Hum I think if he gets to have a new castle we should get to blow it up. The family is divided on this but most of us don't trust the man. And who is this new council. They just appeared, and elect Casca. Very strange

I agree. I'm not pleased. I had no say in the matter.

Just curious, does Gariott have a contract with EA that says his castle has to remain, or can it be leveled along with Blackthornes (assuming Casca will have a Nemesis) ?

If you remember some of Inu's very, very old prophecies ... well, they will give you nightmares.

Prophecies of Inu from April 7th 2006:

Britain: "The rivers shall boil and the walls melt!"
Luna: "Stone upon stone shall crumble to dust!"

Sept 2nd 2006, Casca (an elven ambassador from Heartwood) was selected as a neutral prosecutor for the charged, often delayed, trial of Ricardo on the charge of inciting the ophidian war (that indirectly led to blackrock scattering across the land)

After winning a conviction, his fame and prominence rose quickly within the court. The sole survivor of the assassination of the royal court, he was rescued (by we adventurers) from the same dungeon where a traitor had previously taken Inu the Crone a year earlier (where she had rambled about "kingdomreborn!" for the first time).

Now, as the sole survivor of the Royal Council, he has been charged with the defense of the land in these troubled, invasion-ridden times, his role now formalized by taking the throne.

I don't like the idea of an elf ruling over humans. It would be like having a human rule Heartwood, they wouldn't stand for it.

Wait! I forgot something important ... there was another survivor. Lady Aileen caught wind of a conspiracy and fled the castle (perhaps with Sherry the Mouse?) just prior to the massacre. To the best of my knowledge, she has never been found.

"We take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer of the week..."

(btw...someone already went down the Python path with this on the other thread. Of course, I cannot resist a good Grail reference!)

Do we get to build a new castle for him?

Are you serious?

What effect, if any, do you think a several paragraph "story" post to the UO Herald is going to have in the actual game? The last time the Herald or any of its associated storyline drivel had any resemblance of relevance was during the Minax invasions. Hah. Like DAILY life is going to change because some *insanely* obvious frontman for the Shadowlords has taken control of the previously impotent "Royal Council" and has proclaimed himself King.

Quick question here. How much would you say Inu, and her associated storyline has affected your Sosarian existence? She operates as pretty much a casual oracular NPC witness to scripted, unsatisfying and grossly infrequent events. How about Blackrock? What was blackrock ultimately other than a collectible turn-in? The most dangerous substance known in the Ultima loreset, MINED by the DUMPTRUCK to explode ethereal versions of Shadowlords for the slim possibility of netting a marginally useless cloak. That's the real world equivalent of hunting down the Spear of Destiny for the sole purpose of using it to open a can of Diet Sprite.

No, here, let me give Inu a well-deserved rest and serve as prognosticator for the likely coming fiction in bullet-point terms. This is all player knowledge, deduced lovingly from a decade of observing this game.

  • As most third-graders with any sense of pattern recognition could tell, Casca is most probably a bad guy.
  • Casca is most likely controlled by, or is a Shadowlord.
  • A large-ish event will hit, likely mid-February/early March, similar in scope to the last one in Moonglow, 'lo these many months ago.
  • It will initially be justified with fiction, but will be reduced to wanton greed-inspired collection questing.
  • Event Moderators, poorly trained and lead by Design and Production rather than Community (split between Warhammer and UO as it is), will enter service. Event quality will vary DRASTICALLY across shards, but no one will know.
  • Stygian Abyss will launch without any in-game explanation. Inu might be tapped to holler something at the bank about "gargoyles, everywhere I look gargoyles."
  • The new Gargoyle "lands" will be as historically and points-of-interest barren as Malas, and just as trailer-park like.
  • Casca, by this point will be relegated to a position similar to that of Minax. Forgotten. I'm sure players will get to fight him and kill him at some point to put _insert EM character here_ on the throne, or he'll fade into plot torpor like a good temporary distraction/word filler should.

Personally, I sincerely hope I'm full of hot air. (Generally I am.) Let's watch and see.

Sherry?!

Bah!

My sister was promised the throne...and it was not given to her. But now, it is MINE to take!

This usurper will find himself at the mercy of the all-powerful Tiamat...and she has none!

For most people, the stories don't have an effect at all. In fact, most people I know don't even read these stories and I have to tell them what's going on as it's happening.

For a lot of people, these stories have a dire effect on what's happening in game. For example, without the stories, I wouldn't have known that I should be attacking the six rather than letting them go on their way. Sure, game mechanics (they were there, they were red, that sort of thing) made it pretty obvious, but until I knew how they were acting, I wasn't sure how my character, which is different than me-as-a-player, should have reacted to some stranger in a dungeon. After all, I see strangers in dungeons all the time and haven't attacked one yet until Myxkion. And even then I didn't attack the first incarnation of him. Instead I defended my guildmates against his onslaught.

Inu's ramblings leave many people scrambling to figure out what they mean. These quest-by-riddle things are just as important to them as PvP is to other people. Blackrock has been important in the past (ethereal shadowlords, blackrock infected creatures) and has been promised to be important in the future. I have a feeling that it will be integral in opening the Abyss.

I'll adress your points by number, rather than quoting each one individually.
1. Yes, Casca might be a bad guy. In fact, he probably is. The thing is my characters either don't know or don't care that he's bad. They'll either follow his lead blindly or fight to serve their own purposes. Besides, who's to say that having an evil leader isn't good for Britannia?
2. Or he could be out for power, assassinated the council on his own accord, and has now won what he wanted to win. History is full of those people. But you're probably right.
3. I won't give a date to a largish event, and there will be several of them prior to the Abyss opening. The power-that-be have stated or hinted that several times.
4. The trick is to use the wanton greed to the best effect of the fiction. For example, they did use pride (and greed) to destroy Magincia. If the better reward came from saving Magincia, then Magincia would have been saved. So far in this arc of events, they've been doing very well in using the player's gaming patterns to the best result in regards to the fiction.
5. True, event quality and quantity will vary a lot. I just hope that my shard has a better EM than others. And that unique/rare items will not be imbalancing.
6. The entire story arc is aimed at opening the Abyss. You could also use the same type of story to open the Lost Lands or Ilshenar (I missed Malas and Tokuno opening, so I'm not sure about the events leading to them). We're all relatively certain about the results of the story, but the fun is in getting there.
7. I think that the current Dev team is working hard to make the Abyss both rich in context as they are making it rich in art. I hope to not be disappointed.
8. Casca will almost certainly enter the NPC MIA list, just like... well, most of them. They'll save him to use as a future bad guy if that's ever needed.

Casca coming will maybe will introduce the Spear of Destiny. Casca was the name of the Roman soldier I think. Like we need another named weapon like Blackthorn's kryss to ruin the market.
