Is my Cu Sidhe ready to tackle Sphynx?

Hi...
I've trained my pup up to the following:

Combat Ratings:

Wrestle 100
Tactics 100
Resist 100
Anat 100
Healing 79.8

Resistances:

Physical 63%
Fire 45%
Cold 72%
Poison 31%
Energy 84%

This will be my first time taking him to fight something dangerous, so I (and he) prefer that he doesn't just die right off. I am 120 in Taming, Lore, and Vet (with jewels) - but I've never been to the Sphynx before.

How do you think he will do against Sphynx?

And do you have any hints you could share regarding fighting there?

Thx....

Hey Startle,

Yea your Cu should do fine. I;ve never trained a Cu against the sphynx, but I often use the sphynx to train my fresh tames. Done it with rune beetle/bake/WW/etc.

It takes a good bit of vetting until their wrestling skill is high enough to not get bashed in the face every swing, but your Cu is already past that point.

I think you'll be having marinated sphynx ribs for dinner :)

Cu's are slow killing sphinx, but I've managed them with just a single nightmare (old style), kitsune and just to be sure...I just tested sphinx with my average cu... I needed 1 bandage ;) Cu's are slow killers, but as tanks you need to be pretty careless to kill one.

Remember to set yourself up well - have a macro set to vet your pet, and aside from the usual all kill, have a petname stop/petname follow me one.

Sometimes you'll be able to mount a pet straight away, so if your cu gets in trouble you can hop aboard. Occasionally you'll get a message that your pet is fighting. It's pretty rare with cu sidhe - hiryu do it all the time lol. So it's optional, but the stop command immediately before you mount is basically a safeguard against that. The last thing you want to do with a redlined pet is type "all stop" manually! If you mount and run immediately, spawn shouldn't retarget you.

Another trick...if you really struggle to keep up with vetting and your pet is fighting a caster with strong melee. Tell your pet to stop and follow you. Then you can walk away from the monster with your pet following you within vet range. But the attacking monster (unless it's a para) won't be able to keep up with it and melee. You'll just have spell damage to heal through. This also works well if your pet is swamped with little critters - let it fight them for a while, then on low health you do the vet walk thing till your pet is on full health and let him fight again. Rinse and repeat as necessary.

But that's not going to be necessary with a cu vs sphinx fight, a freshly tamed cu could easily handle one of those with good support :)

@ Trunkz, Syrus and Wenchy

Thanks so much for weighing in on my silly questions....

Sigh's relief.... :) Thx Trunkz

Syrus, you made me chuckle.... :)

Wenchy... I notice from reading lots of threads that you always go the "extra mile" in trying to help us (newbie tamers) with great information and kind tolerance. I really appreciate all the tips above, they always help.

If any of you are scratching your heads as to WHY someone who has managed to have 120 in all 3 taming skills could be asking such basic questions regarding taming, it's because I "inherited" this tamer from a friend that had to quit playing.

Personally I've been playing since '98 but all my rl friends that played have quit a long time ago, so I've pretty much played alone for the past few years. My favorite char is a bard from back when bards had more power, and I spent literally years to get him to 120 real provo skills, working daily and dieing a lot. Even now, I supplement my "new" tamer with bard skills - since I'm so familiar with how to use them.

But when it comes to taming, even tho my tamer is tops in skill points, she's a "newbie" when it comes to using them. Which is why I spend so much time here in the taming forum, and why most of my questions are so "basic". But I've come to realize the true "power" of a tamer with great pets, and how that taming "power" can allow me to continue to enjoy playing UO - with the ability to fight mobs that my bard could never attempt successfully. And I enjoy "learning" again, just like I did so many years ago with my bard.

Sooo... geez I'm long-winded... thanks again for your much appreciated input and advice. If it weren't for Stratics forums, I'd have quit years ago.

Peace... :)
