Bored, I was just thinking about in-game content and musing about a few things I think would be fun at some point. Years ago, sometimes you'd be walking down the road and there'd be some huge random spawn that didn't really belong there. Anything from mongbats to liches, really (and at the time liches scared the hell out of me) would just be spawning for a while in some arbitrary location for no apparent reason. There would always be some BNN article about it, maybe some cemetary becoming suddenly overrun or mongbats breeding out of control. Whatever; it was always just enough RP to explain the spawn adequately (keep hitting random article on uoguide if you're curious). It would be cool if they'd start throwing little things like that in again, not relating to any grand story arc or anything, just random happenings in Sosaria. Maybe add imbuing regs to their drop to make it more compelling, since few people just play for fun anymore.

Also, I think it would be fun to have some sort of urban renewal story happening. Pick some random ruined locale-- Montor in ilsh, for example, or that fishing village in Ter Mur maybe-- bump up the spawn, and invite players to keep pushing the spawn back. At the same time or afterwards there could be stations for crafters to work at; they walk up to one of these locations in the city, activate their craft using the usual tool, and craft an item called "restore" over and over, which contributes to the restoration of the city like a cooperative collection. Or maybe just create co-op collection drop points for crafters to contribute parts, miners and LJs to contribute supplies, etc. And eventually, the city would be restored to the point that bankers and vendors move back in, guard zones are established, etc.

I have more thoughts on that, but its getting too long so I'll leave it. I expect the first idea is easier to implement than the second, but I'm just musing, after all.

I'm curious to see what content other people would like to see. Any ideas?

That actually sounds really fun. My only concern would be how difficult the coding is. I am not sure but I think they currently have their hands full. Of course if it wasn't to bad that would really encourage us to go places that we normally don't and would make my random wanderings around far more exciting.

I would really just like to see world events which bring people together. I'm excited about Halloween for that same reason - people doing stuff in the graveyards and in Ilshenar.

Events are nice too because they're limited time only, and thus more likely to draw people to them.

I think the second idea needs a lot of work, but I like it in principle. Like the first idea too.

Basically, I'd like to see UO have a lot happening. I'd like to see the story pick up, it seems to die for long stretches, and it seems to go on in a meaningless fashion. I'd like for us players to be able to make discoveries, and win, as opposed to just trailing along.

I would absolutely love the first idea!

Idea 2 is good too. But the first sound like manageable coding work and long time fun! :)

people like my ideas! yay!

The first would be easier than the second, definitely, and more of a long-term thing. It just seems ludicrous to me that we have this HUGE virtual world, but there's really only one STORY happening in it. In RL, it would be like the newspaper only having a front page. They used to do the first idea all the time, just dump a random spawn into a random place. It wasn't profitable, but it was FUN. Heck, maybe even EMs could do it, I dunno. Anyway, thanks for the laurels!

I've always thought that this is a place for EMs. I picture it as more of a longer term EM event, where some "Overlord" of evil decides to take some small part of Sosaria (a dungeon or area), and load the place up with MOBs. Add minor plot, some basic rewards, some collectible display stuff, and maybe a major reward item.

Remember the Brit invasion thing where there was a point system? Remember the Ophidian/Terranthan war with flags and moving front lines? UO needs a system where EMs can drop off those flag points, and set the point system for victory conditions. Anywhere, anytime.

And it can be used to expand what the EM's do.

We need more excitement in UO than "turn-ins" and "vet rewards".
Damnit!!! :D

The EMs have been doing good work, in the context allowed them. That's my take. They need more tools, and more freedom, in my opinion.

But if they were given this, you can bet your last dollar that a few players would complain because they couldn't get in their house, or they got killed while AFK, or otherwise their absolute right to heroic spec was infringed upon.

O no, don't get me wrong, I think the EMs are doing a GREAT job, especially given the resources available to them. I'm hoping they might read this thread and put whatever EM UMPH exists into getting the tools they need to do something like this.

And yes, inevitably someone will crab over it. Having worked in hospitality for many years, if there's one thing I know its that, inevitably, you can never please everyone so you shouldn't try.

Maybe that's an indication of how effectively UO mirrors RL; we even have virtual complainers that can't just suck it up that not EVERYTHING is designed to suit them. Its just a fact of life, real or virtual. Its one of the things I like about the EM program, that, for some of us, we're getting new non-epic content. I'd just like to see more of it.

Agreeing with Merion, with the new system where stuff drops randomly and we pick it up and return it somewhere, why couldn't they do that with small spawns?

People would complain, but hell they could maybe it limit it to about 50 or 60 areas where there is no housing.

When was the last large event that we all looked forward to logging in for? Not counting the mini EM events. Its been a long time. Maybe the plans they have for halloween will be exciting.

G.v.P. had a great idea in the locked thread about sheep:
This idea may seem silly, but sheep should give a chance for something useful like special cloth or something. There really isn't any worthwhile reason to shear sheep once you have money in this game, and you can't keep them in your house like livestock.
So I was thinking right off the bat of "golden fleece". And that led me to think of use for it, and then to clothing with golden trim (much like the GM Robes). And then to other colors for the trim, from other types of "fleece".

Just an idea that could be added at some point.

I seem to recall that certain spiders dropped special spider silk that could be made into the pure white cloth. Which would be a similar sort of idea.

I like the random spawn idea be nice to go adventuring for a change around tram/fel/malas and run into some spawn taking its chance to wreak havoc on quiet areas. No overpowered event type spawn though just a group of liches taking a chance or some ogres out for a bit of action.

Also a take on the idea of supplying resources to rebuild cities, another idea could be a sort of maintenance program where buildings start showing signs of decay (cracks in walls, bits of wall on the ground etc) and supplying resources (no gold) and crafters using their "repair building" option makes a visible difference.

It wouldn't be much different than the chance of recalling home and arriving next to a Frost dragon [Guardian] from a nearby treasure chest.

It would add a little suspense and excitment to the game to have the chance of running into something nasty while hunting an area your 'safe' in. :)

Be sure to include the favorite script mining, logging, and hunting spots.

Make it really common in fel around the champ spawn areas but not in the areas. Give the <bleep> waiting PKers fits. <g>
