Mid tamer question: Pet comparison

Hi, I'm around 96.x taming right now and I can tame dragons barely but they keep getting angered, so I'm looking into other pets for now while I work on that.

1) I noticed Drake takes more skill to tame than the Bake, but Bake has 100 more HP and seems stronger with better resists. Would you rather hunt with a GM Bake, or GM drake? Drake doesn't seem to use breath weapon much either. (IE is there any point for me to mess with drakes?)

2) Lastly, I can also get Unicorns now as of last night. But again the HP and resists on the Bake seem better. It's cool I can ride it though so I might do 1 Uni + 1 Bake. So my question is if they were GM would you rather do 1slot mount+2 Bake, or 1 Uni+1 Bake?

Thanks

I often go out with my two bakes and riding my horse, but I also have used my nightmare with one of them. My wife has had alot of enjoyment with her two unicorns. What is best depends on your play style and the situation. I used my bakes during the invasions as they seem to have a better dps rate/survival rate than anything else against the crimson dragons. Bake/nightmare is great against swoops or liches. Try different combinations and see what works for you. What works for you may not work for others and vice versa.

A ride isn't always necessary.
My favorite combo is a Rune and a Bak. I believe they deliver the most damage/second of any combo that can reasonably tank.

Rune/bake and bake/bake are killer combos, high dps and good tankability. For the taming skill required, it's tough to beat a bake, they are little powerhouses. Both the drake and the unicorn are pretty feeble compared to the bake.

Thanks for the answer - its a lot of work to train stuff up, I didn't want to invest all that time just to find out I should've worked on something else.

Discoed pets gain a lot faster especially at higher skill levels. The only exception might be Magery since Meditation is also lowered.

I assume Disco is a bard thing? Since we're on the subject of what tamers should have.... what should I have:) My skills are kind of several places right now but it's time to decide.

I'm shooting for
100 Magery - maybe 120
120 Taming
100 Lore - So I can lore without taming first
80 Vet - for res (Question- is the 100 vet and stable spot worth it?)

Game decision time:
I have 100 Eval int. Do I need it?
I have 100 meditation. The mana regen is awesome, but do I need it?
I have 61.6 resisting spells. Again do I need it?

This will not be a tamer mule but a main toon, possibly eventual PVP

Thanks for answering a newbs questions =)

Well, with just 80 vet, you'll fail to res your pets a heck of a lot.

Depends on how you want to play the tamer. I usually roll mage tamers, they're all 6X120 with the exception of one account that is too young so magery is only 115 on that tamer. I also have music, peace and disco at 120 for those tamers as well, so I can stone them out on the fly. For the most part though (98+% of the time), I'm running mage tamers, which I like best for pet support as well as assisting the pet in whatever they are doing. For PvP, I'd forget the bard skills and go straight mage tamer, but that's just me.

Re Vet...
You can carry a couple of jewels when you need to rez.
You can use Enhanced Bandages for 10 additional points to Vet (not rez).
Having said that, 80 Vet is way to low in my opinion. Try it on Test.

Might want to check out the new SA creature, the High Plains Boura. Haven't played with one myself, but they look pretty nice for a mid-level creature. Could team it up with a 2-slot boura for pack instinct damage bonus.

But lowland boura do have pack instinct. The two boura together are about as effective as a cu sidhe alone (at least in a head to head) and only require 55 taming to use.

But they're slow as molasses, so I avoid them except for the new tamers in training.

Once you hit 90 skill, there is no replacement for the bake kitsune. They're far-and-away the best bang for the buck, and I even use my bake at 115 taming. The rune beetle is the perfect companion for the bake as well, as their armor corrosion attack really amps up the damage done.

As far as templates go (This part is for JD), I have more than 110 in taming, lore, vet, med, EI and magery. Any less in any of those skills would be worthless to me. If I would make one adjustment to that template, it would be to drop EI completely and add in spellweaving.
