Must have pets

Hey tamers

I followed a friend's advice so after i bought a few more soulstones (since i live on siege) i gave a try to taming, although i used to be against minion kind templates i must say i really enjoy this.

So as the title says nowadays as a new tamer besides collecting pets which ones you wud advice to have at least one? PvM and PvP wise ...(reached RoT yesterday and with the help of a few jewels i boost myself to 100 its a matter of time now to reach 110).

So far (just today) i stabled a nightmare,a rune beetle and a Kitsune(4,3 :O)

I don't know about Siege Perilous, but on production shards people often use Greater Dragons. Do you have pet bondage... err pet bonding on Siege?

Pet bonding rules are the same across all shards, so SP has pet bonding.

Regarding essential pets, I believe the following are core pets for a tamer to have:
  • Greater Dragon (5 slots; a big lump of hit points is always useful, it can be easily out damaged by other pet combinations)
  • Cu Sidhe (4 slots; rideable; it has a very strong attack which deals 50% cold damage, generally the weakest resist on most targets, its self-healing is nice but not as good as your Vetrinary healing)
  • Rune Beetle (3 slots; these guys can be fast (easliy over 150 dex), have a strong poison, and an ability to corrupt armor, if paired with other pets they are devastating)
  • Nightmare (2 slots; rideable; a staple for any tamer, they are good casters, provide a sturdy mount, and pair well with most other pets)
If I were to start a tamer on SP, I would definitely have one of each of the above (my SP characters are not tamers). Once you have these in your stable, you are set for just about anything in the game (both PvP and PvM). You will have a good variety of options and will be a strong asset for any guild or party. This leaves plenty of room in your stable to tame other pets you want to explore, collect pets to sell, or just tame for the fun of it.

The list of tameable pets can be found here: http://uo.stratics.com/content/skills/anim.php

Your Bake Kitsune (2 slots) will make a deadly offensive combination with a good rune beetle.

1.Greater dragon
2.Cu Sidhe
3.nightmare
4.rune beetle
5.bake

Is my personal preference, I don't like having two pets out at the same time.

And if you get lucky enough to find them, I'd put dread war horse and bane dragon on the list just under Greater Dragon

At your current skill level I think you've probably got the best pets to start with, I used a pair of kits and a 1 slot mount on all my younger tamers at that level, just because it's good to have 2 fighting pets and still be mounted to get your newbie butt out the way of danger. They can certainly handle PvP ;) I occasionally pair them up with other pets, but I prefer 2 kits together plus a mount.

Once you're able to tame and control them, I'd look at getting things like the cu sidhe, and if you want to follow the crowd, a GD. For now though, I'd try and split time between training up taming and training your pets and getting some practice handling them. If you can keep a pair of pets alive in tough situations, you'll find everything else easy.

I'd also recommend looking at the tameable pets list and just pick out whatever sounds interesting and having fun with it. Especially if you've never handled a specific pet before. Many tamers stick with the best known pets but there are many outside that list which are just as enjoyable. So try what interests you as well as what others recommend, then you get a good mix of power and fun :)

Hmm since i m kinda new to the game i wasnt aware of the bonding rules so a friend today told me that i need to have real skill for the animal to bond,so the question does the system check when you first stable it ? or next week when i take em out (which by then i can concentrate on my RoT gains)

It doesn't have to be real skill :) You can wear a skill boost item when you feed and then stable your fresh tame. After the 7 days wear the skill item and claim then feed the pet in 7 days to bond it. So it's perfectly possible to have pets in the stable while you train up the skill to control them.

one of my favorite days in uo. i was on seige making my tamer on day no 2. was standing at trinsic moongate talking to a friend and i had 5 grizzly bears tamed and somewhat worked. all of a sudden some guy pops thru the gate and flags on me. i all kill with the 5 grizzleys and took him down in 5 seconds flat. the trinny gate really only has one way to go if u cannot teleport. the guy definately didnt expect it. was one of the funniest things i've seen in uo.

another suggestion for seige is to work ur sacrifice virtue which gives u self rez options. i killed quite a few guys over there who just killed my tamer and were too busy looting my body when i suddenly rezzed and put my idle pets on them.

There was a dude on siege ages ago who hunted reds with a pack of bulls. Didn't kill them too often (sometimes!), but he made them run. :p

I switch between 2 GD's depending on what I'm doing. I also like rolling with a fully trained rune beetle and nightmare as a pair.

I'm still farming for a nice top stat Cu. That's next on my list.

I have only started my tamer up in the last 12 months and have been building up a goodbase of pets, for tanking ability a high end cu or GD is the way to go. For out and out damage I have a rune beetle and a bake (both at 4.4 which is nice) but I try to mix it up sometimes. if something else can hold agro you would be surprised how much damage "lesser" pets with pack intincts can inflict. Training them can be a bit tough depending on what your training on but you will get the hang of that as you go along. Personal fav is Beetle / Bake (only nightmare if I need to mount up as bake will out DPS a nightmare generally)
