Hi all. So I played UO way back in errr 96? (I didn't do anything exceptional other than enjoy myself and make a few friends that made the time online that much more enjoyable) I think I might be back for nostalgia... everyone always seems on the go these days in MMO's and I seem to remember a more leisurely pace in days long since past.

Anyways, I will be checking out the various guides and stickies before I bombard you all with too many questions, but there was one I was hoping to get help with as I get underway:

If I wanted to play some type of.. I don't know... "Ranger" character, what would you all suggest for skills? I am not too awfully concerned with an "ultimate build" although I do enjoy having strong characters. I would like to adventure across the lands and be able to be as self sufficient as possible, exploring dungeons and stopping here and there in local towns to make new friends. I know that I would like to wield a sword, and possible some type of magic, but other than that I am open to suggestions.

Hehe, I have been reading a Song of Ice and Fire and feel the need for adventure! Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for reading this post and any advice you all have.

P.S. Oh and what would you all suggest for a good shard for an EST player (I would probably be playing mostly evening to late night) Mainly I am looking for a shard with a great community.

Welcome back.

For the shard i would say Atlantic. But there alot of nice communities on all shards:) . Just check out the Shard forums for it.

You mention sword and magic type of character then the first thing in my mind is a Paladin. It would look a little like:

Swords
Tactics
Resist Spells
Chivalry
Parry
Healing
Anatomy

You could leave Tactics out and take Focus instead. This way you regain Mana faster for the Paladins spells. If you don't take Focus then you might want to build your armor with extra Mana regenration in it.
You can also wield double handed sword weapons and drop Parry and take Archery instead. That way you have a close and long distance combat option. There many combination you can do. UO gives you that freedom to do what you like. If you doubt what direction to go , you can always go to a TC and set some combination you like to go for and try it all out. That way you have a idea what direction to head on your main shard.

We are here if you have more question! ( We know you do ;) )

yeah, so many possible paths.

Some more ideas:

A more magic inclined type.

Swords
Tactics
Anatomy
Magery
Evaluate Int
Healing
Meditation

Or a ranger with pets and a touch of magic
Archery
Tactics
Animal Taming
Animal Lore
Veternary
Magery or chilvary
Meditation

The newer skill, Spellweaving, also opens up a ton of potential wilderness based characters. My friend seems to enjoy spellweaver/archer.
