Could we make the Jhelom Pit a secure PvP area?

Hear me out on this....

Many people still equate PvPing with PKs, and thus are unwilling to give Felucca a chance. I admit I was this way for a bit after the shard split. Later I found, when I joined a guild that did antiPK raids, that PvP can actually be fun, exciting and enjoyable. But as it stands, the only real way to do the PvP is to go to Felucca and be subject of course to the PKs.

Let me go off on another rant here. I feel that Ultima Online has LONG dropped the ball on developing character for the cities. I really didn't mourn Moonglow's passing -- why? Because ANY DAMN CITY IN THE GAME IS JUST AS GOOD. There's nothing unique in Ultima Online about any of these cities.

This was NOT the case in the Ultima Series. Bucky's Den had gambling, hedonistic facilities and seedy characters at every turn. Trinsic was rich and offered goods you could get nowhere else. And so on and so forth. But in UO every city is nothing more than the same 10 or so depots of supply. So little is done to make the cities special or unique.

Jhelom is one such city. Located on the fringe of the map, on an island yet, hardly anyone goes there because there's really no reason to. There's the fighting Pit, which looks cool on a tour, but is utterly meaningless in the game itself.

Could we not use this for events? Here's what I propose... and before the avalanche of posts come, I know it aint perfect and there's opportunities to grief, but hey, let's start with it.

First of all, once a week are sanctioned duel nights. On these nights, stealing is turned off for just the city and for the duration of the event.

Using Event Moderators, the combatants are chosen in the week prior and the terms of the combat apply if there are stipulations (ie no magic, no pets, etc). Bets can be placed by the spectators (that's another system altogether of course) based on the odds set by the EMs.

Then the EM starts the fight. He specially targets both combatants, who appear in the pit, frozen for 1 minute. Naturally, nobody else can enter the pit, fire on the combatants or do anything else at all (exploding potions, for instance, when targetting on a live pit, automatically kill the thrower).

The combat continues until one is dead or a preset counter expires. At the end, the combatants are whisked away to special rooms (no looting allowed) and the EM announces the winner.

We could do tournaments, tag teams, Coliseum Battles, progressive monster duels, iron man tournaments, etc.

If nothing else, it does something to make at least ONE city in this game unique.

I don't think EM's should be used for this. I think having the EM's tied up on a weekly basis for controlled PvP content would take away from the bigger picture of their purpose.

However, I do like the idea. Having played through all the phases of UO, PvP has left a very bitter taste in my mouth. To fight another player in a controlled enviroment in a different story though.

With the SA client coming soon, and hopefully bringing better functionality to the game, this should be doable via the client.

Pit duels coule be single, group or mob related. Have an NPC "Pit Boss" activate them. The Pit Boss would have a menu to choose from. Single battle, group batte or mob battle.

For single battle, the player would choose "single battle" from the menu and target the player they wish to duel. The other player would get a gump confirming participation. They would either accept or decline. If the duel is accepted, the players enter the pit from opposite sides and after a 5 second "freeze", the fighting would ensue. Since I do not know the average PvP fight time, I can't state how long a battle should be allowed to last. If there is no winner from death, the total damage dealt per person would determine the winner.

For group battle, the group leader would choose "group battle" and target the others group leader. The rest of the format would be the same for single battle.

Mob battles would need a little thinking or maybe not have them at all. If this idea proves popular, mob battles might take away from the players who want to duel each other.

To prevent rampant killing outside the pit in Fel, they can activate a guard zone a predermined amount of tiles around it. To be successful, people should not be allowed to whack anyone waiting in line to duel.

A ladder system could be set up to track the fights for each shard. Once a month a tournament could be set up. For this I think an EM could be used. The top ten from each shard would fight it out in single elimination for a chance at a trophy with their name on it.

Almost forgot. If a players has a pet, they are flaged as a group and must pick another player with a pet. fair is fair.

Not to knock your idea...

They need to bring back Color Wars!!!

4 different colors... 4 different castles... However it'd have to be revamped since this was before the implementation of items and you had a castle to get regs/weapons etc.

We could set stakes! The two combatants can agree on a theme before the battle starts...

  • STFU -- The loser cannot speak for 24 hours
  • Gold -- For a set amount or a percentage that both can match
  • Drop -- The next artifact drop for the loser will instead go to the victor
  • Luck -- Half the loser's luck (at the time) adds to the victor. The loser is stuck at 0 luck for 2 days.
  • Penalty Box -- Losing character is inactive for 24 hours
  • BFE -- The loser gets teleported somewhere far away (and can't use teleportation technology or the help stuck function) for 30 minutes
  • Polymorph -- Character gets polymorphed to a sprite of the victor's choosing and must play as such for at least 2 hours in game.

Agreed. I've always wondered why you couldn't conduct an official "duel" against someone in the pit.

I don't think there should be a penalty from losing, other than bragging rights from the winner. Have to make this as enticing as possible to gain maximum support.

If you want a penalty, maybe a 2 hour non removable title saying "I dueled "X" and lost".

Did you mean Magincia? ( although that slip only reinforces your point :) )

A lot of your ideas could be implemented by having someone willing to run a guild in Jhelom. Trouble is, the game has too many interesting things to do to get most people to role-play these sorts of leaders :)

Or, how about you can summon any creature in the game (creature to have no drops i.e. gold etc.) to duel. Depending on which creature you summon determines the cost - summon a champ spawn boss and it could cost like 3 mil, whatever...

The creature will only attack the individual (and those in his/her party).

I've always thought it'd be cool to have a dueling NPC.

One that you could pick it's template... like if you were a mage and wanted to get better at playing a mage, or a warrior, hybrid etc...

Then you could duel this NPC, it would have the gear like any other mage/warrior, typical amount of hps/stamina/mana, enough AI that it would know what spells to cast, specials to use... that way people who aren't adept at PvP would have a chance to learn.

And allow the person to choose the difficulty level of the NPC. If they're a beginner, they can have a beginner's duel etc.

That way people can learn w/out the risk and dissapointment of being ganked in Felucca until they feel competent enough to protect themselves.
