Magery and Private Homes

I noticed that spells such as chain lightning, meteor swarm, and earthquake no longer work to attack characters through the walls of a private home (or for the old peeps, the walls into the balrons). However, I did notice that the mystic spells animate weapon and hailstorm can be cast onto players through walls (even into the center of the house)

Why is this? Can magery get some love?

I don't know for sure but think it's like that due to PvP and house fighting. The other spells will probably get nerfed to stop them from effecting outside the house too imo. *shrugs*

It does not seem fair that they would take it away from one and give it to another. I'm more curious as to if they intended for it, or if they didn't take the time to check it with mystic spells. It should be an all or nothing type thing imo.

Again, if I am not mistaken they were "nerfed" because the folks that house fight were complaining about them. As far as why Mystic spells are not done that way, I would guess the house fighting types have not griped about it enough to get that nerfed also. Especially since the "fix" of not being able to go into a house if you have flagged someone, atleast I think I remember reading about that happening. I don't house fight so don't really keep up with it. I would be willing to bet once enough folks gripe about the Mysitc spells having that same effect, they will nerf those too.

it doesn't really make sense to be able to cast spells through walls. I always kinda thought it was strange there was not a fog of war around walls to begin with but just accepted it as part of UO.

so, Kreeper, to say people are griping or whining about it in some way is kind of silly. seems to me you are criticizing people and belittling them for taking a completely logical position.

maybe you could try to explain or justify to us why you should be able to cast through the walls of someone's house?

Oh goodness... this one bugs me too.

TRASH SPAWN! When minding your own business in your house, why can a monster even see you through the walls? Not to mention a headless that has no eyes and no nose. Casting a nice EQ took care of the pest making noise outside that makes you turn your sound off so you can have peace and quiet. Otherwise, outside... one e-bolt, and back to business. It was a stupid change of the rules to remove EQ damaging rubbish outside.

Now... if there was any true “intelligence” in the monster AI, they would be able to tell when a player was thousands of times more powerful then they are and wander away or RUN away screaming before you had to attack them. hehe. A tamer or mage that’s killed over 1 million monsters over the years? I could see bothering a crafter... but even my main crafter has killed powerful monsters.

I call it “Fear Factor”... and have beating this drum for over 11 years.

I suspect Mysticism spells behaving differently than Magery spells in that regard is solely a matter of Magery spells were fixed some ten, twelve years ago, while Mysticism was released just over two years ago... And the people programming Mysticism weren't avid PvPers and didn't really conceive of the spells being used in that manner (since all other systems "prevent" house fighting).

But yes, I agree, it should be all or nothing. I prefer the "nothing" route, as even back in the days that Magery shot through walls it didn't really make much sense (though, I suppose the counter argument might be that a meteor shower would probably blast holes in roofs, but since we're not at that level of realism, I'd err on the side of a home should be a safe haven).
