New player experience

So I just created a new account after a 9 year hiatus, and man is it hard... I can't even imagine how it would feel being a truly new player, but even with my basic, old school knowledge, I am incredibly lost right now.

What happened to the tutorial? Not that it was amazing, but it was something. Seriously, you just throw new players into New Haven and expect them to figure it out? I have some idea what I'm supposed to do, and it's taking me 5 minutes to kill a skeleton. I guess this is more of a rant, but I don't see how EA expects to attract new players when they have such a steep learning curve.

Iv not been threw the new player system in new haven, but I took it there was some type of pop up on screen tutorial? If not yes i imainge it would be very hard for a new player, the old new player walk threw made the bare level basics very easy to pick up on I remember.

It allways seemed to me on some level that the steep learning curve should attract some expierienced mmo players who are bored with there over simplified game of choice.
But in my time gaming, going to alot of magic the gathering tournaments, FNM events, game stores, and the rare D&D event....There are few gamers out there that are familiar with ultima online, even serious mmo players i know either havnt ever heard of it, or arent aware its still up and running. Because there are no advertisements.

I believe the new player tutorial is part of the Enhanced Client and not the Classic Client. The tutorial shows you how to move and use the interface, but does not teach a returning player anything they do not know already. I don't know of any tutorial in UO that went beyond that point. That said, in New Haven, there are tons of NPC that offer up starter quests and give you instructions on pretty much every skill new and old. Plus you will receive increased skill gain while on those quests, reaching 50 in a short time.

I think it is assumed by the developers that truly new players will be/would have been using the Enhanced Client not the Classic. You are correct that standards set by todays games can leave a new-to-UO player feeling left in the dark. That is where UO really shines though... its players. UO has always been and will always be to an extent a social game that requires one to rely on the other players for certain things.

I would point you to http://uo.stratics.com/ the Admins and editing staff have been hard at work updating and replacing outdated information. You can also check out http://www.uoguide.com for a ton of info on all the new things in UO you have missed out on.

And of course we are always happy to help you out here and on other Stratics forums.

Welcome back and Happy Holidays!

The new global chat option allso should be a big help for any new or less experienced players, allowing them to reach out to a number of people with there questions.
