My first Hiryu

Last night I hit bare minimums to tame a Hiryu, so this morning I thought ehhh I'll give it a try. I have a knack for taming beasts with almost no chance. So me and my 0.99% taming chance set off this morning to find a hiryu to our liking...

I didn't see any colored ones, but I did find a nice strong one with good physical and fire resists, 1084 hp, and acceptable in other areas. Is there a better area to find colored ones? I was in the Hiryu forest, and only saw 2 Hiryu, and 2 Lesser Hiryu.

I found the tip to fight them a bit first and get their health low to be spot on, for it allowed me extra time move around.

It took roughly 90 minutes. And WOW do they hit hard. Two hits and I can see my life passing before me, the 3rd would send me to the afterworld... but that hit never came.

Something I didn't know, however, was that Hiryu's DESTROY dragon barding armor. After about an hour, I received the message "Your Dragons Armor is DESTROYED!" and my swampy was naked... I decided to stable him and pick up a free horse instead. There are no dragon barding deeds in Sonoma Housing right now, and they have rarely gone on sale, so.. :/

But the weird thing that happened was that after I tamed him his HP were neutered! He no longer has the capable 1084 hp, he's neutered to 640 hp Max. Is that going to happen when I get to the ability of taming Greater Dragons as well?

Thanks
Some tamer,
Sonoma

Most of the Hiryu's stats halve upon taming. The greater dragon works the same way, HP and str will be halved. What you want to look at are getting decent HP, good resists, and high wrestle. I think the max for an untamed hiryu is 120, which will drop upon taming and be trainable up to 108 (90% of pretame skill).

Congrats JD!.....

If you kill off enough plain coloured Hiryu then a colour normally spawns....one every 5-7 usually.

heh I found my pink by just running through the Isamu-Jima forests, and suddenly I see a self-spawned pink. Great luck lol She has great stats except her health is a lil on the low side, other than that great resists and 107 wrestling.

Grats on taming your first hiryu.

Kill them off to get a color one to spawn.

Thanks all... Have a question.

I don't have or plan on buying SA for a while.
How useful will a Hiryu be in the content I have available to me?

Lastly I was just turned on to Rune Beetles. After playing with them and seeing just how nasty they are, I'm jonesing to get one. Even though its HP are lower its dmg output seems insane, possibly higher than a Hiryu? It just doesn't have as much hp. Is a Rune Beetle better, or just situationally better?

Lastly are there any good writeups on getting a Rune Beetle alone? Servers are so empty these days on Sonoma, its hard to find anyone to assist.

Thanks

I use a hiryu for most of the things I do, SA included. As long as you play it smart, you'll be fine. They tend to die pretty fast if you lose control and get them swarmed though.

Just curious, I see alot of people lead tame melee creatures which I just don't quite seem to get it. If you have peacemaking, it is a bit easier since you can get ready before it starts to chase you. But personally, I just walk tame anything that doesn't have devastating spells. This include cu and hiryu the only two worth mentioning. All you have to do is to stand 2 tiles away and spam tame on it, they will be angered. In hiryu's case it won't matter since it will chase after you whether you attempt to tame or not. They don't run at an increasing speed. Especially in Hiryu's case, (i know the OP has just hit minimum on hiryu), if you have high taming like close to 120, it really just takes 2-3 try which can be done with in a min.

During the process, spam taming and just walk at the same speed. To be safe walk a bit faster and when you are getting "target is too far away" slow down abit till you see "you anger the beast" message again. I have died to cu a couple of time due to lag and weird character jump back display issues, but vs hiryu i have never died and it hit much less than a cu with bleed attack.
