Making some Veteran rewards useable by anyone

After getting back into the game a few weeks back, and having had to create a new account before that, unfortunately for me my account is restricted in what it can and cannot use. Now I have nothing against the rewards being given to veteran players, they've certainly stuck around long enough and paid their small fortune to support and play the game. But in the current server population state and the age of the game, I believe some of these items are just too far out of reach for the majority. Yes, Ultima Online may still be alive and kicking in five years/ten years time, let's hope so! But why restrict those new players from simply dying their own clothes or armour for instance? Or adding some nice decoration to their house?

My main concern and the reason for this post is the dye tubs. Yes they're a nice reward, and I don't believe that should change. But let players who purchase a tub, or find one in a vendor house, actually use it. Don't make them have to wait five years just to dye a statue for instance. Giving players the ability to use them isn't going to unbalance the game in any way, it's going to make playing easier for newer players and/or younger accounts.

Now their are a lot of rewards, some such as the mounts should stay exactly the way they are. These listed below however, I believe need to be made useable by any account age. I'll mention once again just to be clear, these should still stay as veteran rewards, but be useable by anyone.

  • Special Dye Tub
  • Furniture Dye Tub
  • Leather Dye Tub
  • Black Dye Tub
  • Runebook Dye Tub
  • Statuette Dye Tub
  • Decorative Shield
  • Hanging Skeleton
  • Ankh - (Decorative one, not the self resurrection one)
  • Bloody Pentagram
  • Decorative Cannon
  • Tree Stump
  • Wall Banner
  • Mining Cart (It provides a few ingots a day? A 10 year veteran is going to probably have resources in the hundreds of thousands)

What do you all think? Am I just being cynical or do I make a valid point which should be addressed? Perhaps you don't think certain items in that list should be made useable by anyone? If so, post below.

Tree stumps and mining carts can be used by any account age now, they just can't place them unless they're the right age. I agree with you on most of the other items though. The cannon is debatable, but the rest I don't see any reason for everyone not to be able to use/place them.

You can dye just about anything now with natural dyes made from plants, which anyone can grow. I understand your point but there are many more options now than before. I remember being only able to supply plain leathers, no fancy colours, so I sold matching desert ostards too. Really I don't see any need for any decoration to be tightly restricted, never have. I appreciate some people love their rares for rarity's sake, but I feel if a piece of game art exists there should be a way to obtain it.

The dye tubs are really the only useful rewards and they aren't game altering so it wouldn't matter who could use them. The rest are just decoration, and it really doesn't matter who uses them.

I like the idea of something to show vet loyalty, and the ethereals are the only things that really show up and are noticeable. Everything else probably should be claimable by vets but usable by anyone.

Totally agree.

Agree with everything OP said.

The ethereals and the robes make sense, because it does show I guess who the veterans are.. But I would assume I'm not the only one who has a young account that has played for 8+ years.

Personal bias aside though, I still agree. They're just deco items. Being a veteran gives you the picks, and thus gold if you choose to sell them. They should be usable by regular players.

Agree! Countless times I've had to call a GM to remove skeletons/banners because the house owner account wasn't old enough to use them (remove them).

Thankfully I have use of an old friends account which allows me to place the veteran deco in my house as a co-owner. Unfortunately once you place it the co-owner cannot be removed. This happened with a hanging skeleton just a few days back. It took the GM over 15 minutes to give me the deed once removed, and unfortunately the deed doesn't work... Have still yet to file another request for it to be exchanged.

Sounds about accurate of our GM support. Normally I don't bother paging for anything.

I wouldn't usually, but for a bug like that and no way to remove it, it's the only thing you can do.

The pleasure of being able to use a leather dye tub as a tailor, and to ride an ethereal depended on having to wait. The waiting and looking forward to using them were also a pleasure.

Delayed gratification is not necessarily a bad thing. It can bring its own rewards.

  • Over 8 years ago after I just started playing I made a similar comment, especially on the leather dye tub. Since tailoring was my main ingame profession back then, and one could still sell GM made armour - I felt the restriction on the dye tubs was really limiting. I made a deal with another player who dyed my GM made suits for free, but it was awkvard relying on someone else to just dye them. I felt I wasted their playtime.

My post then was met with posts like "earn it", and " you will feel the same as we do when you are able to use them yourself" Well, after 8 years I still think the restriction on the dye tubs is bull. So yes to your suggestion!

They have a valid point, and yes I believe they have earned it. But they could easily swap them out for other rewards. But they are still earning it with the method I suggested, they would still be rewards after all. :)
