Lobster Traps come in 2 facings : what for ?

The Lobster Traps sold by the crab fishers come in 2 different facings, along the East/West axis and along the North/South axis and, they do not stack with each other.

Why is that if I may ask ? What for ?

I don't like this FEATURE either. It does not change axis until you actually claim your full trap. It seems funny to me and the lava traps come in 2 directions too.
