New guy needs template help for SP

Hey folks,

I used to play on Siege years ago, but I'm basically a newb again now. I plan to start up on Siege again when Stygian Abyss comes out. I have a tall order: I'd like to be able to solo PvM for money/scrolls/gear AND be able to solo PvP. So far I'm thinking I'll roll a gargoyle with the following template:

THROWING (an unknown): 120
Tactics: 100
Anatomy: 100
Healing: 100
Magery: 100
Eval Int: 120
Meditation: 80

I know... no resist. Will I be able to get by without resist or will I be completely screwed without it? My hope is I'll be able to run and recover if needed. Even if I get mana drained I'd still have Throwing and Healing to finish a fight. Since I won't need ammo, I figure I'll use my Siege blessing (do they still have that?) on my throwing weapon.

Any sugestions?

P.S.- What's the word on flying? Will gargs be able to fly oer water or other obstacles?

If I were coming back right now I'd build a sampire and start killing everything for gold and experience. A sampire should be able to hold his own against anything new and give you a chance to get back into the swing of things, before learning new skills all over again. Maybe a sampire template with throwing would be something to shoot for.

Flying sounds like just another form of mounted movement, and I haven't heard about moving over water or objects yet.

Throwing sounds like is may just be an alternative to archery.

Seems to me like the throwing weapons would have to blessed, since they talk about them returning to the throwers hand.

Could you outline what a "sampire" is for me? I'm new so I don't know these terms. Could you also explain why it's good?

sampire - samurai vampire

Vampires heal each hit, samurais do the most damage so heal the most per hit

Basic temps:

melee
tactics
bushido
anat
parry
necro
chivalry

To be fair, the Peerless did kick major ass when they first came out.

But, people in UO are great at adapting and found 'ways' to solo almost everything (not quickly mind you).

I think it really says something about the possibilities in UO. That's why it's so unique.

I mean, even back in the day, tactful mages found ways to solo Ancient wyrms and stuff like that.

Why shouldn't people be able to solo if it takes more preparation, skill, resources, and time?:D

How does one become a vampire? Is it tied to a skill? Necromancy?

A sampire is a Samurai that also has at least 99 skill in Necromancy. To become a vampire you cast the spell vampiric embrace. This spell allows you to regen hit points based on the amount of melee damage that you do to your opponent. The combination is very useful because the Bushido skill allows for massive amounts of damage and the vampiric embrace keeps your hit points up. Vampiric embrace lasts until your killed and needs to be recast after your rezzed.

The only down side is the vampire's aversion to garlic. You will take damage if any spell or potion that has garlic in it is used on you.

in addition..
The other downside is -25 Fire resist I think. And some poison resist too maybe?
And you can't use potions or spells that require garlic.

Vamp form gives you 20% life leech on every hit, added stamina regen, and mana regen too.

Does that mana regen still work? I ask because I recently added Inscribe to a char with legendery necro/ss and tried making scrolls with vamp on - as I seem to remember when this skill was introduced it meant that vamp allowed a char to gain med ACTIVELY at all times - even when not meditating - however, I didn't seem to see any gains in med with or without vamp on this char. Just interested.
