I have 120 archery (105.9 real, i wear a headdress) and 88.4 real tactics... i was training on blade spirits and noticed that after about 900 arrows, i hadn't gained a single point....

I just did a lesser hiyru and didnt get off him (i thought i needed something stronger?) and im wondering.... what do i need to be fighting for best gain?

Its been awhile but I believe I went to Honesty and cross the bridge down to that island area where alot of ettins spawn. The Paragon Ettin is fast but you should be able to gain off that. I hope that helps.

For best tactics gain, I think it works like training pets. That is the targets tactics should be +/- 20 skill points from your for the optimum chance to gain. So if it is something that is too hard or too easy skill wise it can be hard to get gains.

If I remember correctly, I think cyclops and ettins should both work, but your skill is higher than the cyclops and will soon stop working. Lesser hiryu are about 25+ points higher than you are and will be tough to get gains on... wait until you have about 100 tactics for those.

Check the complete hunters guide database for animal and monster skills.

Go the the Cyclops/Titan area near the Honesty gate in Ilsh. Work the Cyclops until you get your Tactics up another 5 points or so, then you can go into the Titan room, clear it out of all but the 2 Titans (drag everything else down the corridor), then take the Titans out one by one. Once they're both dead, only one will spawn at a time. Titans will take all of your skills to whatever level you want them at. Just be prepared to take on the paragon versions, which can be tough until you get the hang of them.

I always liked Arctic Ogre Lords for training archery. Their slow, don't cast, and spawn relatively solo. I have a repeating crossbow with ssi and no DI, remember you want to hit it often but not necessarily kill it. I also take any DI off my suit when I go hunting for skill.

Ya, I did exactly the same thing for archery... but got bored. They spawn too slowly. Then I went to the Painted Caves and ran just inside and to the left. The trogs spawn fast and keep you busy, pretty easy to survive and fast gains. They just spawn and die too fast to loot.

Everyone has a different boredom tolerance level... that is why I added the Hunters Guide link above, for a bit of variety.
