Does that mean anything to anyone??

So, since mid-March I have been trying to straighten out the latest patching cockup. UO simply would not start. I read that starting UOA and patching that way was the problem. I tried starting without it. Nothing. I was told "maybe" I needed to delete the desktop icon and start through client.exe in the folder. Nothing. Just the following:

Failed to open 'map0LegacyMUL.uop' from HD using a maximum install. Either this file is not readable, your system needs to be rebooted, or the file does not exist and you either need to reinstall or switch to a non-maximum install.
I deleted and uninstalled everything including UOA. I installed my most recent disc and patched from there. Still when I click the desktop icon, it stalls. Nothing happens. Just to be on the safe side, i left it alone after double clicking the icon for 8 hours, waiting for the program to start. Nothing. I stopped the process tree in Task Manager. I went through the program files and tried to start client.exe from the folder. Again, nothing but the good ol' error:

Well...I did reboot. Same thing. I am on dial-up and 28.8kbps is the top speed. That's the only option here, so don't waste time discussing that. Yes, the game has always been playable at that speed. But it does make reinstalling a week and a half long process.

So now what? Any ideas on how to get the game to work? I need a definite answer, not a stab in the dark. And no, I will not be "trying" another reinstall. Is there anyone around here that knows anything?

go to your uo install directory and run uo.exe
click the checkbox in the lower left corner that says perform full file check

That does nothing. Same as trying to start UO from the desktop icon. Hourglass next to the cursor for 5 seconds then nothing. No start screen, no box to check, nothing.

And of course the "EA Helpline" is no help. Got stuck twice now with people unfamiliar with the game who had no solutions.

First off, I would check whether the "map0LegacyMUL.uop" actually does exist in your UO folder (Size should be around 85.7MB). This file is the conversion of your map0.mul (your Felucca Map, btw.), which should have been created by the last "conventional" patch in early march. If it is not there (together with other mapXLegacyMUL.uop: 0x, 1, 1x, 2, 3, 4, 5), this conversion simply failed and would result in the error mentioned (but you should have the old mapX.mul files instead).

I have seen this happening on a Windows XP SP3 machine, where no usable VC (Visual C++) was around to start the conversion process.
You might want to check your %windir%\WinSxs\ directory for any "*_Microsoft.VCxx*.*" folders: are there any?
Do you see a file named PackerLite.exe in your UO folder?

Don't have any map files with Legacy in the name, but I do have the 0x, 1x, 2,3 files. I do have Microsoft VC files.
I do have PackerLite.exe

I have no idea what to do about any of it.

Ok, then it looks like you are definitely stucked at the map conversion process.
What Winows version are you on?
What version are those VC-folders? (eg. VC80, VC90)

What I would do.
Save your char's desktop files somewhere then uninstall
Do not install from a disc
download the new CC installer from EA Ultima Online Client Downloads | Mythic Entertainment | Ultima Online
Run the installer.

Petra: Character files are long gone when I uninstalled and deleted everything the first time. Someone here and at the EA "help" (lmfao) tech support line said eliminate/delete/uninstall all traces of UO. It was a week and a half to patch from the disc. Wouldn't it likely be a month to DL the entire game and patches on my dial-up, which maxes out at a whopping 28.8kbps? I have no other option than dial-up in my area.

Meaningless aside: All these years, I never pronounced your name outloud. In my head, I have been pronouncing it "Peetra FihDay", the y sounding like the short i in Fig. "Peetra" because I know a guy with that last name who pronounces it with the long e, same spelling. Soooo... I finally get your name. Lol. My brain is on dial-up, too.

oh heck! There are no patches now. It downloads the current files, that's what changed. You don't install and then patch up, you just install and you're good to go.
hehehe. Almost all my character names are puns, petrified being the first of them

I'll give it a try. Nothing to lose. Guess I'll get rid of every last vestige of UO in all the nooks and crannies again. I guess see ya in 2 weeks to a month.

Ok, those VC90 folders being empty is not good...
What I would do now is try to reinstall the Visual C++ 2008 Redist; you can get it directly from Microsoft (small download, only ~4MB):

(choose the x86 version if you are on a plain Windows XP 32bit)

After the install of the VC, restart UO.exe. If you are lucky, you should see a black box appearing and some conversions being made. Do not interrupt this process, it will take a little while.
When you see the new patcher window, you will have another 440MB+ to go... *sigh*

Do not install from a disc, download the new CC installer from EA

Of course the best solution, but on dial-up a real last resort!
