If you are casting it against the shadow lords then yes, that is how it works. If you are just casting it then you will get infected. You have to be a mage normally, but at moonglow you didn't have to be so I will assume the same applies now.

To just cast it for fun it must be on the ground next to you and you need at least GM magery or necromancy. But I highly suggest if you want to cast it for fun and don't have more than GM magery or necromancy, get some jewelry or items to boost it up to 110 or 120. Because just at GM it will be kind of hard to get it casted well.
