Mutant Plants

I love gardening in UO (much more than RL
) wondered if anyone out there could help...
I've grown quite a few plants over the years, and I've never got a mutant one, I know that they are a 1% chance, but do you get white (or black) seeds, or do you only get the mutation when you grow them? if you only get the mutation when they grow, I've got about 300 plants to grow...

Hi Audiva!

Mutation occurs the moment you cross-pollinate a plant - the number indicating how many seeds the plant will produce will turn white or black immediately after you cross-pollinate if a mutation has occurred. You have an equal chance of getting white or black seeds.

All I can say about not having gotten mutants yet is to keep trying - you'll get some! The RNG can be very uncooperative - I go for stretches where I cross-pollinate a lot and get no mutants, then the moment I do get one, it's something like black prickly pear cactus.

As a side note, there is some superstition surrounding mutation. After the plant system was introduced, people were studying whether they got more mutants by using father plants that were diseased or had bugs, or both. I don't think there was any definite proof that these tactics helped people get more mutants.

I admit that I'm a bit superstitious about it though - every time I get a successful mutation, I toss the father plant into a secure, and use it to cross-pollinate again and again. I feel that using my "lucky fathers" helps me get more mutants, but again, have no definite proof, since I haven't kept track of the numbers

You could always trust Murphy's law too, I'm a recent uo rejoin and started my gardening all over. This week I crossed my 3rd gens to get all the 4th gen variants, while gathering seeds one of the plants was a mutant black. Ponytail palm going by the parents I crossed, the reason I say murphy's Law is I didn't really want mutants. Especially in the palms which I will use to decorate my roof.......

Poppies would have been ok, I don't plan to use them for deco, just like having all the seeds if someone wants specific plants.

A few weeks ago I crossed around 20 plants and I got two black plants. Wasn't even trying really. I just cross when I feel like it or have a few extra that I've grown.

As soon as my latest bumper crop is done I plan to plant tons of flowers and cross em to try and get mutants, I'll do 100 and see what percentage of mutants I get.

I always had a superstitious feeling that the busier the (sub)server was, the better a chance you would have for mutations. I'd haul all my plants to Luna and cross there then take them back home.

One of the first things I did when I started up gardening again was cross about, hmm, I'd say there were probably 150-200 plants that had been left in my char from so long ago...but I forgot about hauling them to Luna and just crossed them at my house...absolutely not one mutation. What a bummer LOL.

I crossed my 100 poppies yesterday, got 1 black mutant, thats it!!

All that work (keg of g. poison nearly every day, and g. cure every other) and just 1 mutant......

Anyone on Napa need a ton of poppies for deco?
