Looking for Europa Lag, Need your help!

Hello everyone,
We received a report last week that some customers were experience packet loss when connected to the Europa Shard. I have our Server team looking into it, but all the hardware checks out.

I'm hoping that if there are any Europa shard players out there today that are experiencing this that they could post their traceroutes? I'll pass those traceroutes on to our server team and have them investigate further.

I have a generally bad connection with many, many hops and i have no clue who to blame for it. Choices of ISP's are limited here too. Somewhere on the way to the OSI-Servers is almost every time packetloss or high latency, mostly on the sprintlink-side of the route.

I get used to this, sadly no pvp or high-end game content for me with this connection. I'm green with envy if I see routes posted from others :wall:

Anyway, I you have some suggestions for improving my connection, please tell me.

Maybe a silly question for some, butteh... how does this traceroute thingy work?

Esp on one comp we have had lag probs recently, and sometimes on both comps UO seems to freeze for like 30 secs or longer...

just run 'tracert europa.owo.com' from the dos console. Should bring you the trace to 159.153.156.138.

If you want the actual conn parameters to the server, connect to the europa server, run 'netstat' from the dos console which will give you all current network connections. The actual europa server is something like 159.153.156.14x. Then run a 'tracert' on that adress.

you've got a problem with your isp

the 100% packet loss between the two bluewin routers on the route indicate a massive problem on your isp's side. If this is persistent, you should complain to them for either they have misconfigured their routers, have hardware problems, or most probably a bandwidth problem. Nothing you should accept as a paying customer. A pity, bc the conn without the packet loss issues doesn't look that bad.

Chiera, 100% loss can just be the server/router not responding to pings (likely as it's certainly getting past it to ping later hops).
My connection almost always shows 100% loss on a couple of hops, it's when it's showing the odd loss that it tends to be a problem

I'll try some trace routes during the day and see if anythign shows up on my connection to Europa.

just had a closer look on the routing table. You are right in that the problem actually starts earlier. Even the first hops (after the network router ofc) without the packet loss vary from 10 to 100+. This is just not acceptable and is a strong indication for a problem with the isp.

Thank you for the trace routes, this is a good start. If some of the hardware that connects to Europa is suffering from issues I'm hoping we have enough info here for the IT guys to review. Keep the info coming, and as soon as I know more I'll post.

Thank you for the hints. I am no techie and so I did not know how to interpret these routes. I'll wrap an email around this traceroutes and contact the isp's customer service. He's got the quasimonopol here though, always a bad thing. But one can always try ;-)

Another traceroute with some bad loss...

Hello everyone, it looks from the trace routes that many of you begin to see the packet loss before the EA servers. I'm not sure exactly what we can do for you guys other than recommend you contact your ISP's and let them know about your trace route and if they are willing to contact the owners of those servers who show the loss.

I will have our network engineer take a look at this thread over the weekend to see if there are any updates or other suggestions he can give me to pass on to you guys.

Well ive kept trying for about two weeks now and uos been unbarable for lag ive just stopped bothering to play other than to stock vendors.

Upon calling my ISP i was told the issue isnt directy their responsibility.
They suggested i should contact The games customer support LOL!

Thanks for all the info guys, I am going to try and find out if we can contact Verizon (Alter.net) and work something out with them. It looks like that POS3 switch is either overtasks, or failing.

Does anyone know of a method I can create a little batch file which will run tracert europa.owo.com and save the output to a text file?

If I have this, I can have the icon on the quick start ready to double click when this happens.

Put this in a batch file:

@Echo Off
tracert europa.owo.com > europa_tracert.txt
start notepad europa_tracert.txt

That will run the tracert, put it into a file called europa_tracert.txt which will be in your C:\Documents and Settings\youruser.name folder (on XP) or C:\Users\youruser.name folder (on Vista or Windows 7) then open that file in notepad.

UO2D was unplayable due to the extreme lag. (I wasn't trying anything complicated - just a bit of shopping.)

I tried logging-in with KR, *shudders*, and the lag just went away.

I know that 2D is a decade-old client, with (presumably) vast amounts of irrelevant coding, but the difference between the performance of the 2D & KR clients is (IMHO) unacceptable.

Are players actually saying that they have packet loss, or are they just reporting that the "game is unplayable due to lag/staggering"?

As simply as you would try to explain it to a 5year old and i might understand. Although i will say the last couple of days ive been absolutly flying conn wise. I play on GL and havent lagged/lost conn in about 3days now(until i switch ISP but the other ones always crap)
