i don't think they are working atm. i tried giving mine to my crafter, but was unable to because he doesn't have taming.

They don't mine, they just eat the stuff. As far as I can tell they're not a crafter's pet and not meant for mining with.

Was them being able to be set to either ores or gems in beta a bug then?

I read a thing or two about them pooping out ore along the mountainside.
