ok so i know in dnd in order to kill a lich for good u need to destroy its phylactery. In ultima when we kill a lich thats its so this got me thinking what if everytime we kill a lich its just the same dude over and over because we didnt destroy the phylactery. This could explain y they are always so grumpy i mean dieing over and over must suck. The only exception to this i could think of is the lichs that spawn during a t-map it could be argued that the t-chest itself is the phylactery and after u complete the looting it and destroy the chest u are destroying the lich in the process.

Just something i thought about figured i'd share it and see what anyone else thinks.

I remember when I had my first home in UO... the liches would come up from the lich wood and hang out outside my house... and that laugh... sent chills though you...

in 2003 I was doing hag quests on my newbie paladin for mage regs and t-maps.

I got jumped by 2 liches, and fought them off, the second one dropping when I had 0 displayed HP.

However, since it was a running fight, I took one more step before stopping to heal - at which point the invulnerable quest imp spawned, took a swipe at me (which did damage) and killed me, right by the lich corpse.

The guardian room in doom. My first venture into doom, was feeling invincible. It took over 10 years for me to finally go back, easy now, great for maps, but that left me scarred for so many years......

As a lich, I can confirm that the original poster's theory is true. There are, in fact, only a few hundred individual liches in Sosaria. When our physical bodies are destroyed by thoughtless adventurers who lack compassion for our plight and seek only our gold, we must be put back together by our friends or, if we have no friends - and liches rarely do - reassemble ourselves through sheer force of will. You are correct in guessing that this breeds a certain misanthropy.

My family historically made our fortune as repairers of undead flesh, fixing the damage done by misguided knights of virtue. We also specialised in maintenance of the life-deficient body, keeping dead flesh and bone as intact and naturalistic as possible. There were some who referred to us derisively as cosmetic surgeons of the undead; I prefer to think of us as artisan puppeteers. Either way, our handiwork resulted in the liches of Umbra being known as the most beautiful liches in the world. This is a very narrow superlative, but I am proud of it.

I would just like to add that many liches are unimaginative in their choice of phylactery. A phylactery must be small, lest our souls be diluted by being spread out across too large a physical area; this is why phylacteries usually take the form of gemstones or other ornamental tchotchkes, rather than, say, an impenetrable fortress or a rock formation. Sadly, just because a person is a mage of great power does not mean that they are knowledgeable about the properties of gemstones and metal. I have known several liches to lock their soul away in a diamond or a piece of gold, only to find out the hard way that diamonds shatter and gold melts. This is not to mention those that have bound themselves to perishable substances such as timber; and I will not even go into the problems associated with glass phylacteries. It is tragic to lose a lich in this way. Every lich is precious.

Get stitches.

World of Xeen has a lich boss with his phylactery being his heart. He keeps it "safe" in the sewers under the city. The sewer is filled with lava instead of water. There are multiple tiers of liches too. Only this boss having a phylactery. The others are liches but I assume theirs are on their bodies.

One falsehood I often see repeated is that liches become liches in order to harness great destructive force and conquer the worlds of men. This is because only the liches who go on killing sprees generally become well-known. There are many more who surrender their life and death in order to fulfil more mundane goals that cannot be achieved within an ordinary human lifetime; for example, a friend of mine whose mission was to catalogue and collect a specimen of every single earthworm in Sosaria. In fact, the phylactery to which she bound her soul was her rarest dried specimen, the jewel of her collection and the pride of her existence. She also kept chickens. A series of hilarious pratfalls led to the chickens accessing her phylactery, and sadly, she was lost to us.

It must be noted that undeath results in a gradual but inevitable deterioration of a person's emotional control, among other functions. As liches become progressively more difficult to handle, socially, they are limited to the company of other liches; which only exacerbates the problem. This is why we are known for a certain volatility. After hundreds of years, an individual who may have been mild-mannered in life will respond to small provocations, such as having their phylactery shaken by a goblin, with explosive, apocalyptic, city-destroying fury.

I am happy to answer any other questions you may have about liches. Please understand that I rarely get to discuss this topic, as all my friends are dead and my children and grandchildren find the subject confronting.

I have a few lich questions, actually. In normal circumstances a sharp thrust of a pointed weapon would end a person rather quickly if aimed at the heart (if a normal sized human, elf, or gargoyle) or around the neck and head for your shorter species (goblins, orcs, etc.)

But I've noticed the, hm, "lich-ification process" tends to elongate out the lich and perhaps even re-distribute the vital organs. Where would you suggest a paladin or or otherwise skilled swords-person place their weapon within the lich to have the desired effect?

Oh liches were the bane of my newbie existence I was afraid to leave Moonglow island for fear of getting lost so I hunted the graveyard for like 6 weeks. That laugh was always my cue to run like hell or die. Even though they're pretty much crap loot nowadays I'll still swing by lich wood and farm a while. I owe them a lifetime of payback.

Regrettably, digestion is one of several ways to permanently destroy a phylactery. That is why gemstones are so popular, they pass through the digestive tract unharmed. It's also a good way to temporarily hide one's phylactery, if one has a willing accomplice who maintains their biological functions.

Paragon liches spawn west of Volcanic Lair in Ilsh. Fun times. Is it Liches or Lich? Or is it a murder of lich?

Just North of Compassion Grove.

Oh and ALL LICHES MUST DIE! Don't know how many times I've said that... But yes... If they weren't thieving bags of rotting flesh maybe I wouldn't feel that way but they are thieves!

They are dirty little thieves aren't they. Always seemed to have a fondness for looting reg bags. More than once I whacked one and got a free bag of regs back when.

No running... It doesn't matter in a crowd of mobs I don't care what all the others are... 1st target for me is ALWAYS the Lich... Because ALL LICHES MUST DIE!... Always.

Liches have contributed to Sosarian society. It was a lich that discovered the first pixie yews, exposing our kingdom to the attentions of the twinkling menace. And a lich created the first successful biofusion of a horse and a wyvern! It was the first, and the last...

I beseech you to remember that liches are human in all but the fact that our bodies have died and gone on beyond death in horrific skeletonised form that is ghastly to the eye and soul. We deserve sympathy.
