Necro/Mage Template Help

So I'm looking to design a Necro/Mage that I can make viable for PVP and PVM via use of skill swapping on soulstones.

This is what I have come up with so far:

Skills: (Skill Cap for Account is 705)
Magery: 120
Eval Int: 120
Med: 115
SS: 120
Necro: 110
Resist Spell/Spellweaving (swap): 120

Stats: (Stat Cap for Character is 255)
Str: 110
Dex: 20
Int: 125

I'm looking for comments and suggestions on whether this is an optimal Necro/Mage template or should I rearrange it somehow. I also have a more specific question:

From some of the threads I am reading through I see mention of using a -20 Mage weapon and perhaps I am confused on how a template like this should be played. With all the spell power a template like this packs why would I be engaging in melee?

Regarding the template, you might consider reducing Necro to 105 and raising Meditation to 120. This will get you a little more mana and still guarantee success when casting strangle. While odds go down for some higher level spells, those are not cast as often by me in either PvP or PvM.

The -20 Mage weapon is not so you can seek out melee combat but to protect you from both ranged and melee attacks. You will be getting hit on a regular basis with out any weapon skill, be unable to get a spell off and will generally have very short PvP encounters. The lower the mage penalty on the weapon, the better defence you will have. There are some -0 Mage weapons and a real easy -10 Mage weapon is obtained from the new player magery quest in New Haven. These are all 2 handed and will slow the consumption of potions. Ideally you would find a really low (-) mage weapon that is one handed (this would allow for the fast consumption of potions) and offset the penalty through a Magery skill bonus on jewels.

G'luck

Thanks so much!! That clarifies things tremendously. I suppose I will need to go shopping, I just looked through my weapons I have collected and a lot of mage weapons but none with spell channeling yet.

for the cost effective option, get swords of prosperity, staff of the magi, or the new haven weapon referred to one of the above posts - i haven't played in a while and know nothing of this weapon.

as far as your skills are concerned, they look fine to me. consider swapping out a few things when you PvM for music/peace. i don't know how fel-savvy you are, but necro/peacers can solo/duo any spawn but lords oaks, which is pretty significant to say the least.

your state look fine to me. i would keep your int at 120 max (after gear) because anything after that you won't get the 1 SDI per 10 INT (correct me if i'm wrong).

KEEP IN MIND when PvMing there is no SDI cap. i think my spawn necro mage had around 85 SDI and slayer books.

also, another note on the weaponry. if you can manage to get your hands on ornamaent of the magi, inquisitor's resolution and a crystalline ring then that will negate any 1 handed weapon you have with -20 mage weapon - leaving an open hand for potions.

hope this helped.

The template looks fine, you might want to swap meditation for something else when you are PvMing, if your LMC/MR are good enough. Though, to make the most out of your nercomage in PvM, u'd have to go a lil' weirder way. For 705 skillcap, you can do 100 Magery 120 Eval 110 SS 100 Peace Music Discordance 75 necro. With items that'll make you to 120xMavery/Eval/SS, 100 Peace/Music/Disco/Necro (You can add +Disco/Music Jewels when trying to discordance high-end mobs, after success, take 'em back off). Peace/Music is essential for spawns, as someone mentioned, while Disco gives a huge boost in damage vs. single mobs (like champs or peerless or new random superhard stuff).
