19 picks and 47 failed attempts later, I finally managed to pick a single level 6 chest with GM Lockpicking. This is nothing short of being stupid to the point of aggravation. How about taking a look at the success/fail rate and making an adjustment so that the highest level lockpicking actually does something more than just aggravate the hell out of you?

Thieves already have almost no place in UO other than as rares hunters or PS stealers, don't you think they could use a little bit of love in one of the few skills that's still actually useful?

When you think about it.....why should you fail at all? Its not like you are going to stop picking the chest or lockpicks are a rare resource! At 100 you should never fail.

What's this? You actually complaining about something in the game? I am marking my calendar now. Yes it is a little silly for a level 6 chest. But T-hunting as a whole needs a makeover. I would like to see some ML ingredients, mounts, crimson, and set items added in. Just think if they added Dyes, or rubble.

All of that new stuff with a little twist. If you do not remove trap, the explosion from telekenisis will destroy the newly added items. It always bugged me that one little low level spell bypassed an entire skill.

I don't see a problem with the success rate of picking L6 chests. That particular run sounds like the occasional RNG trouble, and I'm sure a little frustrating, but not outside the range of feasability. Considering both L5&6 chests can't be picked until GM, L6 should be very hard to open.

"L6 should be very hard to open"

Why? As has already been mentioned, it's not like you're going to stop trying. All it does is add an aggravation factor to doing it. A small chance to fail or break a pick sure, but it shouldn't be so high that it's possible to get 47 failures in a row.

This is like saying "I have GM mining, I should always smelt valorite or I have GM swords, I should always hit Ogre Lords."

The time factor is part of the game, how long it takes to do something.

Connor, grow some backhair, come on...

Stock up on a big pile in your t-hunter's bank. I can tell you now that this won't be the last time that happens. Stocked up on 12k lockpicks in the bank of my t-hunter last year, am currently down to 7400...

Tinkerers have families to feed too, y'know... *nods*

IMO 6 should be hard, but not that hard. they need to redo the difficulty line for all chests.

level 4 chests you'll basically never fail over 95 skill. And then level 5 and 6 are both ******** (and require GM ontop of that).

They should all be in line with difficulty. Would make training the skill without having to be discorded so much better too.

The chance to smelt Valorite is higher than the chance to pick a level 6 chest....

It wasn't even a T-Chest that would make the time worth it. It was a paragon chest. No comparison between the 2.

Like I said, I can understand a small chance to fail or break a pick, but a % chance that allows for 47 failures in a row is nothing but aggravating, especially for 1100 gold and a few gems.

Chest Spawn in general needs attention. How many chest are there in Ilshenar?
I stopped counting at over 200+. How many have anything spawn in them?
Zero, zip, nada. They are decoration only.

You want to spread stuff out over the entire game, and all area's of the game. Spawn is the way to do it, and spawn in treasure chest is as good of place to start as any.

Your character is probably hungry. When I have issues opening 5 or 6's I eat, and it usually pops fairly quick.

Yes I know the devs have stated that hunger doesn't affect things, but I swear that ore smelting and lockpicking are affected.

C

That could be and I'll give that a try next time, but hungry or not, the fail rate is ridiculous.

Hey Connor, I see I was really replying to the first reply to your post. The person who said "why fail at all?"

A good idea would be to turn in all of these stealables that pile up for some magic lockpicks. Turn in a few rock gardens or teapots or pillows from a shipwreck for buffed lockpicks.

Especially if we want more stuff to spawn inside, they would need to be more difficult.

THAT IS A GREAT IDEA.

Turn in. Magic lock pick. Opens any chest once or so. Anyone can use it. Or something.

Interesting idea.

The lockpick RNG works just like everything else does. I"ve popped many Lev 6s on the first pick. What needs to be changed is the ability to use Telekenisis on chests.

"The lockpick RNG works just like everything else does."

That's plainly obvious. What's not obvious is why such a high level of fail rate is associated with picking a simple paragon chest. Treasure chest, sure I can see that, there's an artifact in it, but a paragon chest is 1k in gold, a few gems, and the rest is good for nothing more than recycling. Hardly worth the same level of difficulty as a treasure chest.

Sorry I hate the idea, there not enough room in current templates on product shards to have remove trap. If something like this was done it would kill another area of fun for many folks, like me. Example; Before the super dragons, my wife and I hunted every day in Destard, we farmed our gold, gems, and leather. Since the birth of the Supers, we have not been to Destard except to res someone trying to tame a super. Today we are now doing maps, all levels, except for Level 6s because of the supe up anicent wyrms, those we been leaving for guild events when we have more folks around. So this idea if it was made would really kill our fun.

Now if you want chest loot to be better, then by all means I am for that as most loot from todays chests sucks and is tossed in the bodies of the dead around us, taking only the regaents, gems, gold and what few good items there are if any, mostly jewerly that we sell cheap to guild mates or friends on our vendor here.

Its funny, but the other day, we did a L5 and two L6s and I had more trouble opening the L5 then I did the L6s. The next day was doing a L6 and hit a wall with picking it, was funny to see all my "last object" key stokes when I did finally opened it.

At the very least, the system response "you quickly succeed" at opening the chest ought to be removed. It makes me even more upset after I've failed for a very looong time. lol

That too, but I wasn't T-Hunting. It was ONLY a paragon chest. If it was a level 6 T-Chest, I could understand a bit more difficulty since it has 6k gold, an artifact, regs, a bunch of gems, a bunch of scrolls, and enough items that at least one would be halfway decent, but we're talking about 10-1200 gold, 4-6 gems and a pile of junk that took way too long to get into for what it was.
