New player wants answers

Hello. I'm a new player to UO. I just got done with my 14 day free trial and started my regular subscription. I really like the game so far. I have played many MMORPGs in the past but decided to try this one because I heard it was the best for player housing and pretty good for crafting as well, which is what I like the most. I also do a lot of PvMing, but not much of a PvPer. I have a few questions please if you don't mind.

Ok, here are my questions:

1) Is this the main forum for the game? And if so, am I in the right place to be asking these questions?

2) Where is the auction house and how do I access it?

3) How do I know who is all online and how do I communicate with them? There is this one guy who helped me a little. He found me in New Haven and brought me to his house and made me some armor and gave me a mage and full rune book. I think his chars are Dadelous and Croak, want to thank him again and ask him for some advice.

4) Did I choose the right server? I choose Great Lakes because I live near one of the great lakes. LOL I wanted a server that was close to me for good connection and one where most of the people are in the same time zone I am or at least close. Also, wanted a server that was mediumly populated.

5) I have a house placement tool but can't find any place to place a house. What's the trick to getting one?

6) I have a full bank for of stuff, probably crap, I don't understand what to keep and what to sell or throw on the ground.

7) I have made one character so far. From my older MMORGs I like having pets, so I took taming and I like magic, so I took that. I like the fact that you don't have to adhere to a strict template and can be flexible and pick and choose your own skills and such. So far I have 100 med, 100 focus, 90 magery, 90 animal lore, 90 eval, 75 resist, 65 taming, 65 vet, 10 dex, 90 str and 125 int. Eventually want those skills all up to 100 I guess and maybe lower my int some for more str. I started with 50 taming but its going really slow. Should I paralyze aggressive creatures to tame them or should I take up music and peace to peace them? If I do I will probably need to drop eval and med maybe.

Hey welcome to UO! Let me try to answer your questions.

1. Yes, these are the main forums for UO. We used to have official forums years ago, but they eventually shut down when we lost our Volunteer Programs due to greedy lawsuits.

2. There is no auction house. Players can place vendors in their home that act as little shops. You can run around and search vendors. The closest thing to an auction house now is the city of Luna which is surrounded by player vendors, as well as Zento. They are adding a vendor search feature soon to the game which will act like an auction house by tying all vendors in the game to a central interface! =]

3. Unfortunately UO does not have a friends list and there is no way to tell who is online unless you are in a guild and only for fellow guild members. Many UO players stay in touch through the forums, in-game chat channels, ICQ, AIM, Skype, or other messenger programs.

4. Great Lakes is a decent populated server so yes you made a decent choice. Remember though, if you want to be around more people and a vibrant marketplace, the only choice though is Atlantic. =D

5. Houses have to be place on open spaces with no obstructions...even something as small as a rock, a bush or a mushroom WILL block house placement. Most shards don't have big spots open, at least those with medium to hey populations, but you should be able to find 7x7 or slightly bigger out in an isolated corner of the woods somewhere.

6. Um well, you'll learn what is crap and what is not over time lol. UO has a very complicated item system and it takes getting used to.

7. You don't need music skills to be a successful tamer and paralyzing monsters to tame is generally not a go idea because it reduces the final stats when you finally do tame them. I would go with magery based skills and heavy armor when going to tame dragons and nightmares and other vicious beasts. =] Most monsters don't very fast so thr trick is to start taming them and try to stay at max taming range at all times [about 2-3 tiles] so they don't kill you.

1. As good a place as any.

2. UO does not have an auction house. They have Player vendors. However, they are adding Vendor Search Kiosks soon(tm).

3. You can communicate with others by entering into 'General' chat. If you are using the classic client, the chat button is at the top of the screen.

4. Great Lakes is fine.

5. Look for empty house locations in Malas or on some of the larger islands. Ter-Mur will get you a 15 x 15 if you are upgraded to Stygian Abyss.

6. Everyone has useless crap. Keep it until you learn more about the game.

7. It is far easier to Tame by Honoring yourself first. However, you need to build your honor first by honoring critters before you kill them. Bard Peace and Mage Paralyze will get you dead! Dead I say! Also, you will eventually be able to raise some skills to 120 after you used skill power scrolls.

You can go past 100 in a skill?!?

Couple more questions if you don't mind. Um, do I have the latest expansion? I'm using the Enhanced Client with build 4.0.34.0 (Stygian Abyss) I belive.

Are there any MODs or 3rd party apps that I should be aware of?

How do I repair my stuff?

You have the latest expansion yes, which is Stygian Abyss. However you don't have High Seas which is like a mini expansion. It adds some features but it's not really needed till you are more adjusted to the game.

Mods are not legal for the classic client, but the enhanced client does support mods. One of the most popular mods for the Enhanced Client is the PINCO's UI. You can read all about it and get more info in the Enhanced Client sub-forum.

If in the future you find yourself using the Classic Client, there is a useful, and LEGAL 3rd party app for it called UOAssist, which basically converts a lot of actions to simple hotkeys [www.tugsoft.com] though it is a one time fee of $10 to buy it.

But if you're good with the EC you'll find you don't need it and it's a more convenient client to play on.

5) Try to place a small 7x7 first if that place cancle it and try a bigger house or move the 7x7 around so you see what it is that block placement

7) You carry alot of skills the max cap is 720 skill points (most tamers do not carry focus or resist spells on their template)
Resist spells only help vs curses not against direct dmg
There are powerscrolls that raise your skill past 100 (105,110,115,120) you get these scrolls from champion spawns in felucca but it is probably easier to buy them from another player
The magery spell protection stop spells from fizzel when u take dmg trying to cast but slow down your casting speed
If you carry a bow/xbow but no arrows your taming attempt will not break even if you stand next to the agressiv pet you try to tame ( the bow should be spell channeling) I use Nox rangers heavy xbow for this it is very cheap and have no casting penalty and
+ poison resist

I finally figured out how to repair an item, bought a repair deed off of a player vendor but I lost durability. So, I should only repair when I'm near 1?

Pretty much, I'd say around ~10-20~/max durability when you repair an item, if the item is too low, repairing can fail completely and the item loses 1 max dura- per fail as well.

I finally figured out how to repair an item, bought a repair deed off of a player vendor but I lost durability. So, I should only repair when I'm near 1?

There is a higher chance for failure when you are close to 1 durability and try to repair an item. However, there is an item called Powder of Fortification that you can acquire from players, or by rewards from filing certain Blacksmith Bulk Order Deeds. You can 'repair' lost durability up to a max of 255. You get them from NPC-Blacksmiths. About a 100k gold per can of 10 charges on some Shards. This is usually worth it if you have higher 'level' magic armor. Each charge adds 10 durability.

Also, player Blacksmiths can repair items directly, but they will also suffer durability loss when repairing most of the time. If your item was Imbued (has a blue 'imbued' tag on the item, it cannot be Fortified with Powder, but can be repaired with the usual loss in durability.

2) Great Lakes DOES have an auction house: Majestic Oaks Auctions. Been around a very long time and has weekly auctions every Thursday at 8pm Central, gates available from Luna bank. Physically, MOA is located SW of Vesper next to the Bucc's teleport arch.

3) There is Global Chat, the General channel is the most active on GL...but be prepared for a lot of useless trash talk. How you access chat depends on how which client you use.

4) GL is a good server, though it isn't located near the lakes. What kind of experience are you looking for? RP? PvM?

5) There are some good house spots on GL, but you have to have enough money in your bank (several hundred thousand) and you will need to look somewhat far away from any cities.

6) Whats worthless to some is good to others. It will take a while to learn what's valuable to you.

erm if they make the lower levels of a new dungeon ''new player freindly'' why not????.....why should new players not have the chance of the new items....i think even the devs have agreed to allow most of vet rewards to be used by anyone....championed by me !!...because that put new players off too....so plz plz plz donr try to put new players off doing the latest arc!! or we will have negative effect on our game....note...i say our game and NOT YOUR GAME!! with no new players comoming in and old players leaving....mmmm no brainer really aint it mr banksitter...
