Umm...Is this screencap supposed to be UO? (It isn't, unless it's some weird version I've never seen before.)

Or is that just there for illustrative purposes?

I've never personally heard of this incident until now, but Google did turn up what appeared to be a relevant link.

Griefing has long been a...ummm...hmmm... significant part of this game.

The multi-player interaction/manipulation has long been the cornerstone of its success.

I believe it is another game that they used a screen shot of. Probably one of the Nintendo games that had slimes in them.

Nintendo did have single-player Ultimas (or at least one).

So maybe from one of them?

And Cracked doesn't necessarily know the difference between Ultima and UO?

I don't think its an ultima at all, just a photo that had to do with slimes.

...

Nope, that's not an Ultima title in the image. The NES versions (III, and IV at least) looked more like the NES versions of Dragon Warrior or Final Fantasy. The SNES versions (VI and VII) attempted to look like their PC counterparts.

The image is a 16-bit era game, but I don't recognize which one it would be though.

Crashing the server with slimes is an old story I had forgotten about.

I think that the game pictured is either 'Secret Of Mana' or 'Legend Of Mana', I forget which.

A great read! I love the ironic way the guy writes...

"They set up PLEX, Pilot Licence EXtensions, where you can convert fake game money into 30 days of extra playing time. With a cash value of $15. So now players can work in the game to be allowed to continue to work in the game. It's the closest humanity has come to the Matrix."

I simply had to quote this... still thinking about it now :) (before going back to my BODs ....)

Thanks for this article, I enjoyed it.

My favorite line has to be "Understand: If a computer program ever escapes and kills us it won't be because of the military, it'll be because gamers trained it to."

I can see this happening as a result of an exploit. :D hehe

That one was used on the last list of these that I saw, but that one is pretty out of date now. I though this one was funnier. The other one was also cracked if I remember right. That one also had some good insight on to how we gamers can be. The one line I remember is if gamers had existed when god said let there be light they would have "called it gay and then covered it up with their #$S". I thought that was funny but a bit too true.

Killing Lord British was a tradition and became a major challenge once Garriott figured out we were alllll about dropping his royal hieny in the dirt to dry loot his ass.
THAT was fun.

That older Cracked list was linked to at the end of this one.
