LagTheory: Wondering if Custom Content Is The Cause

Sorry if this has already been said anywhere but its my theory that all the custom content in the game is largely contributing to the lag.

Its not exactly 'scientific' and I haven't been to a great gob of lots lately but so far it does at least somewhat seem that lots that have just the standard game pieces, even lots of them and lots of avatars really do seem to lag a lot less for me.

Others can test this out and notice and see what you find post their thoughts here too

I said the same question a few weeks ago and it seemed too me like they all thought i was nuts.... but will say this again.... for those of you who have played sims1 or sims2 know that the more you add too the game the slower it gets.... and i cannot imagine how many gigs of stuff have been added too this game already.... and you know it has to have some kind of effect to the game as it stands....

My view on the matter, custom content/all objects/avatars (sims) and Lag:
As one mentioned in responds, adding more to the game, I agree, however.. think on this, and in long ago past...
The first "outside" theme lots were not for "pretty", but to help reduce lag.
Every wall, window, door........ objects, then add a full house of avatars (sims) all together contribute to the Lag issues. Huge reduction of lag was found on full lots with outside themes (one floor homes, less walls/windows/doors needed)... much less floor tiles... on and on...
If you play multi avatars(sims), watch the differences. If it is NOT a game itself issue (with codes etc problems), but lot issues (many times usually), you can view how one lot drags frame to frame, while another lot seems to flow just fine (watch with comparable amount of visitors). After seeing the difference, look around the two lots. Usually you'll find on the more laggy lot, ALOT of un-needed objects. Usually much more built up in housing, pools, etc. Yes, also finding alot of custom content objects. I do not believe it's the custom content objects itself, but all objects in combination, and our avatars (sims) do count on that lot.
My suggestion, as owners of business lots, skills/money category mainly (most visited in large numbers)... layout your lot in best greening abilty for your guests, along with needed objects pertaining to your category, theme. Allow your members (roomies) to maybe set out a couple of personal items to express themselves if you desire... but remind them, they do have other sims that one could very well hold a lot (home) of their own to set out their "pretty/amazing/etc" objects, so to lessen, or as preventive lag on your business lot (most are very understanding to this request). I really believe with this positive action, you'll see a huge difference in performance on your lots.

If I enter a lot with a lot of CC, like a store filled with it, It doesn't make the game laggy for me. it just takes sometime for it all to load.

I played TSO for 4 years on dial up. I am now on satlelite, which isn't much faster. It is not an ideal choice for gaming but its all I have. That, or back to dial up. needless to say, I became quite the expert on finding what I could do to reduce lag to the very minimum.

I found that the more "moving or streaming" objects the worst it was.(windmills and jukeboxes or any streaming music) Body lots were the worst as well as the jobs and with all those npc running about. having a lot of pets out was never good.

when I played TSO, it was best to not run anything else on the comp at the same time.

Under options in game. set all the settings to low and uncheck the shadowing ect options. that helped A LOT as did very frequent dumping of cookies and disk clean ups. - hopefully something will help releive you of your lag pain.

I find that running with -nosound helps me at work. We have a shared T1 and we have a few bandwidth hogs out there who love to youtube and listen to Internet Radio. Fortunately I am the admin so when I need some bandwidth I know how to allocate it to myself

All I know is I delete all my CC cache before I play every time because it will take forever to load if I don't and I find I lag less when I do this.

We were told the CC caused it. When you enter a lot all the CC on th lot has to load. All the CC in all the guests inventories have to load as well. Even though we can not see what is in everyones pockets, it still loads. It is on the lot. I think we have a lot of ppl playing with inventories full of CC. If you could give that to a sim that you do not use often to hold for you. Lots would load a lot faster. Full inventories of any kind will make it take longer for you to land.

All above tips are all great, I agree, mainly everyone has their own computer, and how it will handle a given "game" you're playing. It is always wise to take care of your end to help yourself, along with realizing other reasons of the cause. However as I mentioned earlier, a combination of... my point here, it is NOT solely due to one path (custom content). I'm not speaking of "landing/loading", which yes Simone... I can see custom content taking major to other minor combination for that issue. I'm talking overall outright... lag throughout time spent on a lot, comparable to other lots with less.
As someone mentioned above, which I agree with completely and did not mention in my prior responds on this thread... another contributation would be the animations, the scripting.
In "another game", we won't mention names... in a region, nothing on it... smooth sailing... every object (keep in mind, 99% is custom content (player made)/animation/avatar/scripted item all works against that land... more you set on it, less smoothness the ride (fps #'s go haywire!) Honest, the bottom line, EA Land is no different. Sometimes more is just way to much (not just custom content objects), but overall.
This new code has to be debugged as they design, live and learn as we go... no different then the old beta days when I am here to tell you... LAG, frame by frame almost everyday on almost all lots... was all new that needed work, just as EA Land is following same as any other.. new code/new bugs/new solutions/new game.

In my opinion the CC items are contributing to the lag but I beleive the cause is actually the many users we have trying to connect with bad connections. Players using dial-up phone modems and/or DSL lines forces the game and players with faster connections to slow down and lag to keep everything in sync. Plus more and more everyday I am seeing players from foreign countries like Japan, Brazil, Germany, etc. The distance all this information has to travel must take some time to sync - and CC are items that have to be loaded everything.
This is my theory on the whole thing.
