Linguistic question UO related......

My mother tongue is not english so, at times, I can misuse words and their meaning.

I have therefore a linguistic question which is related to Ultima Online, the game we play.

In Ultima Online, we have a virtual currency, gold coins and bill notes/cheques up to the value of 1 million.........

This virtual currency (gold coins and bill notes of gold coins, cheques....) is used to value in game items and do trades, moreless like we do in real life with real currencies.

My linguistic question refers to the word "cash"............

When talking about Ultima Online and mentioning the word "cash" to me the mind goes to gold coins or bill notes of gold coins (craftable with the limit of 1 million per bill or cheque....) which, as I see it, is our in game virtual currency, our "in-game cash"........

Am I correct, or does the word "cash" only and always have to necessarily refer to real life cash ??

But then, why can't in a virtual world be a virtual "cash" ??

Thanks.

Normally one would refer to the in-game currency as gold. I've never heard anybody use the term cash when referencing in-game gold, but I suppose it's a valid usage as you've pointed out.

It really depends on the context of the conversation, but I'd say assume it's real life currency unless the consersation makes it obvious in-game currency is the intended meaning.

In the real world cash means actual currency, as opposed to cheques (checks), credit card debits, and virtual (being such in power, force, or effect, though not actually or expressly such) currency. In UO, gold coins are cash, virtual cash.

I've always taken "cash" to be a generic term for currency.
Although I don't use the word "cash", personally, in game or out.

"Golds" all the way.

Generally they're not referred to as cash. Gold seems to be the most standard term used.

If you say cash it is REAL life.

UO is just GOLD.

If you say... I will give you cash for that robe.

Players will think you want to buy it with money in real life.

Another way to look at is GOLD is GOLD. You say gold because you get GOLD in game.

If you were to use the word cash in a virtually world... You would really have to say CASH GOLD.

Cash is slang for american currency.

In the US, CASH is used like the word MONEY

Do you have any CASH?
Do you have any MONEY?

This is a hard question to answer due to the "context" under which the conversation is taking place.

1) If the in game conversation is "Hold on a second while I run to the bank and get the cash"...then more than likely they are talking about IN GAME UO GOLD/CHEQUE.

2) If the in game conversation is "I'm going to list the item on Stratics for 300mil cash"...Then they are talking about IN GAME UO GOLD/CHEQUE.

3) If the in game conversation is "I'm going to list the item on Stratics for 300mil, but if someone PM's me with a cash offer, I might take it"...Then they are more than likely referring to REAL LIFE MONEY/CURRENCY as the "CASH OFFER" via PM.

These are three different scenarios that I have seen occur and quite possibly could occur in UO near you.

I seem to understand, therefore, that when talking about UO in-game items' values in terms of "millions" which obviously refers to gold coins as it would be unrealistic to refer to millions as related to real life currency, the usage of the generic term "cash" in such a context could be used and would be clearly addressed to in-game gold coins and never to real life cash, right ?

If you say cash it is REAL life.

UO is just GOLD.

Actually, to my understanding is not gold, but gold coins........

That is, the "coins" in the virtual world make it for the virtual "cash", to my understanding..........

If you say... I will give you cash for that robe.

I would not think so.
I would think, since we are talking within a virtual world using a virtual currency, that we are talking about virtual cash, that is, gold coins as related to, for example, in game cheques.........

Once gold is turned into coins to me it becomes cash. Virtual cash if you will, but still cash.........

Cash is slang for american currency.

In the US, CASH is used like the word MONEY

Thing is, that the game is played all over the world and assuming that what goes for american slang may go for the rest of the world I would imagine it as not correct.....

Raven, thats absurd. Cash != money in US english.

Cash refers to the actual money commodity. A concept unfortunately deprecated in a world where everyone finds fiat currencies acceptable.

If someone said cash in UO, I would interpret it as gold.

What is you mother tongue, popps?

i dont think such a deep question should ever take place on friday.

that being said cash is actual currency, dollars, euros, yen etc...

not checks, debit cards, ccards, pay to the bearer bonds etc.

as in

cash in hand.
cash in pocket
cash on the barrel.

currency in uo is gold coins or checks made up of gold coins. i've never heard the term cash used in game.

Try it.
Go to someone in Luna and say ill give you cash for that robe. In 2 seconds people will be asking you to use Paypal.

Pops you cant use cash as you describe (in game). Though youre right instead of cash you could say in uo... Hey ill give you coins for that robe. They wont be thinking pennies.

Try it out and see what response you get from players.

But guys come on...

People assume gold. No one really says gold (But saying... gold for sale as that site spammer does). No one says coins. No one says cash.

Vendors items are priced as numbers.
When you are selling at a bank you say "buying robe 200k"

Not
"buying robe 200,000 cash"
"buying rove 200,000 coins"
"buying robe 200,000 gold coins"

Just 200k.

Though - Id like to hang out with you guys and talk philosphy. It would be fun.

OK: In the real world, "cash" is usually taken to mean coins/notes, as opposed to cheques/ bankers' drafts/etc.

However; we must consider the difference between UO and RL...

I could buy your RL house from you for one million in pound-coins or dollar-bills, but I cannot buy your UO house from you for one million (in gold pieces), without an awful lot of palaver.

If you say... I will give you cash for that robe.

Strip your character naked.
Remove all surplus rubbish from their backpack.
Load them up with as many coins as they can carry.
Now go shopping for any moderately high-end item.

*points upwards*

No player can carry enough UO gold to make medium-level purchases.
In UO, "money" and "gold coins" are freely interchangeable terms.

I'm not American either, but I have no difficulty in understanding what most multinational players mean when they offer an item for sale.

Now; as you are so fond of posing questions on UHall, I'd like to ask you one...

You have been here a long time, (I've been arguing with you for years)...

Why on earth do you keep asking such inane questions?

Cash to me has always meant physical money, in my hands, that can be used for immediate purchases.

I don't use cash to mean gold in the game, however if I did, it would refer to gold coins only, not checks.

You "cash" a check.

If you're going to immediately disagree, why bother even creating the thread to begin with? You already had your mind made up before you started typing the first word. I am now thoroughly convinced that you sit behind your computer every day thinking up the most asinine questions you can come up with just so you can argue with everyone.

Yet another useless and waste of time thread by the king of uselessness.

Does it really matter?

It ultimately comes down to what the individual thinks based on the situation. Popps, you may link the word "cash" in UO to gold coins. But another may link the word "cash" in UO as to RL money.

Regardless of whatever conclusion is reached here, people will still stick with their own situational definition of "cash."

Therefore this thread only seems to be another rant.

Perhaps because like time and space being relative also fun may be relative?

That is, what some may see as inane discussions others may find them fun and intriguing?

Relatively speaking, of course..............

You "cash" a check.

And when we "cash" a check in game, in our virtual world, don't we perhaps get gold coins from "cashing" it ?

Therefore, gold coins does is the "cash" of the virtual world of Ultima Online that our characters live in........

Sounds perfectly logical to me.
