Whats really the point of mobs (like Lurg or Grubo) having been boosted to such redicilous speeds. Thought it would be fun to do a little Painted Caves like good old times...big mistake, only reached to see the name Lurg on the screen and then a second later I was dead and thats on a legendary mage with many arties and near full resists.

What exactly is the point of the mob speeds to such redicilous levels? Its not really a challenge when you can't even fight them.

It is challenge. If you can just run away from everything that hits you, there's really no challenge. You can fight them, you just have to use the right skill set or play yours my tactically. Sometimes you need to opt out of using a mage.

One question though, had you gone out of the cave & then immed back in ? For there has been a bug for years now (4+) that monsters remember & come back at the speed of light speed.... Just have one Master Mikael/Jonath or Lady Jennifer target you in Bedlam & you go out, he flies to the the other end & the second you pop back into Bedlam, he's flying back at you in warp speed...

Hehe, even a Legendary Mage with 70s resist tends to be a squishy opponent :p
Hope you werent wearing a conjuerer's trinket or an undead book.

Yeah, but its silly when you don't even get a chance to react before you're dead.

Why would a conjurers trinket have mattered? Lurg isn't undead.

Sometimes you have to adjust your tactics. How about a pre-cast invis? Or maybe have an old invis clothing item ready. This can give you some needed time to get your thoughts in order. I have always been a big fan of the pre-cast invis when running into situations that might be iffy.

Lurg is respond. You get double damage from him wearing the conjurers trinket.

That is a good idea, wouldn't have helped any though, as at that speed there was no way to combat it. Did try again just for kicks with pre-cast invis, couldn't really damage him too much and he ended up getting me anyway jumping through the cave in less than a second.

Good point actually, forgot about the reverse slayer thing. But no, I wasn't wearing the Conjurers trinket or any other slayer for that matter.

Sounds like a challenge you havent figured out yet.
Apart from changing to another character, there's little way to do it with a mage, the question isn't the challenge, but the need for them (and other mobs) having so ridiculous speeds that you can't do anything or employ any meaningful tactics. For those classes where speed doesn't matter (like warriors), then there's no point in the mob having such lightning speed anyway.

I think the reason is so that different monsters require different templates to be handled effectively. The super fast ones are a pain for mages, but melee warriors probably don't notice a difference (at least with regard to the fast movement because they want to be up close anyways). They went through a phase where everything they introduced was resistant to bard skills (tokuno & ilshenar have a lot of these but they have backed off a bit recently). They added area hit to a lot of creatures so one-trick-pony tamers (har har) who would do nothing but "all kill" and vet would have to come up with some new strategies.

I think it's good that different templates can handle certain situations better. I also like that people need to come up for different strategies when using their characters against a variety of monster types.

As far as a mage fighting Lurg or other fast movers, pre-casting invis is a good way to get your bearing straight and get organized. Then an EV (or maybe an earth Ele) to set up the target and keep it busy will allow you time to dump some spells on them. Just one suggestion for strategy - the fun is in figuring it out.

Evs does next to no damage to him and dumping spells draws agro easily and gets you killed instantly.

So yeah, not a mage type monster anymore...just kinda sad as I used to hunt Lurgs a lot as a mage.

But again, if its only for melee why even have the super speed.
