!

The first thing you want to focus on is fortifying yourself against your aggressor's attacks. How's your defense chance increase and what are you using for defense?

First, you will need 45 dci on your suit, at minimum - 70 dci, if you want to counteract the effects of hit lower defense. Second, I'd recommend scrolling to 120 magery, using an imbued -20 SC mage weapon (possibly with hit lower attack property), and then wearing skill increasing jewels to bring yourself back up to 120 magery (e.g., crystalline ring, imbued jewels, alchemist tally). Alternately, if you do not want to use a mage weapon, invest 120 skill in wrestling. Or, if you can manage to bring your dex to 80, you could also go 120 parry and use a shield.

These changes will cause you to be hit less often, which will (a) reduce the damage you take and (b) reduce your casting interruptions.

Once you sort out your defense chance as above, summon demon, have it guard and follow you. Pre cast explosion, find target, drop explosion followed by a quick curse/flamestrike and follow this up with an ebolt. As soon as your curse lands the demon starts attacking/casting..

If your quick and catch them off guard you can often get the flamestrike off unchallenged and if you can get the ebolt off uninterupted, there's a good chance that you'll have one dead dexxer on your hands.

Demons do insane damage to a cursed target so as a newbie mage you should try and always have one following you around guarding you to help fend off dexxers :)

But first and foremost you must sort out your defense chance as discussed above or you will never last any longer than 2 seconds against a dexxer.

Actually your looking to get them to -1 hp. 0 hit points and they are still alive, redlined but alive :)

Ive heard of people using anatomy on a mage, ive never done this myself, and dont really know why or how its useful on a mage.
Anyone know about this??

Here's some tips..

*Hope he doesn't run off-screen as soon as you hit him with Curse.

Other than that it's a piece of cake.

Anatomy + evaluating intelligence can be used to replace wrestling. At 120 eval and 100 anatomy, you have 120 effective defensive skill. The upside is that you only spend 220 skill points for 120 eval/100 anat, whereas you'd spend 240 skill points for 120 eval/120 wrestling. The downside is that you can't use wrestling specials: disarm and stun.

Defensive Skill=(eval+anat+20)/2

Got a questions on suggestions for OP.

Do you need a weap in hand to use trigger any DCI you have?
It seems implied that it consders attackers combat skill vs defenders combat skill.

If I carry a spellbook and cannot take wrestling/anat/eval, does my DCI never trigger except as 0% wrestling?

Ack, that sucks if true (seems to be true).

The only combat related skil lI have is magery, so would I need to get a mage weap to be able to at least use my magery skill for computation of DCI?

As it stands, I can only keep 95.0 in magery (for 100% chance of invis), so should I just forget altogether about DCI? Note: this is a PVM char, so PVP damage mitigation really doesn't concern me.

The thing about defense on a mage is that you need something to trigger the dci as you said, either wrestling/anat & eval/ mage weapon or a weapon skill (such as fencing/swords/mace/archery) In regards to your 0% wrestling that depends on your race. If you are human you have 20 skill in all skills so you will have defense, although it is so low it is barely noticable. It is the same as occasionally you will parry randomly during a fight, whether with a mage weapon or a shield. You have that low skill in everything so there is always a chance. For pvm i always suggest anat/eval due to slayer books however with the tight templates now you can be ok with books and carry a staff of the magi/ mage weapon of some sort for times when you are running threw some heavy hitting spawn. A mage weapon gives the weilder defensive evasion = to magery. In your case with a staff of magi being a -0 mage weapon, you will have 95 "mace" weapon skill. This works for both triggering defense and triggering offense. Many mages now use there mage weapons (planeswords ;/ ) in between spells for a chance at a hit, this is free damage and helps to interupt casting.
The best example i can think of right now is on the way to navery. There is that hallway packed with spiders, a blood elemental and such. running threw that spawn with a book in your hand you will get pounded on by the monsters. Put a staff of the magi in your hand and you will get hit still, but much less then before, possibly not at all if you have high dci and 120 magery. Then once you get into the navery cave, switch to your spider slayer book and have at it. In a situation such as navery, to have points in a weapon skill/defensive skill would be a waste usually since you can just sit back and cast. In a heavy mob of harder hitting, higher level monsters a mage weapon may prove extremely useful.

defense on a mage has to be considered in a few ways, chiefly regarding pvm. 9 out of 10 pvp mage hate to go into protection to cast. Pvm mages tend to rely heavily upon this spell to cast invis's and such while being hit/ casted on. If this is your case, and you run protection frequently then i wouldnt worry about defense on your mage too much. In a pvp/pk situation u must realize that a mage without a mage weapon, or defense will get hit 100% of the time, where 120 weapon against 120 weapon you will get hit 50% of the time (before dci/hci are factored in)

I still highly suggest a staff of magi in the bag, but protection is a defensive counter some mages prefer, just remember it drops casting speed to 0, lowers your phyical resist and drops resist spells down, so carry some orange petals/cure potions and possibly a trap box.

Thanks SO much for your detailed and informative reply!!!!

So, to recap:

I do need to equip a mage weapon to use DCI in practical terms as I have no wrestle/combat skills. I'm an elf so not even 20 skill! Otherwise, I'm defending with 0% skill.

Basically, jsut equip the weapon when I'm getting a beat-down or running through heavy-spawn areas...and maybe while taming too! With good DCI, maybe 40ish, I should do even better than without having DCI, provided I am equipping a mage weap (to take advantage of the 95 combat skill).
