Is plant crossing broken?

I am just starting to cross plants. I successfully pollinated a plain water plant with pollen from a plain tribarrel cactus - trying to get seeds for a plain prickly cactus. The result? Plain poppies seeds. :( (This was per the charts on Stratics, which stated I should have gotten a prickly cactus from this pairing.)

I looked again at the Stratics webpage on plant crossing, thinking that perhaps I needed to pollinate the tribarrel cactus from the water plant - but it does not say anything about the 'direction' of the pollination. When I looked up what it takes to get poppies, it does not list either the tribarrel cactus or the water plant as a parent.

I have heard from a couple of others that plant crossing is broken and, they say, has been for a year.

Help?

Cactus plants are broken as far as crossbreeding goes. Whatever you cross with the tri-barrel, barrel, or prickly will randomly give you one of the 18 original plant types or a flowering cactus.

If you receive a flowering cactus, you can cross it with other plants to create plain/colored versions of some of the new peculiar plants, which you can read about in this thread.

I've tried to cross over 1000 plants with no luck, as posted.. seems like more than a year it's been broken.. maybe my luck is just bad!

So no matter what you cross, you will get a "random" plant? This dashes the plans I had of obtaining seeds for all of the plants in all colors! :(

And I play on Siege - so it's not like I can shout out to thousands of other players on the shard to obtain seeds. (There are others on the shard who collect seeds, but do they have *every* seed type and color? That I dunno.)

*rethinking what to do now*

I read the stuff about the "quirk" colors, but if *all* of the plant crossing is broken, what good does it do? Is it *just* the tribarrel cactus that is producing random colors/seeds? Or, as Yalp mentioned, has this messed up ALL of the plant crossing?

Thanks anyway. I'm uber bummed and wish I had started this project when it was not broken, but I was playing on another shard then.

If it is not all broken - if only parts of it are broken, then I will build a new chart. But I will have to grow the same plants multiple times to be certain I am not just 'randomly' obtaining the same results. Yuk!

It's still possible to get the Tier 3, but you will be better advised to buy spare seeds. The odds are 1 in 18 each time you roll with a cross breed with any of the random plants, as it can be any of the seeds including the Cactii etc you are after... but you'll need to beat those odds 15 times for each plant & colour type. (1 Plain and the 7 Colours in dull and bright)
I got close, but finished the set with seed trading; don't be afraid to offer every single seed you have to someone in exchange for just one you may need, and grow a tonne of the special poppies to get the poppy dust and identify any you find lying about or want to cut short... I personally let them all continue until all 8 seeds/resources are given, as Seeds of Renewal sell for a fortune, especially on Siege I should imagine!

As mentioned above the ones which generate a random seed, but of the correct colour (ie a red crossed with a red will produce a bright red, random seed) are the cactii; the Barrel, Tribarrel and Prickly Pear. However the rest will cross correctly too, that is mixed parents will produce the different type as the chart shows. Get the seeds as listed at Oddities (the incorrectly spawning flowering Cactus) and they will always follow the growing guide... and are here to stay too.

Well, "buying" spare seeds on Siege is a very iffy thing. Occasionally you will see some seeds on vendors, but not often. Siegers who read this will certainly understand! And if I can get this project off the ground, I vow that Camriel shall stock plant seeds on his vendors!

Like you, I let my plants go until the end before I harvest the seeds or other resources and yes, you are correct - Seeds of Renewal fetch a tidy sum of gold on Siege.

And that's what prompted me to consider this project in the first place. Since I'm going to grow plants anyway, for Seeds of Renewal, orange petals and the like, wouldn't it be cool to build a seed bank?

I do have access to other seeds within my guild. In fact, I believe that one other built a seed bank, but that was quite a while back and I only have occasional access to those seeds. Quite frankly, the other gardeners on Siege are always willing to share their seeds with others, as I learned before I started this 'personal quest.' (I needed a plain barrel cactus seed, and as soon as I posted a request on the Siege board, a kind soul dumped several of them in my mailbox.) :)

But I thought that this might be an easy in-game hobby that I could just quietly pursue without having to involve the entire shard! (It does seem as though a lot of the play on Siege involves the "entire shard" - and this is not a bad thing, by any stretch, but I didn't want to have to bother others.)

Thanks to all for the replies. Personally, I would hope that eventually the seed-crossing would be fixed. Maybe just leave one crossing that yields 'random' plants. But I don't know if others would like that or not. Others probably already have their personal 'seed banks' built.

At any rate, this will all be less frustrating knowing that I'm not actually crossing seeds, but "gambling"! lol.

I believe Sak (former Dev) left this bug alone because most of the gardeners enjoyed crossing the peculiar plants. If the bug was fixed, we would not be able to do that any more.

As you grow more plants, you will be overflowing with seeds of all types. It just takes time. Also, self pollinating the cacti will not give you random plants, so you will be able to stockpile those seeds once you finally get them.

It's not so bad, I've obtained all the cactus type and colors... you just need to keep crossing and soon or later you'll get the one that you need ;)

Remember that only the type is random, the color is the right one :)

Thank goodness for that! Well, this all should keep me 'off the streets' for awhile, lol! :D
