Just recently returned to UO and I was thinking of creating an archer for PVM, so I was hoping for some advice.

The two templates that I was considering are:
Archery - 120
Anatomy - 120
Tactics - 120
Healing - 120
Chivalry - 120
Resisting spells - 120

or

120 archery
100 tactics
100 anatomy
100 ninjitsu
100 resist
100 healing
80 Chivalry

May I know which is better for PVM?I'm hoping for a relatively lost cost (to build) archer because I don't have much gold, items and the bows I'm using is whatever I pick off the ground at the banks =P.

May I also get some advice on what kind of stats should I get?

I'd suggest this template:

Archery 120
Bushido 120
Tactics 100
Anatomy 100
Healing 100
Resist 100
Chiv 80

90+ Str (depending on what you can get from jewels)
150 Dex (max, or as close to max, dex is a must for any archer)
Int- anything that's left over

This is the template I currently use, and am able to solo the biggest and baddest of the Paragons with it. I can even solo several of the Doom bosses, as I've found out the hard way.

If you're on Pacific I can give ya a couple of bows to get you started on the right foot.

May I know what will I use Bushido for? Thanks for the kind offer, but I'm on Atlantic

May I also know what are the 2 skills I can use to get my dex up?

There are 2 spells that an Archer uses for Bushido, Lightning Strike and Confidence. LS offers a 50% Hit Chance Increase plus a 13% crit chance at GM (20% crit chance at 120), and Confidence is a huge healiing & regeneration spell. Plus you can Honor your opponent for up to 100% damage increase, 1000 Luck, and the benefit of receiving HP's, Stam & Mana back after the target is dead. No Archer should be without it in PvM imo.

Hurrrumph,

Only a "game-mechanics *****" would resort to such combinations.

There really is no better skill to add to Archery than Bushido. When combined with Chiv, it makes the offensive power of an Archer unbelievable.

May I know what would be the sequence of spells I would cast prior to killing an enemy? Is it:

Enemy of one
Consecrate weapon
Honouring the enemy
Confidence
and spamming of LS?

I've never tried bushido before and I've been trying to find out how exactly the honouring, confidence and LS worked but all my search on google gave me no results

By honoring the enemy, my next hit (ie. next arrow) would have to kill it?
Confidence seems like a buff that only lasts for a few seconds, and LS seems to work only for the next hit so I would have to constantly spam it while firing my arrows..

What properties should I look for in building my armor set? I read somewhere that 70% resist to all is the best I can get, so would a full virtue armor set be the best for an archer?

Also, what kind of bow should I get?

Sorry if I am asking too many questions.. Just kind of lost at the moment.. :p

Enemy of One should be cast prior to going into any combat when you will be fighting the same type of enemy over and over, or if it's the only one around.

That said, the order is:

Disarm, then Honor your target (disarm keeps you from accidentally shooting your target if auto target kicks in).

Rearm

Cast Divine Fury (if you're going to use it, remember, it does add 10% damage increase)

Cast Consecrate Weapon

Cast Lightning Strike (on each shot)

Fire!!

"By honoring the enemy, my next hit (ie. next arrow) would have to kill it? "

No. Honoring your opponent is actually using the targeting cursor that gets brought up if you were to double click on Honor in the Virtue gump. There is a UO macro for "Use Virtue", which you would set to "Honor". I strongly suggest a 2 key macro, otherwise you're going to end up honoring yourself due to a last target conflict. Target your opponent with the cursor, then follow the steps I outlined above.

"What properties should I look for in building my armor set? I read somewhere that 70% resist to all is the best I can get, so would a full virtue armor set be the best for an archer?"

While the Virtue armor set does provide and all 70's suit, I would suggest you start out with Brightsight Lenses and Rune Beetle Carapace. Between the 2 you get 6 mana regen, 15 lower mana cost, and 10 mana increase. From there add other pieces to add mana regen, stamina increase, and mana increase. That should get you to where you need to be. Also try to get as close to 70's as you can, but if you have to sacrifice in any resist, poison would be the one to do it in.

"Also, what kind of bow should I get?"

That all depends on what it is you're fighting. I prefer very high SSI Heavy Crossbows with mana leech on them. This provides a huge damage output, and also helps to regen your mana as you're fighting. Stamina regen is also a good mod to have, as your stamina, combined with SSI, determines how fast your bow fires. If you're fighting things that will take a long time to kill, such as paragon Balrons, you might want to go with a faster bow so you can get the leeches to go off quicker. One thing you want to keep in mind is that any spell effect that is on a slayer bow will cancel out the slayer damage when the spell effect goes off. That's a lot of damage lost, and I personally prefer not to have any spell effect bows at all in PvM as I'd rather the leeches do their thing and keep me at full power constantly.

I don't know if I'd mentioned this already, but if you're on Pacific, let me know. I can get you going with some pretty decent bows, not to mention armor and jewels.

I'd suggest this template:

Archery 120
Bushido 120
Tactics 100
Anatomy 100
Healing 100
Resist 100
Chiv 80

[/ QUOTE ]

Why the 80 in chiv? You only need 75 to make DF never fail, and 75 is still high enough to cast EoO consistantly. Also, you really only need 90 in healing also. Granted, I have a half dozen fountains making me +10 band-aids, but I don't use them most of the time. And you can take those 15 points and toss them into Tactics for more damage output. And to be honest, I'd take 5 points from Anatomy also, take it to 95, because 120 Tactics& 95 anat is more damage than 115 Tactics& 100 Anat.

Just my thoughts, great template, very close to one of my own archers. =)

80 Chiv is for fewer failures at EoO. From a lot of time spent fighting paragons, the difference is very noticeable, and when fighting something along the lines of a Paragon Balron, the time spent trying to get the spell to cast is a ton of damage lost, plus the loss of the amounts that would have been leeched. It makes a big difference in any kind of prolonged fight as you end up casting EoO mulitple times, especially with the small mana pools we have to work with.

I keep the GM Healing for both the increase in the amount healed, and to lessen rez failures during Peerless, Doom, etc. I hunt with small groups quite a bit, so this is more to benefit the group. Crossheals have a higher amount, and it's less time that another member of the group is down if they happen to die. I also keep Compassion worked up to Knight so anyone I rez is brought back to life with 80% HP's, thus cutting way down on rez kills.

Something to keep in mind also is the 300% DI cap. With 120 Bushido crits and Perfection, a Slayer weapon, high DI on suit/jewels and the various Chiv spells, that cap is hit easily. I guess it's really a matter of what you spend your time doing and what you fight with the character as to whether you want the benefits that would lend themselves more to a group, or to running primarily solo. My archer was set up with both Doom and Peerless in mind, along with soloing the big bads of the game that have slayers for them, which is why I went the direction I did with him.

Coolies, thank you mr Connor! I got myself a full barbed set with 11 mana regeneration, 25 stamina increase for about 80k with resist of 46/66/36/47/54. Couldn't afford the rune beetle carapace but I guess this should get me through for now..

Bought a heavy crossbow with 33% mana leech, hit chance increase 13%, and swing speed increase of 35% for 25k. Currently looking for jewels

Just need to get my skills up, save for the power scrolls and I'm all set! thanks again for all the advice!

46/66/36/47/54

You might want to drop a bit of your mana regen and stamina increase (although those are some nice numbers on those 2 mods) and get yourself a little more high resist pieces. Running in 40's resists is gonna have you dead against most spell casting creatures, and even 100% physical damage is gonna hurt like hell if you get hit. You'll want to have most of your resists above 60, with poison being the only exception to that. Physical, Fire and Energy are the top 3 most important in PvM.

Got some new armor:

mana increase 6
mana regeneration 11
Stamina increase 21
hit point increase 5
hit point regeneration 2
lower mana cost 7%
luck 152
All armor pieces with self repair

With the following resist - 70/70/46/43/72

Picked a ring off the floor:
strength 4
dexterity 8
luck 40
hit chance increase 5%
poison resist 2%

and a bracelet:
anatomy +7
dexterity 5
intelligence 5
damage increase 16%
energy resist 4%

Total cost: 200k =(

May I know if I am using the right type of jewelry? I've been trying to get my cold resist up but can't seem to get it without nerfing the other bonuses or resists

Your primary mods on jewels would be Dexterity, Lower Mana Cost, Damage Increase, Hit Chance Increase, and resists (some intelligence couldn't hurt either just for the mana increase). When you can afford it, I'd strongly suggest getting the Rune Beetle Carapace, as the mods on that chest piece are perfect for an archer, Stormgrips for the Damage Increase and Intelligence increase, and a Totem of the Void for the Lower Mana Cost (at least until you can find some other pieces that can get you more of it. What you have now is a bit low. I run around 30 I believe), then later on you can get a Primer on Arms.

May I know what is the difference between these two primer talismans?

weight: 1 stone
strength bonus 1
hit point regeneration 2
damage increase 20%

and

weight: 1 stone
owned by no one
strength bonus 1
hit point regeneration 2
damage increase 20%

The 2nd one, "owned by no one" becomes blessed when equipped thus requiring no insurance, and shows your characters name. One thing to remember on these, is that if you want it to show your fame title (Lord Soandso), you must have that title prior to equipping it. It also can't be sold once equipped as it's blessed for the person that initially equips it.
