I'm pretty sure I saw it in the town hall notes from last year first.

But if by here you meant UHall, then yes, I saw it here first, since here is where I read the town hall notes.

Well, I'm not reponsible for distributing "first leak" laurels, but I think the judges will want evidence of the novelty of your insight ;-)

Have you heard anything more concrete than the mention of balancing pets before SA comes out?

Pub 58 info somewhere?

True. Both are inevitable.
So is all tamers leaving Fel, or worse...cancelling their subscriptions...when it does happen.

Oh well, I guess it really is inevitable...

...eventually EA will **** off every single person that plays UO and close it down.

Why would tamers have any reason to leave Fel? We don't even know what is planned, so isn't it a little early to predict anyone quitting UO?

For all you know the nerf could be the most wishy washy pathetic attempt at cleaning up taming, which fails to balance anything. Seriously, that's what I'm expecting. I would be utterly amazed if taming skill items got the boot or if tamers needed vet to bond or pretty much anything "big" was done to fix the profession. So if I were you, I'd stop worrying. At least until we see the changes proposed....

Who says I am worried?

Of all my characters on 2 accounts, my tamer is the one I PvP with least (well, besides my smith, my tailor, my alchemist, and my pure bard).

Well if you're not worried, why post about how tamers are going to quit over a nerf nobody has seen? That just doesn't make sense... at least not without a joke or sarcasm tag on the end of it :D

Any tamer who quits because he can no longer bola someone and then 2 hit kill them with an "all Kill" should just close their account now and save us all the headache.

Oh, I am not kidding or joking.

After every round of nerfing this game has gone through there have been people that quit, and most certainly people that stopped PvP'ing with that template.

Are you suggesting that if the devs nerf pets that an equal number of tamers will remain in Fel???

Once jewel tamers' pets are nerfed, they will just drop the template and go back to being 'incredibly overpowered something else' that will come along after tamers are nerfed.

It has been that way since the very beginning, and will be so until the very end.

I remember reading the same sentiments around the time the first nerfed Bards.

Tell me, how many active subscribers do we have in UO today? How many do you think is the magic number before they pull the plug on the shards.

Rather than whine and encourage people to quit, players should do what they can to encourage others to stick around as long as possible...unless of course they just don't care if EA closes UO down.

Tamers are like the Generals during wartime.

They command their troops from the safety of the Base (Guard Zone), but don't actually do any killing themselves. :lick:

We don't even know what will be changed, so we can't even call it a proper nerf yet, let alone guess who'll do what. Did players quit in droves when rune beetles were nerfed? No.

Besides, if a few gimplate and twink tamers move to another template who cares? If they quit for WoW or whatever, I'm still not worried. Give 'em a week to get bored, then they'll be back to UO training up the latest gimplate for hiding at Yew gate. Chances are they won't even close their accounts for fear of losing that pixelcrack stash, so we'll just get peace for a few weeks. EA won't lose cash, and we can all get a laugh at them fighting over nothing on Uhall. In other words, business as usual. But I'd miss it if we had anything else, as I'd need to find something else to read for giggles when I have a break at work :D

You underestimate the power of MMO addiction. :)

If having one class you play nerfed was sufficient grounds for people to leave en masse, UO should have nobody left. If you've been in any MMO long enough, your class should have been nerfed at least a few times.

Well I have thought that was their goal as it is and has been for the last 3 or 4 years... Think it's working pretty good too.

Actually, I dont care.

I love UO and have played it since day 1...but this constant catering to people who say "if this is changed I will quit" is ********...its like people who come into my bank and pancake about not getting a certain CD rate they want...good riddance......no loyalty.

I have been loyal through every nerf...

Sure, I loved being able to WOD people and kill them instantly....but I knew it needed to be fixed...so I didnt whine when it got fixed...

If you honestly think that Greater Dragons mixed with Bola's are fair right now then you are either:
A. Fooling yourself
B. Selfish

I have always played my char : Limlight
As a mage...when they added Necro, SS and Spellweaving...
I dropped Wrestle, Anatomy and Resist

I dont complain everytime something gets nerfed...I just keep playing....

I have a tamer...I have an archer....

We have 7 character slots...play a different character for awhile if they nerf your tamer...

It will cycle back around and your tamer will become better later.

I'm not getting in on this argument per se but I did want to respond to this one statement.

You are correct it will become better later. Then they will nerf it again once you get used to playing it again because someone else will whine it's overpowered. Then it will become better later. Then they will nerf it again once you get used to playing it again because someone else will whine it's overpowered. And the cycle continues endlessly. I don't mean this just for tamers, it seems to happen to everyone at one time or another. I've played UO continuously from Day 1 also and you either get used to the cycle, or you find another game to play.

Nerfing pets would encourage me to play again. Overpowered pets are one of the two main reasons I don't play now.

This is why it's more rewarding to just play a class and build you enjoy. Instead of merely asking what's most powerful and remaking yourself as that build. I'm sure lots of people could step up and be like "I've been a tamer since beta blah blah blah." That doesn't undo the fact that most of the tamers I've encountered are under a year old in their current build. Or that most of them just rolled it because it was so clearly a supercharged build right now.

Chasing after the strongest class does tend to come back to bite you later. Ask anyone who's played World of Warcraft. Not that getting nerfed stops hundreds of thousands of players from quickly rolling and spending all their time levelling up the latest overpowered class before it gets nerfed.

People who actually enjoy being a tamer, will complain, but will shut up and keep playing after a GD/DM nerf (or similar balance move.) All the people who ONLY played a tamer to be OP will go back to being something else, they won't quit.

Or even worse in UO where we spend 5 minutes soulstoning skills around to become the latest overpowered template.

For that very reason, soul stones are one of the worst features to have been added to UO.

But without soulstones, character evolution becomes even more challenging for non-powergamers. The game is constantly evolving ... sometimes you take a character down the wrong path, sometimes a nerf pulls the carpet out from under you. I don't think I really count as a casual gamer, but it takes me several years to finish a character. Soulstones mean that I don't need to get into golem bashing or jamming a macro key - I know that as long as I'm making progress, I'm not going to be losing anything, so I can afford to take my time getting characters into an endgame.

That's not that I'm unsympathetic. Soulstones changed the game forever - once they were introduced the die was cast and they had to be made available to everyone. A part of me thinks it would have been better if skills were trainable through GGS-only over 100 (so 200 days minimum of play between GM and legendary) and soulstones only worked up to 100 skill.

But overall, even though I prefer to rarely use them, instead keeping a wide stable of characters, I'd rather have soulstones than not have them.

Meh. The real tamers* will adapt and overcome, the rest will whine, gripe, pitch hissy-fits, weep, wail & gnash their pearly whites... Just as always.

* the term "tamer" is interchangeable with any other profession in UO.
