Need clarification on Rules of Conducts regarding selling/buying UO gold

First, I am against the new rule because it is the American way to have competition to bring down price. That being said, it is stratics' rights to make the decision.

I know now player to player gold sale through stratics message boards are prohibited, but how about someone like Home Guild who owns a web site to sell UO stuff and gold for real world currency. Can he still promote his web site without specifically mentioning the gold sale on the messages?

I hope someone in the management can clarify the new rules for us.

what exactly do you not understand?? they dont want any website selling currency or items advertised in the stratics postings.

if this means that you have a website that you link to in your stratics signature, and it sends say... me to that website, and i can buy gold/items etc for cash then you cant link it.

Thats how i read it, and i applaud the stratics staff for making this decision.

It may be the American way to make cash.. But this board is one you join, and agree to its terms..
If you diagree with them.. Look for the door... This place is not for you.

Q. Starting immediately we have implemented a new rule across the Stratics message forums.

A. THIS MEANS NOW...

P. Player to player transactions selling in game virtual items for real life currency are prohibited from being promoted or advertised on our network.
DON'T DO IT...

In the past Stratics has allowed people to use our forums as a medium to sell items for real life money via posts or links. We have also allowed forum avatars and signatures to be used as a means to attract buyers and/or sellers.

EDIT YOU SIGS, TAKE OUT ANYTHING DOING WITH SELLING ITEMS & OR GOLD FOR REAL LIFE CASH...

This policy will now be changing.

Our new policy will be to prohibit the advertising and promoting of player to player transactions for cash.

This will include links and/or signatures advertising sites or sales of items for real money.

This affects only player to player sales. Official game developer company sites offering items etc. - for example uogamecodes.com, or UO Power Up Enhanced Player Services, will still be allowed.

For those of you this change will affect, please make any adjustments to your signatures or avatars - anything that will not be in line with the new policy needs to be edited immediately.

IF YOU NEED AN EXPLAINATION OF THE ABOVE STATEMENT.. READ IT A FEW MORE TIMES.. WRITE IT DOWN 3 TIMES.. IT SHOULD THEN STICK...

Wow.. That was hard reading.... :next:

Seadog, in the past, UO has been a lot more lenient in this regard - but consider that a lot of the other companies expressly forbid that sort of transaction, and many of the places that sell one game's currency, sell that of many others that ban gold or item sales.

WoW hasn't actually banned anyone for casually buying and selling gold in a long long time. Most MMORPGs unofficially accept RMT.
And the fact that all these websites sell gold en masse, just shows that forbidding RL cash trades does not work.
UO is one of the games that invented the RL cash trade. I remember back in 1999 people were selling castles on eBay for $2k. Oh, the good old days ;).

Anyway, I'll respect Stratics' policy (of course!) but I think it's a shame no proper reason is given.

It was the sole decision of the Stratics administration and it was done to protect Stratics from any negative action. ZigZag has said in other U.Hall threads that this was his own decision. I for one applaud his effort to adhere to Mythic's TOS.

Most likely the same why ebay stopped it.

Lemme clear some more things up here :)

The decision wasn't made by myself alone... and it wasn't made lightly.

The decision had zip-zero-nada-nothing to do with EA., nor was it influenced in ANY way by anoyone from EA. First EA heard of it was the same day I made my original post above.

We made this move to further our committment to the UO Community. If, by disallowing these types of posts here we can save just one person from being ripped off, we have succeeded. :)

Life is full of tradeoffs. By doing so, maybe you save one person from being ripped off by a false advertisement message on Stratics, but at the same tme, you force 99 persons go to big web sites and buy UO gold at ripoff price. The only ones affected by the policy are the small fish who have one man operation to sell UO cold. I know many sites like tradespot who banned people to use their web site to sell UO items for real life cash, but their web sites owners are using the site to sell UO gold by themselves. Since Stratics are not in such business, there is little conflict of interest here. I really don't expect the move. But then again, how do I know. Maybe by doing so, Stratics will guild the UO players to the Virtue way, and away from the material way. Better equipments is not the only way to play the game.

Or you could just play the game and make your own gold.

Sorry Zig, didn't mean to take what you said in your other thread out of context. My mistake. I was referring to the original U.Hall thread you made where you said you had been debating doing this. My apologies.

Nobody is forcing anyone to go to any website to buy any gold at any price.

That's a choice an individual makes. There's a simple solution to this quandry.

Stop buying gold. :coco:

Stop buying gold.

Why should someone stop a perfectly legal method of obtaining gold if that's the way they wish to play the game? As long as the gold is legitimately created ingame, there's no problem.

You are right though, noone forces people to buy gold, it is their choice whether or not to do so. And they should have that choice.

By the same token, the gold or any other RMT based item should still be legally obtained through normal ingame play and not through exploits/dupes.

I think the stratics staff realized that in the case of UO:
a) dupers/scripters can obtain an endless supply of gold/items, and
b) dupers/scripters are mostly concerned with turning those virtual items into real life cash, so
c) chances are that a large amount of virtual items being sold for cash are from disreputable sources

And since it's difficult to tell the average joe from the shady seller, they decided to protect their forum members by disallowing all such sales.

I don't disagree with that and respect their choice in that regard.

Personally, I'd love to see all of the dupers and exploiters get put out of business... maybe that will start to help the value of UO gold come back a bit to make it a little less third-world in terms of value per hour which is by FAR the biggest reason why I don't sell anything in UO (I don't buy because I think it's a waste of my own money).

Still, I respect Stratics rules, however Stratics's rule change does not change the legality of RMT sales in UO.

That is easy for you to say. I can only play 2 or 3 hours a week. Add 4 hours if my weekend schedule is clear. With my playing time, I will never have enough gold to buy anything I want.

Right now it is still not too bad for me as the sites selling gold haven't raised their gold price yet after Stratics drove out Joe six-packs out of the market. But eventually they will know. Inflation is coming inevitably, not because of less supply but less competition.

If I am not allowed to have this discussion, please just delete this message. I got enough warnings to protest the new policy.

I respect the decision, but, I don't want my choices taken away.
It's the dupers/scripters/cheaters fault. Ruining everything for everyone.
I wish there was a legit and legal way for an honest player with limited game time, to be able to get stuff that they can't possibly get in their limited time.
Nothing should be easy, but nothing should be impossible.

I have never condoned buying gold. For one, it's a personal embarassment, to myself, and anyone who knows me. The thought of spending real life money on an online game in such a manner is just childish. Not just my opinion, if offended, suck it up.

Outside gold sales have shown that players can and will be, 1) Lazy.....2) impatient, losing the value of something earned....3) Lost, as to what UO once was, an earning game.

I don't have the time to make millions either. My time is limited, I can live without things, it's no big deal. UO is a passtime, not much more. If in fact I want something, I save for it, again, no big deal.

Stratics is making a good choice in not promoting the gold sales. If players feel "have to buy gold":coco:....then go to the websites, possibly get hacked too.

I can only wish UO/EA/Mythic would ban the sales as well:bowdown:

Remember some years back, at an auction house?? An item sold for over a million!!.....those were the days......pricing is a joke, pathetic, and has ruined this game.

No worries! I honestly haven't been like...offended or pissed off by anyone's replies, opinions, or questions...not at all!

My statement that I had been debating this for 5 years may have been a little inaccurate, and I'll explain. :)

I started Modding forums here about 5 years ago, and from day one I asked why player to player sales for cash were allowed here. My use of the word 'debate' earlier may have sounded like I have literally been arguing with people up the ladder from me over this, and that's not the case by *any* means!

So...I hope by clarifying that a bit it's understood this wasn't an internal debate that has taken us 5 years to settle :)
