Weren´t we able to dye them before?

And if so, why the change...?

the monks robes came about after people used a exploit to use Tokuno dyes and such on the Hooded Shroud of Shadows and Umbra robe etc. so they put in a code that turned all the illegal dyed shrouds into Monks robes. they also added them to a npc vendor so to keep them from being a rare.

hilariously monks robes are more rare on siege than hooded shrouds as we don't have the vendor selling them but they were given at the one point.

You can faction dye monks robes still but that's all (make them white or black), can't use the other ones.

I don't see why the devs would care if we had dyed robes. I would like to have a hooded robe for non-elves that isn't brown or charcoal.

Would be nice to at least be able to use the dye tubs on them... :sad4:

Actually, as I recall, the reason monks robes were introduced had absolutely nothing to do with dyed Umbra and Shadows robes, but instead was because there had been a ton of duped cloaks -- I don't remember their name, but they were a bluish color -- and when they fixed the dupe, they retroactively turned all of the duped ones into monks robes. They then added the monks robe to a vendor so that those who had not participated in the dupe or bought what had been publicly announced as duped robes could also get their hands on a now very common item. The duped cloak is one that is now available as one of the [Replica] cloaks, I just don't remember which one it was.

Why they've never made them so they can be dyed was once purported to be that people could dye them colors similar to EA employee robes, and that people might confuse them with each other, even though, you know, the gold trimmed robes are significantly different than the other robes, not to mention GM names are different colors, so on and so forth.

Shroud of Shadows , they were bugged dupes of the hooded robe of umbra and an item that wasn't supposed to be available to players, and yeah, they were turned to monks robes (not to be confused with the later introduced "hooded shroud of shadows" which uses the same base item but is a different item). I remember that, they were EVERYWHERE, a lot of people who didn't know they were illegal were absolutely screwed by that move (since pretty much everyone had them and they were regularly sold on vendors for YEARS before that)

It was the Shrouds of Tal'Keesh that were duped, which produced the dyeable Shrouds. The Shrouds of Tal'Keesh originated on Napa, and unfortunately, at the time, Napa was home to the King of Dupers (He who shall not be named on Stratics) himself

As the later response correctly notes, it was, indeed, the Shroud of Tal'Keesh. The Hooded Shroud of Shadows was, indeed, meant to be obtained by players, as it was a pre-sale reward for pre-ordering UO:AoS. The Hooded Robe of Umbra was a substitute for the Hooded Shroud of Shadows in some foreign markets because the Hooded Shroud of Shadows was culturally unacceptable.

Yes, I know UOGuide indicates something different, and this is where there is cause to be concerned about "wikis." Just because it's written doesn't make it true. ;)

Thank you! I couldn't remember which one it was, but yes... this is the one. :)

I didn't even check uoguide, I was going off my memories from Origin. Perhaps there were two different instances? I CLEARLY remember a dupe bug with the robe of umbra that produced a bugged shroud, I even knew someone back then who showed it to me. (making a "shroud of shadows" from a robe of umbra, this is NOT the "hooded shroud of shadows" though, the robe was quite different, this version was never meant to be gotten and there is currently no way to get ). I forgot about the whole asian market thing, I only ever saw robes of umbra around (I restarted playing just around SE launch, I missed AOS) , but trust me, this is the bug that made them put in the monks robes initially, the bugged shadow shrouds were selling by the hundred and those were all changed to monks robes, but IIRC they included some other bugged items in that sweep as well. I looked at the UOGuide page and it looks like the names are just confused, like someone saw the "shroud of shadows" page and modifiied it thinkign it was the one for legacy tokens, it's not, they're different items.

when AOS came out and you pre ordered it you got a hooded robe of shadows.
one per account.

the asians got 5 hooded robes of umbra from the same thing, because like mentioned above, they didnt like the shadow ones for whatever reason.

as for the monk robes, they came out when the market was saturated with the duped ones you could change to any color (as all the other hoodies you couldnt) so everyones duped ones got changed into monk ones.
and they they put them for sale that the yew abby on the monks so the 'monk' robes wouldnt be considered rare either.

and to punish everyone for the riot of colors that all the duped robes where they made the monk ones non dyable and non insurable.

was rather a nifty way to kill the problem.

then to make everyone happy it seemed like every event after that for a year they gave away some sort of hooded robe of some sort or another.
now there are like what.... 13 different hooded robes?
all but 2 you can dye.
  1. Hooded robe of Shadows
  2. Hooded robe of Umbra
  3. A Monk's Robe
  4. Cloak of Dead
  5. Cloak of Life
  6. Cloak of Power
  7. Cloak of Silence
  8. Cloak of Corruption
  9. Cloak of Command
  10. Embroidered Oak Leaf Cloak (replica and real)
  11. and the one that got duped, Shrouds of Tal'Keesh
  12. The Robe of Britannia - Ari - (real and replica)
  13. The most Knowledgeable Person (real and replica)

And since we can dye Replica ones that has the same animation as the Monk one then there´s really no reason not to allow us to dye the Monk´s Robes.

Come on devs. You know you want to... ;)
