Importance of spirit speak?

I'm contemplating having less SS to have more med. I would have either 85 med or 85 SS while the other skill would be GM. The only necro spells I would really use are strangle, pain spike, and wither (and omen but I don't believe that would be effected). Could I get by with having such low SS? Or would my necro spells not be too powerful?

SS effects the strength of almost all the spells you just listed. check out www.uoguide.com for more information on anything UO if you can't find it on stratics.

What I .... found out was that SS can Heal you from either Corpse near you or your own mana pool.

It may be interruptable but I have never experienced that.

You also see Ghost automatically if GM'd?

Interruptible with damage higher than 1 (can heal though disrupted by magic poison)
See all ghosts at GM, speak as ghost, read ghosts. Exorcism requires 100 SS to cast. Animating skeletal dragons takes GM SS, Vamp bat familiar takes GM SS. Lots of stuff.

On the whole, if you are a necro, SS > Med. Many other ways to get mana back like MR equipment, wraithform etc. But no other ways to get damage/duration/effectiveness boost for necro spells.

Also, 85 med has no advantages over 80 med in terms of passive mana regen. However, it does allow you to trigger active meditation a little more easily. If you can't find a +15 med jewel to boost it to 100, you might want to see if there's some other skill that can benefit from that 5 extra points eg 105 weapon skill, 105 necro, 105 magery etc.

I did some light testing between GM SS and 85 SS. Strangle lasts 8 seconds longer at GM, (40 secs versus 32 secs), and pain spike did 1 more damage at GM. Considering how anyone worth anything carries apples, I think I can get away with 85 SS.

Yep, probably can just fine.

I got a fever and the only prescription is more spirit speak.
Wouldn't that mean you're already dead? :p

is there much of a benefit to having 120 ss rather than 100?
Sure, should be the same linear progression of skill power from 80-100 as 100-120, but there aren't any enhanced benefits like the ones you get at 100 SS.

ss determines the damage of your painspike, wither, poison strike, strangle.
it also determines how long spells like evil omen blood oath mind rot and strangle last.
finaly it determines how much manna you get back while in wraith form

Personaly i think either way should be fine but i think that ss > med.

btw the poster that said 85med=80 med for passive reg is wrong on two counts. 1 a while ago they changed it so med would work on the odd numbers too and it factors in to your decreasing returns for mr items

doesnt take into account the change to med but is still painfully acurrate.
