Item Identification

Not sure where else to put this, but its part of imbuing.

I tried to start pre-gaining item id the other day and no matter what I tried to id, I couldn't get a gain, any ideas on if this has been turned off till imbuing is released or am I doing something wrong?

I have 560 skill points on my crafter, item id is unlocked and set to go up. I was id'ing weapons and armor I have stored away with no success.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

the items you were looking at fall under ARMS LORE, not Item ID.

Try a wand, or a piece of pre-AOS jewelry with charges.

You can buy the skill up to the low 30s from an NPC Merchant Guildmaster. I have been using the same sewing kit to gain all the way past 85.

I believe that if you use Item id on npc purchased potions give great gains.. or find a alchemist and id his pots as he makes em ;)
another method is cut a bandaids up as needed and id them.no more then 10 at a time when you stop making gains grab another stack of 10 ;).
This is old school so I dont know if the gains still work or not!!!
But for sure worth a try .

Most of the information these people have given you is wrong. You can item id the same items that you arms lore and gain. I started working item id 2 days ago in preparation for SA and have been IDing weapons and armor in my house and have gone from 0 to about 96.

Shorty, then explain how he wasn't gaining on the same type of items you were gaining on. Then, he started gaining following our advice.

I've noticed a really odd tendency with the lore skills, concerning gaining.

I could never get even a GGS(!) trying to arms lore stuff, but could get them in droves crafting, when others insist that loring an item was the only way to go (in fact, you get 3x more skill checks crafting per hour, than arms loring items).

How old is your account? Is there a chance that Accounts created AoS or later might be bugged to where arms lore and item ID don't gain as readily through active use (or use on items that display their properties already) as those who were subscribed to the expansions where the skills were an active part of the game style (legacy code from an old installation CD, etc.)?

Frankly, I can't explain it either, in either direction. All I know is I have an incredibly harder time using the pre-AoS ID/lore skills to any effect on AoS or later items, on an account that someone created using an AoS code to loot for its shroud, before giving me the stripped account, despite those skills having new uses.

Not sure if it matters but the character I am using was created in December 1999. I've soulstoned off cooking and inscription to start gaining skills needed for imbuing.

Hmm, I just hit the same weapon over and over, never switched and gmed it without really any kind of gain walls.

Whereas with Arms Lore, when its current function was added, I ran a macro to arms lore the same item over and over 100 times, hitting the key to start it when it ran out, and got zero gains, not even a GGS, at 50 skill, in approximately 5000 attempts.

I'm not even gonna bother with item ID, unless they state it actually gives a bonus, as opposed to just letting us know which ingredients we'll get. I can calculate the latter easily enough by looking at the item, for 90% of things.

Are you sure? I distinctly remember gaining from 33.3 to 100 Arms Lore using the same newbie dagger in no time flat.

Deadly sure. ZERO gains, on a character with less than 500 skill points. And I've heard others have the same problem before. Some characters just CAN'T gain Arms lore that way - no logical reason for it. A few of them can get a GGS through loring an item, but no further gains, while others (like myself) couldn't even get that.

I later got the character in question to GM Arms lore, doing nothing but filling smith & tailor BODs. In fact, I trained 5 characters to GM arms lore, doing nothing but BOD filling (and got them to 100+ smithing, and 80-100 tailor in the process), and another to GM Lore in no time, doing nothing but crafting bows for the "A simple bow" quest in Heartwood. If anything, it was a lot more productive in time usage, even if the need to procure more resources made it take a few days in total training time (typically, characters each only got 30-90 minutes a day, and the total time spent on them was around 30-40 hours each).

I don't remeber when, but when they got rid of 8x8 skill gains, they also got rid of the anti macro code that limited gains on a single item. Where as before you could only gain so many times off of one item.
Now it is possible to GM item ID, Arms lore, Anatomy, Eval and such using just one target.
I've GMed four item IDers using a piece of loot off an orc that was scaring the feathers off my parrots >.<

Some people feel the need to switch targets but it is not neccessary anymore. As for skill gains for Item ID, you can get gains off armor as well. Technically you are supposed to be able to GM off of any one item, but as it seems, some people have trouble and others don't.

I say if you find and item you gained off, continue to ID it and it will take you to GM. Gains will slow down so you may think it's not gonna work, but it did for me. Some of my friends GMed in a day, for me it took me about 4 days, but thats not macroing 24/7, just when I'd be watching a movie, vacumming the house, etc.

So...how are the gains? What did you do or are you doing?

*oh yea, as someone mentioned above, it's always good to buy up the skill, it will save you some time and a lot of clicking or (clicks)* ^.^

Basara, if you're collecting the data trying to figure it out, I figured I'd add my recent info--I just finished getting the last 1.7 points of arms lore on my crafter by spamming arms lore on a hatchet. The account is over 11 years old, but the character can't be more than two years old. Dunno if you're thinking it's account age, or character age, but there's what I managed to do.

(Related note--only took two hours to go from 98.3 to 100, too. Not really nonstop, either--I had a macro to run it about 25 or so times, but it frequently ran out and sat idle for a few minutes before I got it going again.)

1. I can't explain why he is not gaining. I have only gmed item id twice; once pre soulstonesand now just recently. Both times they were done in my house on a multitude of items.
2. See above, I never crafted to gain
3. My account shows to be 147 months and my crafter was the second char I ever created
4. I'm stumped as to why he can't gain. Maybe his char is bugged, I once had a char who just wouldn't gain in tactics. It had to be stoned on him.
