Melee Tamer

I'm working on a melee tamer that does not use Bushido. The main purpose would be PvP, but I'd like them to be able to be atleast useful when along with the PvM hunts.

The build I have now is
100: Tame, Lore, Vet, Anat, Heal, Tact.
120:Fencing.

Problem I'm running into is the lack of defense from parry, any ideas?

Also, lore, tame is at 100 because this character's highest pet will be a nightmare, doesn't plan on any GD's or the like.

Add 45 DCI to your equipment its about all you can do. & use a weapon that has the Feint Special move on it.

120 Fencing
115 Bush
115 Parry
105 Taming
105 Lore
100 Tactics
60 Chiv

4/6 chiv heals and pots. Gonna need 40 lmc, lots of mr (use conjurer's garb), 45 dci, and 45 hci. If you haven't already trained fencing, you might consider swords: nerve strike makes it much easier for your pet to kill folks. I bumped taming/lore to 105, so you can use cu. Mares die too quickly in both PvM and PvP.

For PvM events, you can stone off bush for vet. Just rely on your parry.

I think you'd be happier with this build that your current one.

From what I'm learning of melee,Sirus's seems to be pretty solid advice. And I can vouch that even a really nice mare does die fast if it gets targeted. Mine is a 3.9 fully trained and it croaks super fast. Lame, but whatever, thems the breaks.

Cu's are nice and I support his suggestion. If you go with a melee, carry bolas to dismount. PVP is annoying because people either do massive damage or they run away. You gotta be able to stop or slow them down. If you go archery you can rely on a heavy for dismounts.

I have been on this sampire trip lately and did some thinking, How can I tweak my tamer and merge with Sampire and make more fun?

I came up with this template, untested. Relies on imbued jewels heavily, check it

Ring/Brace set 1: +26 Bush, +26 Tactics, +26 Taming
Ring/Brace set 2: +26 Vet, +26 Tactics, +26 Taming

Why 2 sets of jewels? You will see soon. One set is your "attack mode", the other is "pet support mode". Easily switchable with 1 key press in EC, or possibly UO assist in CC. Also you would switch out totem of the void for the Birds of brit taming talisman when you switch to vet jewelry. You will not need Bushido if you're ever vetting your pet so the fact they are in the same imbuing skill group is actually really handy.

Archery: 120 (+20 from Hunters' Headdress)
110 Tactics (+26 from Jewels)
80 Vet (+26 from Jewels in support mode- just enough to res)
99 Necro
120 Bushido (+26 from jewels)
75 Chiv
120 Taming (+26 from jewels, +5 from Birds of Britania talisman)
110 Lore (+5 from birds of brit talisman)

This seems a fun template to play, the holes are the mana regen and resists

I was gonna go imbue items on test to see how well it worked.

If the sampire part of you is tanking, and lifetapping to keep you alive, theoretically you shouldnt need to really be healing pet since it is just supplemental damage.

Just increase Taming if you can buy the scroll, drop animal lore to 0 if human. Human with joat you have a base of 20 for free in all skills, so 120 Tame and no lore human only (free 20 lore) control is at 99%, can't go any higher, thats 80 free skill points, and nightmares are harder to control than dragons.
You will need animal lore to cure your pets or res them. Vet alone wont count, But you could use Chiv to cure and higher than 40 chiv will remove a curse most of the time, (dont forget with joat of 20 chiv you will fail alot, but worth trying, costs 10 lol, (we are tamers so super rich, or were) :()

look here for control http://www.tamingarchive.com/

I won't give away my full template nor equipment but I've got two "PvP" tamer templates:
  1. 110 tame and lore to control the big pets including the Cu-s
  2. 100 tame and 80 lore to control two bake kitsunes with about 60 vet

From my experience, the bakes appear to get VERY dangerous in a hurry with their rage ability. Add in mage spam and they could be fun. Their low HP is a problem.

As was pointed out to me, a majority of "PvP" tamers rely upon their pets too much. So with that in mind, my templates are built to be stand alone with pet bonus damage.

For PvP, use Spellweaving, for PvM, use Necro/SS + swamp dragon (if using a 4-slot pet)

Will need 70 at least to control a blake at 99% if tamining is at 100, why 80?
Here is the number crunching I did using the stratics animal calculator(taming/lore):
100/60 0%
100/70 53%
100/80 99%
90/80 93%
90/90 99%

What you will instantly see is that 90/90 is the same as 100/80... so that instantly begs why would a dummy go with 100 taming? My answer is simply that I wanted an extra stable slot:mf_prop:

why 80, i ment 80 is too high, actualy at 100 tame/ 65 lore, control is at 99% for a bake-kitsune.
The {stratics animal calculator(taming/lore)} is WRONG, has been for years and years, 1999 i think, never has been corrected.

Actually the Stratics formula is correct - our taming pages have been updated along with a lot of the website content :) The pet control formula was changed some time ago, but the PRC site hasn't been updated to reflect that. This page has the correct formula.

The new control formula is weighted to encourage taming and lore above the animal's minimum taming skill.

Actually in my opinion a mare is highly underrated. But they do require the ability to heal, and you should avoid allowing them to tank. One word of advice, if you think you are going to be able to keep your pet alive with vet, you should probably think again. No one stands still in pvp, and a moving pet is hard to vet, and most of the higher end pvm content won't allow you to stand by your pet and vet.

When you learn more about taming you come to realize that most pets are most useful in a specific context, and that is true of mares. However, if you want a more generally useful pet, especially if you don't have the ability to heal from a distance, something like a cu sidhe, or a dread war horse if you can get one, is a better choice for general usage.

Cu sidhe and hiryus are great for the kill shot in pvp because they do a tremendous amount of damage in a single hit, but the cu sidhe is probably the better general purpose choice because it will heal itself and it doesn't have any glaring weaknesses in terms of resists, if you find yourself a good one.
