No, using Smithing and Imbuing to get to 40% SSI is not possible. You can with Carpentry or Bowcrafting and Imbuing though. The trick is to make an item out of plain wood with 30% SSI (either from a runic or imbued on), then enhance it with ash. One of the properties of ash is 10% SSI, which will get added on to the existing SSI of the weapon if you succeed. None of the metals provide SSI bonuses, which is why it does not work with smithing.
Ash also adds Lower Requirements, so it would be best to plan around that too. You can find the material properties here: Material Bonuses.

Ahhh, so that's it... I think it may have been a Bokuto that I heard about, and that would explain it.

Were there any of the weapons from the event a couple of years ago with SSI on them? Those items from the bosses were imbueable, at least up till this week (not tried since the publish - heck not done anything with those items even before then, from lack of resources).
The Invasion weapons could have greater than 30% SSI on them. They are still imbueable, after this recent publish.

When you guys repair your wooden things:
Bows
Bokuto
Heartwood armor
Would it be prudent to equip a carpentry or fletching talisman?
Reason being I went to repair one of my bows with a fletching deed the other day and the !#%(*#!%* thing failed 3 times, and reduced my nice uber bow from 255 to 252 durability.... that was like several weeks of play time PER 1 durability lost just WASTED! The item will probably break 1.5 months earlier than it would have otherwise now.
