I've never experienced faster gains simply by not having lore in my template during training. What has made a difference is keeping my overall skill point usage as low as I can, so I maximise my GGS gains. Usually I let lore rise alongside taming, but once it hits the required skill cap (usually looong before taming!) I will soulstone it off if I can. But purely to keep my skill points below 350, not because animal lore is a problem
Hope that makes sense!
If you look at
this page and scroll down, you'll find a handy chart which explains what happens to your GGS gains as your skill points increase.
In the past I've started new chars with points in taming/other tough skills and trained those up first to get the best results. Then I either soulstoned off a skill when it was done or just accepted the slower gains for the skills I added in later on.
