L2 vs. L1

I played Lineage I for a very long time. I'm considering jumping in to L2. I have a few questions:

1) How do the two games compare? Is PVP as much a part of L2 as it was L1?

2) Is L2 still alive in North America? How is the user population trending?

All i can say because i havent played L1 is that L2 has much PVE as PVP.
From old movies L1 lost in graphics and low details so this is a must try game.

There are millions of players in whole world including North America.
If you mean how they trade is through private shops.
