Could we make the Jhelom Pit a secure PvP area?
Hear me out on this....
Many people still equate PvPing with PKs, and thus are unwilling to give Felucca a chance. I admit I was this way for a bit after the shard split. Later I found, when I joined a guild that did antiPK raids, that PvP can actually be fun, exciting and enjoyable. But as it stands, the only real way to do the PvP is to go to Felucca and be subject of course to the PKs.
Let me go off on another rant here. I feel that Ultima Online has LONG dropped the ball on developing character for the cities. I really didn't mourn Moonglow's passing -- why? Because ANY DAMN CITY IN THE GAME IS JUST AS GOOD. There's nothing unique in Ultima Online about any of these cities.
This was NOT the case in the Ultima Series. Bucky's Den had gambling, hedonistic facilities and seedy characters at every turn. Trinsic was rich and offered goods you could get nowhere else. And so on and so forth. But in UO every city is nothing more than the same 10 or so depots of supply. So little is done to make the cities special or unique.
Jhelom is one such city. Located on the fringe of the map, on an island yet, hardly anyone goes there because there's really no reason to. There's the fighting Pit, which looks cool on a tour, but is utterly meaningless in the game itself.
Could we not use this for events? Here's what I propose... and before the avalanche of posts come, I know it aint perfect and there's opportunities to grief, but hey, let's start with it.
First of all, once a week are sanctioned duel nights. On these nights, stealing is turned off for just the city and for the duration of the event.
Using Event Moderators, the combatants are chosen in the week prior and the terms of the combat apply if there are stipulations (ie no magic, no pets, etc). Bets can be placed by the spectators (that's another system altogether of course) based on the odds set by the EMs.
Then the EM starts the fight. He specially targets both combatants, who appear in the pit, frozen for 1 minute. Naturally, nobody else can enter the pit, fire on the combatants or do anything else at all (exploding potions, for instance, when targetting on a live pit, automatically kill the thrower).
The combat continues until one is dead or a preset counter expires. At the end, the combatants are whisked away to special rooms (no looting allowed) and the EM announces the winner.
We could do tournaments, tag teams, Coliseum Battles, progressive monster duels, iron man tournaments, etc.
If nothing else, it does something to make at least ONE city in this game unique.
